Good morning everyone,
Turned on my PC this morning and connected to my favourite morning radio show, and suddenly realised I could hear a noise like a slow drum being hit every ten seconds or so. I thought it was the radio, so turned it off, noise continued, then disconnected from internet, but continued. Can't see anything that could be causing it, but it's really getting on my nerves... any ideas?

Be very careful, stand up VERY slowly. Make your way outside being careful not to make ANY sudden movements. Walk down your street to the nearest payphone and pray that no one goes near your PC whilst you are away. Dial 911 and ask for the bomb squad, tell them that Al Qaida have been messing with your PC whilst you have been asleep and that your computer is going to explode.
Or maybe you could just take it down to a computer repair shop. They'll tell you that your fan is either catching on something or the bearings have disintegrated and you need a new fan.
I prefer the first story but its more likely to be the second.

Turn off all your plugs, open the RIGHT hand side of the computer and see if any cables are hitting the CPU fan. You may of cooked something and need to replace a certain part.

Me too... just what I was thinking (paranoid or not???).
Anyway, the sound was coming from the speakers, nothing mechanical, a perfect sound. Dong... Dong... Dong... Dong...
Anyway, it's stopped. Don't know how. It might have been an add or sometrhing. I think it stopped once I closed the "Real Player" window.

I agree. Probably a heavy set of cables has been set loose and the fan blade has enough energy to push the cables away, but they return. Changing the orientation ot the box would either jam the fan or correct the issue, but you'll not be able to know beforehand.

It probably sounds more like a ping-pong ball slowly bouncing.
Back up every bit of information that you want to keep right now. Your hard drive is disintegrating itself on the inside. Mine went like that for about 2 weeks and then completely shit itself.
It will start having a hard time booting then it will tell you about bad sectors.
Get rid of it now.

Since it was apparently RealPlayer which made the sound through the speakers, there's no reason to panic.
But making backups regularly is still a good idea!

Sounds like a fouled fan or a hard drive getting ready to give up the ghost.
Do a fan check, if all fans are clear and running smooth, back up your data, buy a new drive, and send your current one off to the crusher.

Something obstructing your CPU fan or the bearings have worn.
