£25m Armed Robbery

Thu Feb 23, 2006 7:37 am

Quote:

More than £25m in cash has been stolen from a depot in Kent after its security manager and his family were kidnapped by armed robbers posing as police.

The raid was carried out in the early hours of Wednesday at Securitas, in Vale Road, Tonbridge, by at least six men who tied up 15 staff members.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/kent/4739324.stm

Just heard about this now, despite it happening in the early hours of this morning. ITV news is reporting £40m stolen, BBC £25m.

Still a hell of a robbery!

You would think there would be better ways to prevent such thefts. The kidnapping of key people to gain access by theves does seem to be a new criminal trend (and the theme the new movie 'Firewall'). Still, there should be better ways to limit access or require more sophicated layers of security when so much money is involved in one place.

How exactly can you stop it though? Every bank manager needs to be able to access his safe. If someone put a gun to your loved-ones head and asked you to open it, your going to do it, no matter what the security system is.

Apparently one manager had the keys to the building and had access to all that cash, sounds like a major security lapse to me.

If it was just a case of getting the money I'd actually be inclined to support the robbers - I mean come on if you can get away with £40m from a bank, you've just got to laugh at the bank really. The kidnapping kind of takes that bit away from it though.

How stupid must you be to nick that much money then try to put it in the bank the next day - wouldn't you just keep a low profile and then disappear to Brazil once all the fuss has died down? Sounds like someone got holes in their pockets.

We haven't had one like this for ages.

Brinks-Mat and Security Express were the last two really big blags. There have been a few smaller ones like Barclays Distribution Centre in Salford a few years back, but this is the first really large one for a long time.

The police and politicians hate these spectacular ones as the Great Train Robbery Effect happens, and a large percentage of the population ends up quietly saying to themselves "good luck to you!" It's a fact that the British love a good robbery as long as it isn't someone's home getting burgled.

There were lots of A list robbers in the 60s and 70s but not so much nowadays as drugs is the game of choice for the villain. Less aggravation and it's easier money to clean.

I doubt public sympathy will be with a bunch who subjected both the manager and his wife and child to a terrifying ordeal-as were the other staff.
That is for public school, posho, wanabee Cock-Ker-Ness like Guy Ritchie, (AKA-Mr Pussywipped now into making thinly veiled Kabbala recruiting films).

There are weakest links on both sides-something these arrests might have shown.
The history of them getting away with this is not a good one.

If it was a couple of million they'd probably be home and dry-but 40 stories worth of banknotes?

half of which are going to be traceable as they were in transit to banks.

this is from the bbc.com

"Three people arrested in London over the robbery have been released on police bail pending further inquiries."

do you really think the people behind this would try to "clean" the money on a bank in London 2 days after the heist? then you´r really stupid.

if you plan this type of "high quality" heist, then most likely they have a plan regarding where to go, what to do whit the money and so on.
since the 3 people that where arrested is now released, we can be pretty sure they have very little to do with this heist, because otherwise they would still be in custody.

i doubt the lady that got arrested had anything to do with this. the other 2 that got arrested perhaps quit their job at the Tonbridge depot recently, therefore they look like they could be involved. we don't know, but i don't think any of this 3 people is involved in the heist.

a small amount is probably left behind in the white van. i would guess max 200.000 £

one more thing that is interesting is that no member´s DNA is know to the police.....most likely. you don't do this if your DNA is know.

Also, they probably got their hands on 2 types of notes. so called bank notes that is easy to trace back to Tonbridge and the heist. but they probably also got money that was coming in from supermarkets and all kinds of business.....and those notes is probably impossible to trace because there ID number´s isen´t known.

probably they will try to leave the country and "clean" the money somewhere where the banks don´t check serial numbers and so on. Russia?

but its a pretty dangerous game....beacuse you can never know what kind of communication the bank of England will have with banks around the world.

but they can´t contact every bank around the globe.....
