Your Favourite Sad Song

Wed Jan 18, 2006 6:56 am

What's your favourite sad song? For me, it's Wish You Were Here by Mark Wills. The lyrics, when coupled with the music, are deeply moving, particularly if you concurrently think about the death of a loved one. After listening to that track, the world will have no drought for a year. Anyway, here are the lyrics:

They kissed goodbye at the terminal gate
She said, "You're gonna be late if you don't go"
He held her tight, said, "I'll be alright
I'll call you tonight to let you know"
He bought a postcard, on the front it just said Heaven
With a picture of the ocean and the beach
And the simple words he wrote her
Said he loved her and they told her
How he'd hold her if his arms would reach

Wish you were here, wish you could see this place
Wish you were near, I wish I could touch your face
The weather's nice, it's paradise
It's summertime all year and there's some folks we know
They say, "Hello, I miss you so, wish you were here"

She got a call that night but it wasn't from him
It didn't sink in right away, ma'am the plane went down
Our crews have searched the ground
No survivors found she heard him say
But somehow she got a postcard in the mail
That just said Heaven with a picture of the ocean and the beach
And the simple words he wrote her
Said he loves and they told her
How he'd love her if his arms would reach

Wish you were here, wish you could see this place
Wish you were near, I wish I could touch your face
The weather's nice, it's paradise
It's summertime all year and there's some folks we know
They say, "Hello, I miss you so, wish you were here"

The weather's nice, in paradise
It's summertime all year and all the folks we know
They say, "Hello, I miss you so, wish you were here"
Wish you were here

We've been together for so very long
But now things are changing, oh I wonder what's wrong
Seems you don't want me around
The passion is gone and the flame's died down

I guess I lost a little bit of self-esteem
That time that you made it with the whole hockey team
You used to think I was nice
Now you tell all your friends that I'm the Antichrist

Oh, why did you disconnect the brakes in my car?
That kind of thing is hard to ignore
Got a funny feeling you don't love me anymore

I knew that we were having problems when
You put those piranhas in my bathtub again
You're still the light of my life
Oh darling, I'm beggin', won't you put down that knife?

You know, I even think it's kinda cute the way
You poison my coffee just a little each day
I still remember the way that you laughed
When you pushed me down that elevator shaft

Oh, if you don't mind me asking, what's this poisonous cobra
Doing in my underwear drawer?
Sometimes I get to thinking you don't love me any more

You slammed my face down on the barbecue grill
Now my scars are all healing, but my heart never will
You set my house on fire
You pulled out my chest hairs with an old pair of pliers

Oh, you think that I'm ugly and you say that I'm cheap
You shaved off my eyebrows while I was asleep
You drilled a hole in my head
Then you dumped me in a drainage ditch and left me for dead

Oh, you know this really isn't like you at all
You never acted this way before
Honey, something tells me you don't love me any more, oh no no
Got a funny feeling you don't love me anymore
Red tail...Red tail...Red tail...Red tail...Red tail...Red tail...Red tail...Red tail...Damned MSP...Red tail...Red tail

For the longest time I struggled to get over a personal loss in my life; namely my fiancée walking out. I can't tell you how many nights I spent lost in a bottle of wine and listening to sappy music. This song in particular has had particular meaning to me. I'm just glad I've finally been able to turn that corner and move on with my life. I've met the most incredible girl and for the first time in 8-odd months, I'm not hung up over Kelly anymore. And even if things don't work out with Christine, I'll always have her to thank for helping me to find myself again.

If you haven't heard this song, download it. Its AMAZING. The chorus in particular.

