Sad indeed . . . .

Quite a bit of seismic activity in that area in the last year or so . . .

Hopefully a speedy recovery for the injured . . .

It seems as if there is an earthquake somewhere in western Indonesia on a weekly basis.

Well, today there has been 3 earthquakes... the big one at 5.9, and 2 at 4.5 or so...

The airport terminal has partially collapsed, runway reported damaged. Major damage reported all the way up in Solo City.

We've so far only heard from JOG, between JOG and the coast(South), and the JOG-Solo City corridor (North East) about victims, damage etc... Reports from South East are eerily empty... Mountaineous, a bit more isolated (apart from the city of Wonosari).

Local estimates are 3000 - 5000 dead... official count 2500-ish so far...

Experts say that the quake could effect volcanic activity in that area as well...

Sad news, indeed.

This is very sad indeed. Yet again Indonesia has fallen foul of nature.

I can't remember much about geology from school, but volcanic activity and earthquakes usually go hand in hand. It wouldn't surprise if Gunung Merapi became more active soon- possibly a full scale eruption.

I was supposed to be going to UGM in Yogya to study there for a year in September, but the program might have been called off now.

God bless all of the victims and their families.

B747-4U3,
Well, if Merapi has given its big blowout by then, I guess the program won't be called off...

Its still early days to see the real effect of the quake... despite the high number of death toll, everyone's hoping for the region's quick recovery... which all depends on how this crisis is handled over the coming days.

Deaths estimate up to 2,700 now. Plus I saw that volcano on TV earlier, apparently it could blow at any time.

Apart from the obvious human tragedy, I'm not sure that we will be able to cope with the logistical problem. Australia is the only nearby place with the resources to provide the sort of immediate aid that will be required, and the Army and Navy are the only organsiations that can provide it promptly. But we now have around 2,500 soldiers committed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and 1,000 more 'peacekeeping' in the Solomons and Bougainville. As of yesterday we've just sent 1,800 more, plus both our landing ships and a high proportion of our helicopters, to try to snuff out a civil war that just broke out in East Timor.

Talk about 'over-committed'...the whole Australian regular army only amounts to about three brigades (say 12,000 'effectives'), since we haven't been planning on invading anybody. Here's tomorrow's front page in this hemisphere:-
