I am currently a student at La Salle University and am putting my application together to transfer to Embry Riddle (Daytona Beach).

I have a 1260 SAT, and about a 2.8 here and a 3.2 overall in high school. The website told me a 2.5 was "competitive" but the woman at admissions told me over the phone that the average entering student had a 3.3. I can write a wicked essay and can get some incredibly good recommendation letters.

I have completed general education courses here and I am not going to come back next semester (but instead move back home and work until August '06). I therefore only have 15 college credits.

What are my chances of getting in?

The running line with ERAU given it's massive attrition rates was that it was never that tough to GET into, jut STAY into.

Don't waste your time. I spent 2 years there. The staff doesn't care about you and neither does the administration. You're just throwing money at them for nothing in return.

Are there any other schools like embry riddle outiside of Florida?

There is the Prescott campus, Univ. North Dakota has a aviation, as does Purdue I think.

Purdue is a great program, the flight program is like a mini college inside of a larger one. You get all the individual attention that you could get at a school like Embry-Riddle, but you also get all the perks of a major university and fall back courses if you decide Aviation isn't what you want to do. If you change your mind at Riddle you pretty much have to transfer.

Let's be honest, North Dakota is probably the crappiest state in the union and Riddle is an overly expensive sausage fest.

Riddle definately has a very good name in the aviation industry, but don't choose a school b/c of a name choose it b/c you like it. Ultimately what will land you a job is your skills as a pilot, your flight time, and the people you know. (i.e. do internships and what not while you are in college)

FIT also has a flight program I believe, but I think they are more of an aero-engineering school. St. Louis University also has a very good program and the best part about that one is that the flight fees are included in your tuition.

Well, I started off going to Riddle in the fall of '03 with a major in aerospace engineering. I was not really impressed with that program and decided to change my major to Engineering Physics.

That in itself was nightmare number 1. Anyone that has gone there knows what the "Riddle Runaround" is. Basically, if you go talk to one person about something they try to pass it on to another for one reason or another. I had to talk to at least 15 people to get my major transferred, no joke.

After being in the EP program for a year, the staff did not impress me. Half of my teachers you could barely understand, and were unwilling to meet with me most of the time one on one to discuss questions I had about the subject matter, etc. I also tried to appeal one of my grades, that took a whole semester of working my ass off trying to go up the chain of command to get to the right person. Ironically it paid off and I got it changed.

I felt like I was paying 30k+ a year to go to a private school that should've treated me as such. They are not very supportive of the students. I have a few examples below.

Fall 2004, Hurricane season: Basically told to evacuate the campus, no help in finding places to say except they told us we could go to a local shelter. This happened twice, 3 times maybe. Luckily I had friends in the area I could stay with.

Alumni Relations: I worked as a student employee for a semester helping with alumni relations. Basically was employed to call alumni and try to get donations for the school, etc. I found out I was not the only one unhappy with the school, as more than 75% of the alum that I called either hung up on me, told me to go fuck myself, and then started spouting obscenities about how riddle was the biggest waste of 120k anyone could spend. The fact that the alumni are not happy with the school was quite an eye opener for me, and helped me make my decision to transfer.

The social scene at riddle is ok, kind of wierd in a sense that its basically all guys. Sure the clubs on beachside are ok, but there its all guys too. The girls at riddle think they are gods gift to men, and act as such. All the decent girls have boyfriends and the other ones you'd have no interest in.
Once you move off campus like I did its hard to find a party, etc, outside of the random frat party. Then again if you like to drink you have to find a ride, etc (they do have a free saferide service, but only for a ride home) while at a big school campus and the housing are all in a big area and you can just walk around.

Needless to say, I decided to transfer. I'm here at Purdue now, majoring in Aviation Management with a specialty in ATC. Purdue, like riddle, is one of 14 CTI's in the nation. In my opinion, Purdue has everything ERAU has to offer, but more. The aviation programs here are very good, in the top 3 in the nation along with ERAU and UND. We have a great flying atmosphere here, our airport and the surrounding area are very well tailored to student pilots, you dont have to deal with all the airspace that has popped up around Daytona in the last year. All the good uncontrolled fields around DAB are now gone, its all controlled now except Deland to the west, but they do a lot of skydiving ops there so I stayed away.
You also get the college atmosphere around Purdue too. Being around people with different majors will help you keep your sanity and get to meet a very diverse group of individuals.

