RE: Mass MAN Meet - Part Cinco

Fri Feb 17, 2006 7:03 am

Hi All.

I would really like to come on the 2nd.

The problem is, transport.

I thought about getting the National Express Coach up to Manchester Airport, but it takes 5 hours and 50 minutes to get up there, and after 55 minutes at Manchester Airport, I'd have to get back on the coach again for a 5 Hours and 55 minutes journey back down.

I could be on a beach in Lanzarote by then! Big grin

So, if I can sort out some suitable transport out, I should be there.

I know that was a joke (well, I hope it was!), but you are aware that Flybe are flying EXT-MAN now, aren't you?! We had half the cast Coronation Bloody Street here yesterday!!!

Never touch teenypop stuff. Mine's a Bombay Gin and slimline tonic with ice and a slice of lemon or lime (and don't forget to rim the lemon/lime on the top of the glass before pouring).

When I go out with friends, I normally drink Carling (!) and some shorts or shots. I am beginning to prefer better alcohol - and have a particular favourite brand of pint, but it costs about £3.50 each.

On a complete aside, years ago when i was doing EFL teaching I spent a summer working in cambridge at a language school.

The heiress to the Corona beer family had a gigantic crush on me (during my straight days) - but sadly she was a complete moose so i bedded one of the Swedish girls instead.

Shame in a way - think of all that free beer i could have had....

Too right it'd better be cheap. I begrudge paying over the odds for alcohol. I nearly collapsed at the weekend when the robbing bastards wanted £2.90 for a bottle of Smirnoff Ice. Needless to say I went on half pint of lagers after that (£1.65)

Where is everyone staying??

Reading the earlier threads it seems that most people are staying at Bewleys.

I has a quick look at their site and they have function rooms that could hold up to 50 people. Their site quoted a hot/cold buffet at £9.95 per person, which is not bad. However, if you wanted exclusive use of the function room, there might be a hire charge (which I believe is £99), so excluding booze we would be looking at £13 per person. Maybe James could negotiate a discount, if people are interested?

That's a real shame, Lew, as I was looking forward to meeting you. Still health must come first and I sincerely hope you are fit enough well before then and can attend.

Please drop me of the list for now. It looks like I am going to be moving to an appartment of my own this year. So I can use every penny I got if this goes through! I can't wait to leave this place. What started out as a nice student house, has turned into a place with disgruntled old men kicked out by their wives.... jolly!

So I've booked my holidays, starting July 6th. Perfect for the MAN meet.
But as Lufthansa decided that enough cheap seats are sold on "my" flights I'll hav e to wait get a decent priced flight. Anyway, as I'll get a whole shitload of money in may, I'm likely to attend.

*not paying more then 250EUR for that damn flight*

Lew, thanks for staying involved. If you are really unlucky, i might take a trip across and come and visit you Big grin

Changing the subject, I am booked to go on the YYZ meet, and Vapourlock and Spaceman have booked a place to eat. i wonder if it would be possible to do the same. i see people talking about surcharges etc, but surely there must be somewhere?

As my head office is in MAN, well, Didsbury, I'll see if I can find anyone with any clout and wangle airline discount somewhere. If I do it will mean making an official list - meaning dont f**k about with it - and sticking to it.

What say you fellow merry venturers?

If we wish to go with BCAL's idea re. booking the function room for ourselves, I'd be more-than-happy to try to secure a better deal and perhaps some free/discounted drinks, too. I'll do what I do best: be a pain in the arse. But I'd need to know the required times, food, etc., before contacting them.

If you book a function room for an evening, it is normally available from 17:00 until the venue closes. Bearing in mind that some people will want to get some early evening photos and others will be keen to go to the city centre to start the booze tour, I would suggest that buffet is served from 19:00 if others agree.

As regards food, if you ask everyone what they would like, chances are that individual meals will have to be prepared for everyone. Ask the venue what their fork buffet includes. As long as they have a choice of hot and cold dishes, with something suitable for vegetarians etc., that should be fine. Anyone requiring kosher would surely notify the organiser.

This thread has gone relatively inactive, as it has taken nearly 18 hours for someone to reply to James's last posting. I suppose that most people attending will not worry about the meal/bar arrangements until June when it will probably be too late, so perhaps let's start a new thread to jog interest? Part Cinco et une moitié?
