New Zealand...Kiwi And July?

Fri Dec 02, 2005 10:12 am

Why are NWers called Kiwis?

And if traveling between 1 July and 14 July, is the weather there really bad or tolerable. If we went, this would be a first visit.

I assume you mean NZers?

The kiwi is a bird, about the size of a chicken, flightless, nocturnal. Kind of our national symbol, (along with buzzy bees and pineapple lumps)

In July, I would recommend missing the North Island and head straight to the South Island. Cold but beautiful in the winter.

You can find most weather records for NZ main centers at Wunderground.com

For example Christchurch for July this year.

It is rare to get snow at sea level even in the South island. This year actually had two snow storms in Canterbury (South Island's, central east coast) but this is unusual. Most years it is one or none.

If you like skiing there are lots of ski areas in the Southern Alps of the South Island.

If comming in July, keep away from the west coast of the south island, otherwise its not too bad.