***************************

Tonight I Wanna Cry - Keith Urban

Alone in this house again tonight
I got the TV on, the sound turned down and a bottle of wine
There's pictures of you and I on the walls around me
The way that it was and could have been surrounds me
I'll never get over you walkin' away

(Chorus)
I've never been the kind to ever let my feelings show
And I thought that bein' strong meant never losin' your self-control
But I'm just drunk enough to let got of my pain
To hell with my pride, let it fall like rain
From my eyes
Tonight I wanna cry

Would it help if I turned a sad song on
"All By Myself" would sure hit me hard now that you're gone
Or maybe unfold some old yellow lost love letters
It's gonna hurt bad before it gets better
But I'll never get over you by hidin' this way

Death Cab for Cutie- What Sarah Said

And it came to me then that every plan
Is a tiny prayer to father time
As I stared at my shoes in the ICU
That reeked of piss and 409
And I rationed my breaths as I said to myself
That I’ve already taken too much today
As each descending peak on the LCD
Took you a little farther away from me
Away from me

Amongst the vending machines and year-old magazines
In a place where we only say goodbye
It stung like a violent wind that our memories depend
On a faulty camera in our minds
And I knew that you were a truth I would rather lose
Than to have never lain beside at all
And I looked around at all the eyes on the ground
As the TV entertained itself

‘Cause there’s no comfort in the waiting room
Just nervous pacers bracing for bad news
And then the nurse comes ‘round and everyone lift their heads
But I’m thinking of what Sarah said
That love is watching someone die

So who’s gonna watch you die?

Circle - Slipknot
It's not a heavy metal song, and the first line is probably the most significant to me.

Give me the dust of my father
Stand on the face of the ancients
Bare the secret flesh of time itself

Follow me (Follow me)
I've come so far behind again
Follow me (Follow me)
Wish so hard I'm there again
Follow me (Follow me)
Follow me (Follow me)

All that I wanted were things I had before
All that I needed I've never needed more
All of my questions are answers to my sins
All of my endings waiting to begin

I know the way that I faulter
Can't be afraid of my patience
There's a sacred place where Razel keeps safe

Follow me (Follow me)
I've seen so much I'm blind again
Follow me (Follow me)
I feel so bad I'm in love again
Follow me (Follow me)

All that I wanted were things I had before
All that I needed I've never needed more
All of my questions are answers to my sins
All of my endings waiting to begin
Religion is an illusion of childhood... Outgrown under proper education.

Answering Machine by The Replacements would be mine. Paul Westerberg sings over an amplified guitar about his frustration at not being able to speak to his (estranged) lover and continually getting the answer machine. Very heart wrenching song, very sparsely performed with only Paul and his electric guitar.

Oh so many!

At the minute I'm loving 'Because of you' by Kelly Clarkson, and Avril Lavigne has a couple of moving ones, 'Slipped away' and 'I'm with you'.

Of course these aren't classics, and there are some truly epic ones. Al Green's 'How can you mend a broken heart?', Whitney's 'I have nothing' (yes it's from the Bodyguard but its still a good song), and Eva Cassidy's 'Fields of Gold', especially when sung by Nadine Coyle.

Oh I love a good power ballad!

Title - Songwriter/Performer
tearjerking section

Thank You - Ray Boltz
One by one they came far as the eye could see
Each life somehow touched by your generosity
Little things that you had done sacrifices you made
Unnoticed on the earth in heaven now proclaimed
And I know up in heaven you're not supposed to cry
But I am almost sure there were tears in your eyes
As Jesus took your hand and you stood before the Lord
He said "My child, look around you, for great is your reward."

Come to Jesus - Chris Rice
And with your final heartbeat
Kiss the world goodbye
Then go in peace, and laugh on Glory's side
and
Fly to Jesus
Fly to Jesus
Fly to Jesus and live
Up, up and away!

By eric clapton, jack bruce and pete brown

It’s getting near dawn,
When lights close their tired eyes.
I’ll soon be with you my love,
To give you my dawn surprise.
I’ll be with you darling soon,
I’ll be with you when the stars start falling.

I’ve been waiting so long
To be where I’m going
In the sunshine of your love.

I’m with you my love,
The light’s shining through on you.
Yes, I’m with you my love,
It’s the morning and just we two.
I’ll stay with you darling now,
I’ll stay with you till my seas are dried up.

Chorus

Second verse

I’ve been waiting so long
I’ve been waiting so long
I’ve been waiting so long
To be where I’m going
In the sunshine of your love.

I forgot another sad track which helps me recover if I feel sad and lonely. It's Streets of London by Ralph McTell.

