As far as south-east Wales is concerned, Newport is pretty crap (though allegedly now a city), as is Bridgend. The crappest has to be my almost-home, though - Barry.

Maidstone is a dump - the town centre may as well be a car park and it's full of chavs and a fair smattering of furriners! Big grin

Birmingham isn't a town, but still is shit, and as London got a mention, I thought Brum should too. Salisbury didnt impress me much either.

Now, towns..... Driving through Brixham the other day was a bit dodgy..... and I'm about to go to Torquay now.... toodle-oo.

Witney, Oxfordshire. Famous for making blankets, but then they closed the blaket factory. Devoid of anything interesting like a cinema, or bowling alley, or half-decent gym/leisure centre. Full of chavs of teenage slappers who become mothers at 15 and hang around the same bench in the square in the center of the town. No jobs, no joy, nothing to do...

The only things going for it are the fact that it's directly under the flight path for RAF Brize Norton (and there are some great low approaches every now and then), and there are 38 pubs.

Got to agree there. I lived in Carterton for 14 months and Whitney was the backside of the world as far as facilities are concerned. Not as bad as some towns though. And it is in the delightful olde-worlde Cotswolds Big grin (euphamism for rip-off tourist area)

I totally agree! Although i am originally from Stockport, it has progressed into "Chav Central" of the North of England in the past few years.

I currently live in a town called Warrington, located half way in between Manchester and Liverpool. I live over the 'posh' side of town, but over the other side, there is a lot of violence!

Slough

Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, Death!

Come, bombs and blow to smithereens
Those air -conditioned, bright canteens,
Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans,
Tinned minds, tinned breath.

Mess up the mess they call a town-
A house for ninety-seven down
And once a week a half a crown
For twenty years.

And get that man with double chin
Who'll always cheat and always win,
Who washes his repulsive skin
In women's tears:

And smash his desk of polished oak
And smash his hands so used to stroke
And stop his boring dirty joke
And make him yell.

But spare the bald young clerks who add
The profits of the stinking cad;
It's not their fault that they are mad,
They've tasted Hell.

It's not their fault they do not know
The birdsong from the radio,
It's not their fault they often go
To Maidenhead

And talk of sport and makes of cars
In various bogus-Tudor bars
And daren't look up and see the stars
But belch instead.

In labour-saving homes, with care
Their wives frizz out peroxide hair
And dry it in synthetic air
And paint their nails.

Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough
To get it ready for the plough.
The cabbages are coming now;
The earth exhales.

Well it is a bit of relief that nobody has yet mentioned Brighton. It is a shame that the city's fame these days is being the city with the largest gay population in the UK. Even a landmark to the north of the town is reached via Dyke Road and called the Devil's Dyke.  wink

Some parts of Brighton & Hove are charming (The Lanes, the Regency terraces, the South Downs, the street on which I live) but some are awful (tatty seafront, Whitehawk and Hollingbury Council Estates).

However, the awful parts of Brighton & Hove are marginally better than the best parts of that crap coastal town in Lancashire, with two piers and a Pleasure Beach, where our Scottish friends normally go for a weekend's piss up. What was that town called? Blackbath? Crappool? Something like that!

The gay community in Brighton is a significant part of the reason that going out in the city is such a pleasant experience. Brighton has little of the street-fighting culture that so many places do, and part of that must be the relaxed environment created by the open culture there. Seeing a fight in Brighton on a Friday or a Saturday night is pretty rare, and you have to ask yourself what is different about Brighton to other comparable locations.

I'm not saying it never happens. But you must admit that the general atmosphere in Brighton is much more relaxed and friendly than is normal for a city of its size.

Having lived in or near Brighton for all but 12 years of my life, I had always thought that although the atmosphere is relaxed, generally Brightonians are unfriendly and unwelcoming. However, there are times when they can be friendly and events like Pride in Brighton & Hove successfully bring together the communities regardless of their gender, age or orientation. In which other major UK towns or cities can that happen?
