Australian Police Traffic Officer Murdered On Job

Mon Apr 25, 2005 9:21 am

A member of the Victorian Traffic Police has been murdered with his own gun after he pulled over a motorist for a normal traffic stop at 1am in the morning. The murderer then stole the police officers unmarked highway car. The car was found about 30 kms down the road with the killers body beside it, he had turned the gun on himself. The officer Tony Clarke pulled over the man Nissan Skyline on an isolated stretch of the Warburton Highway at Launching Place in Melbourne's outer east. An alterication broke out between the two and with the man wrestling the officers gun off him and shooting him dead with one fatal shot to the stomach, the officer didn't have time after being shot to put out a distress call over the radio as he died shortly after. It it understood the killer had a psychiatric condition. Public outcry over the killing have prompted calls for a ban on sole patrols. The officer left behind a wife and an 11 month old son. He was the first officer to be killed while on duty in Victoria since 1998.

I feel so sorry for fallen cops doing their job...

This is the argument with single crewing - unfortunatley here in England our force has just imposed this too!

Wont be long before we hear the same results im afraid.

One person patrol cars are SOP for most of Canada as far as I know. Some may have 2 person cars but that would be a negotiated contract item in most cases I suspect. Economics always seems to take precedence over Officer safety.

While those who make to financial decisions are home in bed, safe and sound, the men and women who wear the uniform continue to put their lives on the line. While two person cars would not save every Officer who dies in the line of duty, I strongly believe it would have made a difference in this case. Often times the second officer's presence alone serves as a deterrent.

Dealing with persons who suffer from some kind of Mental illness is an issue that we struggle with more and more as society, through it's elected officials and appointed judges, continue to endanger all of us with releasing potentially dangerous mentally ill persons so as to not offend their rights. What about the right of society to be safe from wanton and needless violence.

May the deceased officer rest in peace.
