Your Favorite Cricket Players

Sun Nov 06, 2005 8:10 am

After coming to Canada, I have never watched any live Cricket match. But still it is my favorite game to watch.
Hope this thread updates my cricketer knowledge.

My favorite batsmen (difficult to rank since they are not always in form).
Sachin, Rahul dravid, Robin Singh (India)
Richie Richardson (W.I.), Aravinda de Silva (SL)

Bowlers:
Shoaib Akhtar(Pak),Chaminda Vaas(SL), Allan Donald(S.A.)

Fielders:
Ajay Jadeja (Ind),Jonty Rhodes(S.A.)

Best Captain:

Of course "The Prince of Calcutta"

Best Commentators: Geoff Boycott and Navjot Sidhu.

Worst Players:
Javed Miandad, Andrew Flintoff

Cricket fans, your views please!

Andrew Flintoff one of the worst? Whatever you say man, I thought this was our favourite batsmen not who's crap? But you had to add it in... right!?

As for me, I don't honestly know. I've always been impressed by Shane Warne, the man's a living legend. I'm quite a big fan of Chris Gayle, Rahul Dravid and obviously Freddie! All of England's Ashes heroes are high on my list though!

Sorry, it is only a personal view. I have watched him being not exactly polite with players of the opposite team that I support. You may be right, he's actually a good all rounder.

I always loved watching Wasim Akram, he's just about the only bowler to appear in any favourites list of mine (as a batsman, I tend to the view that all bowlers are the lowest of the low  Wink )

David Gower was my favourite batsman. Not because he was the best, but because he was the most elegant, watchable player who's ever wandered out with a bat.

Interesting to suggest that Flintoff is somehow unsporting and unfriendly. Common concensus is just the opposite, as anyone who remembers him putting his arm around Brett Lee in sympathy after England won by two runs at Edgbaston would testify.

I have met him once when he came of the BDA flight, he left his jumper and a couple of other bits and so I brought it through to him in the baggage hall, he also gave me an autograph which was very nice.  cheerful

Who strangely enough didn't get a wicket in the second innings against the West Indies at the Gabba today. (Same for McGrath as per Ninensm - "In 94 Tests together in the past 12 years and in 157 completed Test innings featuring the duo, it's the first time both players failed to take a scalp.") Lee got 5, Bracken got 4, and Watson the other one before going off with an injury.

Must mention by the way that Brett Lee hit a six in the Aussie's first innings that all (especially Ian Healy who should know having seen just about everyone at the Gabba since the 70s including Sir Viv Richards) said it was the biggest they have ever seen at the Gabba. Honestly looked like he was hitting a tee shot with a 1 Wood.

The Cricket Show - which showed during Lunch - had an interview with Pietersen. Interesting mixture of English decorum and South African arrogance. What will be interesting is when this guy hits a form hole (not that it is on the horizon at the moment but happens to the best of them) - how long and deep will it be?

Talking about Brett Lee, there was something about him and Shoaib as to Who bowls the fastest. So, who is the fastest bowler as of now?

He hit quite a few massive sixes in the Ashes series against the Engerlish as well.

Yeah but that was against the rather pedestrian Engerlish attack and not the fearsome Windies.

Shoaib is fastest to the bar, by all accounts.  Wink

There's very little between them. Shoaib is the only one of them who may have bowled a 100 mph ball (there's an error margin in the reading) with Lee just under.

During the Ashes Lee got up to 94/95 mph reasonably frequently, and Flintoff sent one down at 96mph during that series too, though generally neither he nor Harmison are consistently as fast. If Shane Bond of New Zealand can keep from snapping in half for more than a week, then he might get up there too.

But what is fairly obvious is that speed is not enough. Mohammed Sami is very nearly as quick as Shoaib, and has (thus far) an awful Test record. Shoaib hasn't progressed from just being quick, and neither has Lee. The best fast bowler in the world is a 36 year old 80 mph trundler in the shape of Glenn McGrath.

Warne is amazing, a great bowler and more than handy with the bat on occasions. Shame they ever let him loose after the game though.

Forgot to mention that in this interview he talked about his season over here with Sydney Uni. They won that year for the first time in ages (and said he fell in love with Sydney and tries to get back there as often as possible). Great - that eliminates the chance that he won't be any good in "Australian" conditions next time the Ashes come around over here because he hasn't experienced them before.

Bugger! I thought you might fall for that one hook line and sinker and lay it on thick and fast but obviously it was too obvious. (Thinks to self - "Must try different bait next time!").

Was he at Sydney or University of NSW? Just wondered because I played against the latter a couple of times - before KP played of course.

Indeed, though I did notice Chris Gayle smacking Glenn McGrath for a couple of sixes the other day. Something he didn't manage against England, though of course at that time he was facing an attack that offered rather more than the underarm lobs we have come to associate with the Australian team.

Now you're being really silly. It's a well known fact that Holly was susceptible to the short delivery, and had difficulty coping with leg-spin.  Wink
