Former Minnesota Twins player Kirby Puckett has just passed away due to compications from a stroke last night.

I was very sad to hear the news of Kirby's stroke and decline. 44 is just too young, he should have had more time to enjoy life! R.I.P. to a hell of a ball player.

Damn, that's sad. He was a helluva ballplayer. Like Walter Payton, he died way too soon. But I guess Kirby had gotten quite large the last few years. But it's still very sad.

I used to talk to him nearly every night a few years ago. He and Twins manager Tom Kelly were nightly regulars at St. Croix Meadows Greyhound Park where I worked as a medic.
He was one of the nicest big shots I've even met.

How sad is this. I remember idolizing the guy as a kid. He was really a standup guy who worked hard and did things that no one would expect him to do. His career ended WAY too early because of the glacouma and now this. I guess it is just part of the cycle of life, but damn if it isn't one harsh cycle.

very sad fact that he departed us long time baseball fans today... I grew up watching him play baseball. Rest in peace, Kirby Puckett. There's interesting story about his life after baseball.

I actually saw Kirby play in his last game at the Metrodome against the Indians. It was that magical year of '95 for the Indians, and my wife and I went up to MSP to watch a 3-game series. In the final game, Dennis Martinez hit Kirby with a pitch on the s ide of his head. Even Kirby said he knew El Presidente didn't mean to hit him, but as you can guess, Martinez was lustily booed.
Who would have thought that would be his last game, and 11 years later he would be gone. Such a shame.

All my thoughts and prayers are with his family. I still remember when i was just a kid back in 1991, i got to see my first major league game and he was my fav player playin on my fav team. The guy seriously looked larger than life and it was awesome to see him smile and joke around and he seemed like an awesome guy to know. Thanks for the memories Kerby you will be dearly missed!

Recent reports had Kirby at well over 300 pounds on a 5-8 body. Add to this high blood pressure and a family history of the men is his family dying young and it was not good news.

I remember him the most from the World Series, from what I've seen and read over the years he was one of the classiest Gentleman ever to be associated with Major League Baseball.

Terrible news. Kirby was one of the classiest acts in all of baseball. His life ended like his career, way too soon. I remember watching him play, he was great IMO. Sad ending though.

Shit. That came way too soon. I normally love to watch the Twins fans suffer, but I really feel for them now - such a huge loss to the organization, and to baseball in general.

Don't confuse fact with commentary.
But this is a sad day in baseball, there don't seem to be as many good guys in baseball anymore.
You know there was a time when you could reasonably expect to run into a Dodgers player on the NY subway on the way to a game.

I remember seeing Kirby play numerous time in Yankee Stadium.
He was always the kind of player that was easy to root for.
He looked like someone who should be sitting next to you putting
down beers, but instead was out there palying the game the way
it should be played.

Its a shame Puckett kicked the bucket. Good guy but plagued with heath issues.
Yes and the glaucoma was tragic as early intervention, hint: regular eye exams, could have saved his vision.

Only 44 years old. WOW. I saw him play a couple of times at Old Comiskey Park in the 1980's. He was the first $3,000,000 player. I can see why he had a stroke. The man was 5'8" and 300 LB. WOW. God rest his sole!!

Complete bs, intentional or not, that Bonds' steriod issues come out the next day after a class act like Puckett died. Talk about class vs. an ass (Barry). I can't get any serious coverage on any of the sports radio or news thanks to Barry the loser.

I see your point along the Belle and Bond front, and whole heartedly agree. But I get kinda sensitive about Pete Rose. Its taken me a long time to admit that a hero of mine growing up did wrong, but I know he bet on baseball and that's not right. However: let us recognize, as society is these days, that gambling is an addictive illness as powerful to some as any other vice. My hero is ill. As ill as any modern day athlete that's allowed to get away with what they're getting away with. It just irks me that his place in history is tainted now because of something he did after his playing career. Your contemporary NBA thugs get their DUI's, possession charges and everything else drug through the media, but it only seems to make them more popular. (any publicity is good publicity, right?)
My apologies to the thread author and responders for taking an off topic turn. A quality man like Mr. Puckett deserves high praise for all his accomplishments on and off the field.

I'm really sorry he died--it's tragic when people go too soon.
However, let's not act like the guy was a saint. He has a history of alleged abuse of his ex-wife and mistress. Violence against women is intolerable.
