(Wrong) Things You Believed When You Were A Child

Thu Sep 15, 2005 6:05 pm

Hi All!

When I was a little kid, I thought the movement of the clouds was actually the ROTATION of the earth.

When I was a little kid, I thought the wind power plants MADE the wind.

When I was a little kid, I thought the safety cards on the planes were CARTOONS for the entertainment of the passengers, picturing funny situations of people jumping off the plane! (I looked at them & laughed about them!)

Your turn!

- I thought that everyone who used the seat belt in a plane would survive any crash.
- I thought I was Superman.
- I thought I could move the sun with a bicycle wheel.

And the list goes on...
I guess I was a really stupid kid.

My father had me convinced that President Ronald Reagan was a puppet. I stopped believing that way after I stopped believing in Santa Claus.

1. When I was a kid, we flew quite a bit. Many planes used to have a black radome on the nose regardless of the color scheme of the plane. My dad once told me that this was a big rubber bumper, so that if the plane crashed, it would just "bounce". I believed this for many years.

2. The back of most toothpaste tubes have the following instructions:

"For best results, squeeze tube from the bottom and flatten as you go up"

For most of my early childhood, I couldn't understand how a toothpaste tube could make "you" go "up".

I though Elvis was alive (which he really is), I thought I would grow a watermelon in my stomach if I ate seeds (judging by my belly my dad might have been right), I believed 4 pennies was more than 1 dollar (my brother convinced me of that), I thought when we flew through clouds we might hit people in heaven, then the usual Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, etc.

1. I had all the answers;
2. My parents were stupid;
3. That politicians were noble;
4. That our Constitution called for a limited federal government;
5. That everything would be easier once I got out of school and into the real world;
6. That hard work alone could make you successful (while it plays a big role, being at the right place at the right time matters a lot!)
7. That 30 was a long way off. If I lived to 50 I'd have a full life.
8. That money could solve all problems - in reality real problems are the one you can't solve with money;
9. That making a $100,000 would make me happy;

For me.
I believed god made babies.

I believe if i could take off my hearing aids and place them near the sound i could hear better. for exmaple, whenever my mother took a bath, id take out my hearing aids and I would slide them under the door so i could "hear" her and be closer to her. broke my moms heart everytime she saw it  Sad

I always believed TWA was the way to go. I never flew anything else but TWA, when we flew out of STL. when i started hearing about AA, and AWA, and DL I was all "there are other airlines other then TWA?!?!

getting a bit "sexual" when i found out a guy and a girl had to have sex to make babies, and when i heard a guy had to "let stuff inside her". I thought all you had to do was pee into the girl and they'd become pregnant. so EVERYTIME I had to pee, i stayed away from girls so i wouldn't get them pregnant LMAO

In my early teens, I got 'combines' and 'concubines' mixed up. I read this article in a magazine about how an Asian guy got in trouble from his wife for having a concubine, and couldn't for the life of me understand why she minded him having farm equipment. My dad laughed until he cried when I asked him that one.

When I was about five or so I had this idea that bubble gum and blowing bubbles was something mystical and a bit naughty. Seeing someone blow a bubble was kinda like seeing someone taking off their clothes. I have no idea how I got that impression.

In grade 1 I walked to school with the boy next door. We had these plants that grew in the ditches and verges alongside the road on the way to school - I think they were horsetails:

The boy next door told me they were called 'unicorns' and that if you walked along the road at night they would reach up out of the ground and pull you down and kill you.

To this day I still hate those things.  Smile
But that was when I ruled the world

I thought British Columbia was in South America.

I thought kissing caused pregnancy.. because I'd see all those tv shows where people started making out, then next thing you know she's having a baby.

I thought pilots looked for holes in the clouds to fly through. I remember spending a few hours at Schipol one day, judging the quality of the holes in the broken layer above.. and when a good one would show up, I'd hope it'd stay so our pilots could fly through it.
Ask why..

Here is a crazy one. I somehow got the idea that people were buried in those things in the middle of streets where signs are. Usually they are raised and paved with bricks. (you know what I mean?)

I used to believe eating milk and meat together made you ill. I kept seeing it on TV and wondered why the people wouldn't get sick. Later I found out my parents were trying to implant the idea of "Kosher" laws. We are not kosher though.

From my first memory of being on an airplane, I remember looking out the window, seeing white puffy clouds, and being convinced they were made of mashed potatoes.

I also used to think that the higher up you got on a mountain it would get really warm cause you'd be closer to the sun. Then I went one time with my family and saw snow and was confused for years.