DO READ THESE LYRICS.

They background music is simple but effective - like a man on a stool with a guitar.

---

Have you seen the old man
In the closed-down market
Kicking up the paper,
with his worn out shoes?
In his eyes you see no pride
And held loosely at his side
Yesterday's paper telling yesterday's news

Chorus: So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind

Have you seen the old girl
Who walks the streets of London
Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags?
She's no time for talking,
She just keeps right on walking
Carrying her home in two carrier bags.

Chorus

In the all night cafe
At a quarter past eleven,
Same old man is sitting there on his own
Looking at the world
Over the rim of his tea-cup,
Each tea last an hour
Then he wanders home alone

Chorus

Have you seen the old man
Outside the Seaman's Mission
Memory fading with the medal ribbons that he wears
In our winter city,
The rain cries a little pity
For one more forgotten hero
And a world that doesn't care

Chorus
"Everyone writing for the Telegraph knows that the way to grab eyeballs is with Ryanair and/or sex."

Sad, as in pathetic. Pretty catchy, though.  Smile

Really sad song: Hallelujah - Rufus Wainwright

Alot of artists have done versions of this song, but I like Wainwright's version the best.

Growing up for me was great because of all the amazing music. I think this would have to be one of the sad songs that I remember hearing....

Last Kiss
Written by Wayne Cochran in 1962
Best known version done by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers
Hit # 2 on the Top 40 charts in 1964
Remade in 1974 by Wednesday, it only made it to # 18
Remade again in 1999 by Pearl Jam

My saddest song is "All Over The World" by Francoise Hardy

all over the world
people must meet and part
there's someone like me
feeling a pain in their heart

some may meet again
under that same bright star
if maybe some night
you come back from afar
who cares if tonight
I don't know where you are

are you thinking of me now
missing having me around
if you have forgotten me
my world will come tumbling down

all over the world
others are sad tonight
there's someone like me
watching the sun's fading light

all over the sky
there is the same warm glow
here under that star
I'm wanting you to know
wherever you are
that I still love you so

Eva Cassidy's 'Fields of Gold'

Sting wrote Fields of Gold, it first appeared on the "Nothing Like The Sun" album

From: http://www.answers.com/topic/eva-cassidy

In 1998 a compilation of tracks from Cassidy's three released recordings was assembled into the CD Songbird. This CD lingered in obscurity for a few years until being given airplay on BBC Radio Two by presenter Terry Wogan. In 2001 the album reached number one in the UK. Sting, the songwriter for "Fields of Gold", was reportedly moved to tears when he heard Cassidy's version of this song.

Quoting [email protected] (Reply 32):
forgot another sad track which helps me recover if I feel sad and lonely. It's Streets of London by Ralph McTell.

OMG, one of my favorite songs!!

An obscure mid 60's Motown song: A smile is just a frown turned upsdie down! It has a great beat and that great Motown sound.

The Long and Winding Road

The long and winding road
That leads to your door
Will never disappear
I've seen that road before
It always leads me here
Lead me to you door

The wild and windy night
That the rain washed away
Has left a pool of tears
Crying for the day
Why leave me standing here
Let me know the way

Many times I've been alone
And many times I've cried
Any way you'll never know
The many ways I've tried

But still they lead me back
To the long winding road
You left me standing here
A long long time ago
Don't leave me waiting here
Lead me to your door

But still they lead me back
To the long winding road
You left me standing here
A long long time ago
Don't leave me waiting here
Lead me to your door

Now When the Rain Falls

Now when the rain falls
It's heavy and gray
It tumbles and pitches through space
I can remember when rain was soft
When you kissed the rain from my face

Now when the wind blows
I run from its touch
When you were the silk on my skin
People in love walk inside the wind
When nothing can hurt you
It holds you to close
But now im outside looking in

One day all my world circled about you
Now when I move on without you
Nothing on earth is the same

Do you remember the sweep of the rain
The sound of it strumming the sky
People in love walk inside that song
But now when I listen the melody's changed
The rain only whispers good-bye

I dont want to cry when i think of you
But now when the rain falls..
I do.