Anyways, my fingers hurt now, but if you have any more questions about ERAU or Purdue please feel free to ask. One piece of advice I will give you though, is keep your options open. Do a campus tour of both ERAU and other schools you are interested in. I was blind and had a complete mindset on ERAU at the beginning which I now regret. If you ever feel like you want to check out Purdue, let me know and I'd be more than happy to show you around!

Well, there's ERAU in Daytona, which has been discuss thoroughly, ERAU in Prescott, Arizona, which is as boring as hell, UND which has 12 degree tempertures these days, and Purdue in the rather lackluster Indiana.

I go to the Riddle extended campus at night at Randolph AFB in San Antonio. Much smaller classes and they are at night, but the staff REALLY helps you out.

The difference between me and alot of people here is that my debt for the whole year is only 8k...not 40k.

Let me put it to you this way. If I wanted to be an engineer (which I do btw, that's why I'm at Tech), I sure as HELL wouldn't go to ERAU!

And wtf is "Safety Science" anyway?

In looking at universities, ERAU didn't even make the list due to the numerous complaints by either graduates or former students who felt they had wasted their money.

UND, Purdue, WMU & the University of New Brunswick are the ones I'm currently looking at.

Here's some more reasons of mine why I now go to Purdue instead of ERAU:

-Guaranteed 5+ hours of time in the King Air
-Opportunity to get to go to FlightSafety to learn BeechJet systems, and come back to Purdue to fly administrators, etc around in our BeechJet
-We have a 727 and 737 sitting on our school ramp here. We get to play around with them, fire the engines/apu/hydraulics, etc and observe the systems with hands on experience.
-We have real sports here, Big10

According to the Purdue website, entering students must have a student pilot rating. From what I gather, the first two years are working towards the Commercial Rating, and the second two years, the Proffesional Flight program, is when they delve into more involved stuff like hours in the static 727/737 (VERY COOL by the way). Is this correct?

The place seems a lot more competitive than ERAU. The deadline for admission to Fall 2006 was November 15 (damn).

You have to have a student pilot certificate for ERAU too. All it is, is a medical with spots for solo endorsements on the back and such.

And yes the rest is correct. I find myself with a much more qualified group of people with the competitiveness in the program here.

You can also apply for the aviation management program for the first year, get your GenEd's and ground schools out of the way (the first year of management and flight is the same) and then CODO (degree change) into flight your second year. That is somewhat what I am doing, although I already have my PPSEL and insrument rating

Definitly worth a look! I was going to go there (being from W. Mich. myself) until I joined the military. Last I heard they were number 2 behind ERAU. Only like 8 to 900 aviation science enrollments per year on average from what I was told. Plus, WMU has alliances with airlines for internships and the like. I strongly urge you to check them out. Besides, you'd get to live in Western Michigan, near a city called Kalamazoo, that's worth tuition itself! lol

I personally like the program at UND. I go here now, and it is my second year, and the money has been worth it so far. Yes its cold, but oh well. Didnt scare me away. I visited during a -42 F day (yes tahts 42 BELOW), and it was fine. Today is was 4 degrees and im wearing a sweatshirt. But i must say unless you appreciate vastness and frontierness, Grand Forks is one hell of a boring place.

WMU is good, except for the fact that we have lake effect snow so basically, you won't fly from December 1st to March first.

The ten day forecast has snow in it for every day.

They have 2 arrows, which one is always down for maintenace so flights are routinely cancelled.

They have seminoles and senecas that routinely have engine problems and are down for maintenance.

Dispatch never calls to let you know the planes are down.

After your instrument rating, you'll sit on your ass for at least a month waiting for a slot in the arrow or multi's.

You have to wait close to a month for stage checks.

I would take your tuition money to a place with good weather. I wish I did that.

You will have NO PROBLEM getting into ERAU. I have never heard of anyone getting rejected. Basically if you want to pay for this, then you are in.

In response to reply 23. Just what is so bad about safety science. I am a current safety science major and it is a very respectable major. If you have any interest in aviaton safety it is a great major because it will give you a great background in accident investigation as well as aviation safety programs. I'll be honest and say that it definitely isn't as hard as say the engineering degrees but that doesn't make it any less important. Besides, whenever the pilots, engineers, or maintenance people screw up an aircraft, we are the ones who have to figure out what they screwed up, why they did it, and what needs to be done to prevent it from happening again. Next time you complete a trip in any aircraft, you should thank a safety person for all of the work that has been done to enable your safe travel in that aircraft.
