When some day I become emperor of Rome, then I will create a new time system.

The day will have 10 hours, not 24.
The hour will have 10 minutes.
The minute will have 10 seconds.
The second will have 10 terties.
The terti will have 10 quatroes.
The quatro will have 10 quints (one quint will be 0.864 of today's second).

Who will vote for me as emperor of Rome?

No way. You're clearly a mentalist  Smile

Quoting AsstChiefMark (Reply 40):
Not all Americans write their dates as month/day/year. The military uses day/month/year. Many veterans continue to use it long after they're out of the military. Some public safety departments do so, as well

Indeed - the US military use the 24hr clock too. They recognise the importance of not being ambiguous. I have also noticed that not just the visa forms but quite a lot of "official" paperwork in the US requires the dd/mm/yy format. Seems they are just as stuck on date formats as they are imperial/metric (not that I can talk - the UK is about as messed up as you can get in terms of being half imperial and half metric)

Final point - commas instead of decimal points in continental Europe - that's just wrong, innit!

ie in the USA 03/07/06 is the 7th of March 2006 while in the rest of the world it is the 3rd of July 2006.

We write it just as we say it: today is 11/23/05. November 23, 2005.

Why is that even worth discussing?

Because we say today is the 23rd November 2005 OR November 23rd 2005 but use the dd/mm/yy format. It's just a point of interest. if you don't think it is worth discussing then why post?

I agree with JeffSFO. The YYMMDD order makes much more sense than either of the alternatives. I've date-stamped all my pictures in that format in the filename for about a year now.

Unforunately, it's just one more format to disambiguate (Now THERE's a fun word).

In the Navy, and I believe the rest of the military, we write the date in a different format. For example, today is 23NOV2005. However, on my SF86 (the security clearance questionaire), I had to use YYYY/MM/DD. It was a pain.

You could always try the Julian numerical calendar that we USAF maintainers have to use. Five numbers - first two are the last 2 numbers making up a year, followed by whichever chronological day of the year it happens to be. For example, 31st January of this year would be written as "05031." One could go further and add the 24 hour clock to the date to get a good time stamp - say 6.30 pm on the aforementioned date (050311830). One small problem for long-term dating, however - this calendar resets itself after every century.

Just adding options to ponder  Smile

It is a simple culture difference. It isn't wrong, nor backwards.

And it isn't an American thing. Other countries that use the Month/Day/Year formnt include Canada, the Phillipines, and most of English-speaking Africa and the Caribbean, including Jamaica, Zimbabwe, and Kenya.

In some countries, like Georgia, the year comes first, so today would be 2005 24 November.

How can there be a 76-reply thread on date formats without anyone mentioning the one true date format, ISO 8601.

It's completely unnecessary to argue about whether DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY is more logical, when the fact is that both are ambiguous due to the existence of the other. Anyone who posts dates on the internet in either one contributes to the whole mess.

YYYY-MM-DD is the only way to go.

Even without the ambiguity, it would still be better due to the sorting issue. DD/MM/YYYY is somewhat tolerable, but MM/DD/YYYY is downright braindead.

Edit: Oh, and pointing out that you say "March 3rd" instead of "the 3rd of March" isn't a good defence of MM/DD. Some languages say two--and--fifty instead of fifty--two for 52, but it would be insane to start writing "152" as "125".

So who really runs around saying today is the 25th of November every time you ask what day its. Normally you would just say it is November 25th. In class on the board if they wrote 25th of November you would be confused as to why the teacher is trying to be all fancy and wrong. Big grin:D

well, the point is that most of Africa, Asia and even America (the continent I mean) use the European "ways" which therefore simply is THE way of the WORLD, while the US-American one "simply" is the US-american one .

Here's a list of a map of RHD/LHD.

In general, the overwhelming majority of countries are LHD. The major exceptions are Japan, the UK, and former British colonies (South Africa, India, the Bahamas, etc.), with a few other sprinkled in between.

(the map doesn't highlight any Caribbean countries, though the former/current British colonies are RHD)

I never use the term 9/11, ever.
It's not the way I was taught to express dates.
Damned if I'm going to let any journalistic shorthand change that.
(And if you want to check, you'll find over 4 years I've never used '9/11' either on here, unless perhaps quoting occasionally).

Gee, can't we just agree that we do things differently instead of bashing each other over it? I mean, whenever a date might be difficult to understand, you can use Mar 11, 2005 or 11 Mar 2005... is it really worth starting a fight?

In my opinion using numerals at all, ever is as big a no-brainer as our having the day composed of two twelve-hour periods. How the hell did that ever get started? Hey! Is midnight 12 AM or 12 PM?

Midnight and Noon are both neither in the AM or PM. 12:00AM and 12:00PM are both technically incorrect, since the AM and PM both refer to times AFTER the middle of the 12 hour periods (which would be noon or midnight). There was an interesting article somewhere about this just a little while ago...

Whether it is 27/11 or 11/27, it is 5pm Sunday here in Western Australia, (8pm in Sydney) and only 5am (or earlier) Sunday in the USA. Will you guys never catch up? I mean, even Britain is only about 7 hours behind me.  duck

the whole thing in fact is an "Inter-English" matter, as the "British" way of having DD/MT/YR is the one of all or at least most other languages. Should the Brits change to the US-way, it for me will be the "English-language-way" I simply will accept. If asked (IF!?) then I however would suggest that the US-way gets dropped, and that means by THEM .

I live in the States, but I still use Day-Month-Year, I have gotten in lots of trouble at school for it.........I also use Commonwealth spelling.......

I think the logic is that most Americans will say "March 31st" rather than "the 31st of March" and they prefer to write as said.

Well, just to add a little fuel to the fire, remember that the USA was formed by those who wanted to get AWAY from the ways of the "rest of the world" and start and do some things THEIR way. Get over it.  Smile regards...jack

12:00am refers to the minute immediately following midnight, whilst 12:00pm refers to the minute immediately following midday. Midnight and midday do not have a length of time associated with them - they are just points in time. Saying that 12:00am and 12:00pm are incorrect on this basis is wrong, sorry.
