Mondays Stupid Thread:Filler Cap On Left Or Right

Tue Oct 04, 2005 1:32 am

Why only one day a week for stupid threads?  bouncy

I was wondering if there was a pattern.. European manufacturers putting them on one side etc etc.

So, state L or R and the make / model.

I can't sleep wondering about this.  sarcastic   Wink

Mine is a VW and is on the right.

Most American cars have them on the right side. Japanese designed cars tend to have them on the left side of the car, as they are a RHD country like the UK. By having the fuel filler location at the opposite side of where a driver sits, makes it easier for the driver to open their door and so not into the pump island and into the stuff there. Of course, until the mid-1970's and with mandated safety improvements including fuel systems designs, many cars had them at the rear of the car, just below the trunk (boot) lid by the bumper, as part of the bumper, sometimes under the tail light or under the license place and with small trucks, behind the driver in the cab.

Both of my full-size Fords ('76 LTD & '97 Crown Vic.) have the fuel door (for filler cap) on the left-hand (driver's) side.

Side note: Many GM full-size RWD coupes & sedans (through '96) had the fuel cap concealed behind the rear license plate bracket.

Quoting LTBEWR (Reply 5):

Actually, it wasn't until American cars started downsizing in the late '70s/early '80s that the fuel doors were relocated to the right-hand side. Usually (although not always) this relocation occurred when a particular model switched from RWD to FWD.

BTW, most american pick-up trucks & SUVs I believe have the fuel door on the left-hand (driver's) side.

My Volvo S60 is a righty, as is my wife's Chevy Equinox. I used to drive a '67 Chevy Caprice that had the gas cap hidden behind the rear license plate. Any time someone asked me if they could drive it, I would let them only if they could find the gas cap! I was the only one to ever drive that car...

The location of the fuel filler is partly related to the routing of the exhaust system vs. the location of the fuel tank.

My Sport Trac's is on the left in front of the wheelwell.

My Benz has it on the right side. The general rule of thumb is that American and Asian cars have it on the left, European cars on the right. There are a vast amount of exceptions to the rule, but that is the best way to generalize it.

Malibu Maxx is based on a GM Europe platform, hence, left side.

The Pontiac Firely is definitley not a GM car. It is a rebadged Suzuki Swift, designed and enginnered by Suzuki, built in a GM-Suzuki joint venture (NUMMI).

My 88 Caprice had the filler cap in the rear, under the license plate.. I really liked that arrangement because I could pull into any pump I wanted in any direction I wanted.

My girlfriend's 00 Mitsu Galant has the filler on the right, which I hate becuase it just seems counter-intuitive to not have the fuel filler on the drivers side.. about half the time i screw up and pull into the wrong side of the pump.

My 90 Accord has it on the left..

I am pretty sure the rear filler thing went away for safety reasons. However, would it be that big of a deal to put a filler on both sides of the car? I would pay extra for this feature.

For the 3rd time, the rear filler cap went away when GM killed off its RWD full-sizes after 1996. Plus, I also believe that GM's '73-'88 RWD A & G bodied (mid-sizes) coupes & sedans also had the rear filler cap.

In all fairness, GM probably didn't extend this to their other models for safety reasons and/or due to the trunk arrangement of their smaller models.

Side note: many of the GM cars that had the rear filler cap did not have very deep trunks IIRC.

The Caprice had a cavernous trunk.. You could get like 4 bodies in there. Any lack of depth was actually a good thing, when loading something heavy the bottom wasn't so far down you had to put your body in position that could lead to injury.

Seriously though, that thing could haul more than a lot of pickup trucks, the trunk was still deeper than a lot of cars I have seen in more recent years.

I do recall reading something about rear filler necks breaking off in rear collisions resulting in fuel spill and fire.

I've owned 2 large Chevys in my time ('74 Impala & '89 Caprice), while both trunks had plenty of room in terms of length & width; the depth was somewhat shallow for cars that size. Compare it to any full-size Ford or Mercury trunk made from 1969 to the present; any you'll know what I'm talking about. A deeper trunk allows more large boxes or suitcases to stand upright and, hence, allow more items to be placed inside.

In actual, the tradeoff for Ford's deep-well trunk is its smaller fuel tank capacity. While GM's fuel tanks ranged from 24 to 26 gallons on the '71 to '96 models; Ford's fuel tanks were 22 to 24.5 on the large '69 to '78 models (a 30 gallon option was available in the mid '70s... mostly for the Police Packages) and 18.5 to 20 gallons on the current ('79-present) Panther platform.

Can someone answer this: why did they stop putting the gas cap under the license plate? Is there a law against this? It's one of the reason I miss my parents' old Buick. You could fill it up without having to turn the whole car around or wait for the person on the right side of the pump to finish filling the tank.

That's something we don't have to worry about here in NJ. We can't fill our own gas tank!

Plus if it's on the opposite side, you can't have the little lever to open the gas tank cover from inside!

No, to my knowledge there was no law against it nor do I recall any safety issues with this layout. The reasoning why GM (which was the only manufacturer that offered this feature) dropped it is probably (guess on my part) due to the downsizing of cars that took place in the '70s & '80s. The tighter exterior dimensions may not have allowed for this type of arrangement.

Prior to the first wave of downsizing that took place in 1977, nearly every vehicle (except station wagon models and the subcompact Vega platform, not sure about the '82 and earlier Corvettes) had the filler cap behind the rear license plate. By 1983 when every platform was either downsized and/or converted to FWD, only the full-size B & C bodies and the mid-size A (later renamed G) bodies had this feature.
