Mon Jan 09, 2006 8:07 am

I've been searching the web for a while and for some reason, I can't find any information on what the current rate is in the UK.

It depends on what type of mortgage, and what company. There is not a set rate, but try going onto the Bank Of England website, or moneysupermarket.com, they are usually a good place to start.

I've got a mortgage with a major UK bank that presently is just shy of £200k, and despite being only 22 I got what I thought was a very reasonable rate of 4.8 %, fixed for 5 years.

In fairness I've got a good credit rating, and a healthy income - but even the 3yr £15k loan I applied for recently ended up costing me 6.9% APR in interest.

It depends a lot on what your personal circumstances are, I've got a friend who is a fair bit older than me, and earns a good 6 or 7k per year on top of what I earn and in regards to his mortgage pays a much higher interest rate than me, and he reckons this is probably because he's a pilot (recently promoted captain with MYT) and this is deemed as an insecure job.
Statistically, people who have had the most birthdays tend to live the longest.

4.8% for 5 years is incredible. Here in NZ, we are paying around 8% for the same term.

The Bank of England Base Rate is what you're looking for. Most mortgages will have either a direct or indirect relationship with it. It's currently held at 4.5%.
