Would Mankind Really Unite If Aliens Invaded?

Thu Feb 16, 2006 12:32 pm

It's become conventional wisdom that if space aliens invaded Earth, we'd all band together to try to fight them.

But how true is that, exactly? I mean, wouldn't there be countries that tried to get in good with the aliens by being collaborators? Wouldn't some of us still hate each other, and try to get the aliens to fight on our side?

Just a question.  Smile

Wouldn't major religions be in an uproar? Wouldn't the proof of extraterrestrial life disprove many fundamental beliefs of major religions? I honestly don't know, but if that is the case, I suspect only mass chaos could result.

I think the better question is... would we ever even have a chance?

I mean, if they have the technology to invade Earth, I'd say we're pretty much screwed. I'd be like the US military showing up to capture some island from a tribe in Indonesia. They wouldn't stand a chance.

Hollywood based question... There wouldn't be anything to fight if aliens really did invade.

Think about it.

What would be the purpose behind an invasion of earth? The logical answer is to take the planet for colonization. Not a very good idea to be dropping super duper alien tech bombs and starting a war that is gauranteed to screw up the planet.

Why not just introduce some super duper engineered alien virus then wait a couple years for all the people to die then just walk onto the newly unpopulated planet?

Stephen Hawking said it best:

"The history of advanced races meeting more primitive people on this planet is not very happy - and they were the same species. I think we should keep our heads low."

We should keep our heads low! The guy's a genius.

I do believe that a realistic, as opposed to a literary or movie, version of events would be immensely complex. Even if there were an overwhelming force of aliens, and unless they actually "cleansed" the planet using viral or energy means, there would be the continual dance of collaborators versus survivalists/resisters.

That's a big "unless", naturally.  Wink

Yes. That was the main point of Robert Silverberg's "The Alien Years". The aliens treat people about the same way people treat ants. If they get annoying, kill them, otherwise ignore them as if they didn't exist.

I think there might be a chance to unite, because desasters like the Tsunami desaster showed that humankind can help each other in a great way when there is a great need for help.

However, it wouldn't last very long. As soon as we have succeeded, the problems will start again (apart from the fact that chances that an alien race which travels thousands of lightyears will be technologically inferior than us is rather, lets say, small...).

But seeing Iranian F-14s flying in formation with US Hornets against flying saucers would be cool.

One way or another, a few religions will "lose out" relative to others. For example, there are religions that say that the manifestations of miracles throughout history were nothing more than alien visitations. These religions would probably fight for the right to say, "We told you so!"

We will run around for an hour and a half with our children screaming till we reach Boston to find that microbes and viruses had killed the Aliens off because they drank our water and breathed our air.

I am banking however on the use of Yodeling music or Yoko Ono songs to help speed things up.

Actually we will just wait for Will Smith to save the planet from aliens. He has already done it three times it would be easy for him.

Reality? Why attack earth?
The only reason is if a Ben Aflack film got broadcast in their direction and they took offense. In that case I will side with the aliens.

But if they attack becasue we have something that they want...like...jelly donuts? We will unite by god. I tell you now brothers and sisters of earth we will die before they get our jelly donuts.

Agreed, but it's my understanding that no Iranian F-14 has been airworthy for at least two decades. That said, I don't think it matters whether or not we'd band together in the event of an alien invasion, we'd never stand a chance.

There is a joke that if an alien landed in N Ireland, the first question asked would be "are you a protestant alien or a catholic alien?"

But, being a bit more serious why would we want to kill the aliens in the first place? Rather symptomatic of all the problems we have on earth.... ah! stranger! kill kill kill.

Didn't Bill Hicks contemplate aliens landing in the deep south? "You ain't from round here boy" to the sound of guns being loaded.

Given that man can't unite over anything, be it terrorism, global warming, starvation, or whatever, why should aliens be any different?

They mean nothing to you, you can't even communicate with them, they are stupid and are in your path, that's all.
same for us and a greater intellengence, if they are able to get here,

But I think there are species much more advanced then our own, somewhere in some form, but all will be unable to survive on our planet!

I think any advanced technocultures in the "near" universe will be just flicks, gone in a matter of centuries, resources exhausted. If there are any more somewhere, it's reasonable to assume that they have been or will be more or less like us, and therefore either long gone, or not expected to transmit anything on the radio waves for a long time to come.

Could very well be true too!

Yet if we consider us intellegent, we do start already to realise to protect our home planet, maybe they did too and did it succesfully and be able to survive.
