Mon Jun 26, 2006 6:07 am

This game deserves its own thread...

Do they show 9-9 on your country's public TV?

Nothing - he's refering to the number of players who saw the end of the game on the field!  Silly

For being a double, I'd guess. We do have a daily World Cup thread, so why start a ton of others. However, this game does indeed deserve one.

I was about to start a thread myself on this game.

What an effing joke the officials were! Hope Figo gets banned for the next game after his headbutt and dive! I hope these officials get thrown out the world cup after their abysmal display and are never allowed to officiate another game!

However I dont think that Holland put enough in to win the game. Portugal had a solid defence and seemed good on the attack even with a man down.

Just my opinion

I think that the referee was an absolute idiot. 12 yellow and 4 red cards branished... and for what? Why didn't he send off FIGO for the headbutt? I think that this just proves the collapse of the FIFA rules, and how thye've just gone downhill.. I really wonder how their refs were instructed.. oh yeah, and the huge dive by FIGO to get Holland a red card?

I dont think the referee was that bad. This was the most brutal game of the current tournament. The players didnt leave him too many options than sending a couple of them off the field.

Furthermore, he sent two Portuguese off as well so I wouldnt say he is biased.

Patrick, wtf are you doin' with a Polish flag? They went home!

Ohhhh, right, I forgot...

The two man Polish squad is still playin' under Gold, Red, and Black. Big grin

Poland 2 : Sweden 0  Wink

I don´t blame the ref, I blame the stupid Dutch defender that injured Ronaldo
and later got sent off. Lucky Sven will play against Portugal without Deco, I wonder how badly injured Ronaldo is.

Couldn't agree more!! Fifa is becoming more and more of a joke each year. I mean 3 yellow cards the other day?? for one player?? And how many penalties have there been in this tournament? 1/2? The refs. are a joke!

And Greece winning Euro2004 shows the state of world competitions. Clubs rule the planet because clubs pay the players salaries. If England gets to the final, Gerrard will be 4 days short of 12 solid months of football. Not because of England, but because of the Champions League.

And England is damn lucky, they play so badly and have the easiest path to the semis...first Ecuador and now Portugal minus Costinha, minus Deco and maybe minus Figo (if FIFA acts because of his headnut) and Ronaldo if he can't recover in time.

Look at it this way though...that team didn't take the tournament seriously. And thus got the deserved repeat of the '02 tournament. Serious coaching changes are needed.

That said...Poland lives on as I've pointed out...crushing Sweden yesterday.  Wink

Oh and probably the funniest scene of the world cup so far:

Heitinga ignoring the Gentlemen's agreement that if there's a break because of injury, the time that was in possesion regains possesion. Then he gets teached by Deco (i.e. Deco brutally hacks him down within 2 seconds) and stands Keane-esque above him and shouts and him, just to get slammed down by Sneijder who took a 15m sprint just to do exactly that. Should have been 2 reds, but Ivan the terrible missed this opportunity to add some more spice to the game. Deco took care of that a few minutes later by getting sent off for time-play. Classic stuff.

RTL probably missed the yellow card for Van der Vaart. I was actually surprised he got one, and didn't even see when and for what the ref have him the card. He didn't commit a foul, and he also wasn't cursing at the ref, so that card came out of nowhere.

I wouldn't blame the ref entirely. A lot of those players out there were a disgrace and made it very difficult to control.

Very entertaining nonetheless.

That was one of the ugliest moments in the World Cup... whole games have been repeated in England for what Heitinga did. Sneijder should definitely have seen the red card, Deco is more doubtful, but Heitinga had it coming.

Not to mention the idiot ref stopped the game for the Ricardo Carvalho (brutally fouled by a Dutch player) to be assisted just as a Portuguese player was about to go one-on-one against the goalkeeper.

I think Van Basten should be dismissed. He did not bring Van Nistelrooy only because he had some arguments with him and did not act in favour of the team. Kuijt was really very bad.

The train can only be right, it is our train because we stole it before.

We didn't steel it, fool!!!

It's the German Nazi police that put us on those to get home after we trashed half of the city. ( Kind a revenge from Warsaw, you know, no grudges)

16 yellow cards and 4 red says the ITV highlights...even higher than suggested here
Can you say 'Beer Can' without sounding like a Jamaican saying 'Bacon'?

What did I say???

It's true, whole Warsaw down the ground, let's make it Dortmund.

I mean it's not like they don't have money, they stole whole of our friendly DDR nation.... AND gave them money. Now it's our turn.

Signed,
I don't know who, can't come up with anything funny at that point of my wodka intake.

I blame the stupid Dutch defender that injured Ronaldo

So what about the Portugese defender who gave Robben a same-like kick in his chest in the 16m area of Portugal?

Gimme a break....

I think we played a very good 2nd half and a lesser 1st half (hence the goal)
some cards were well-deserved, others were not, and others (like Figo) deserved more cards.
In the end we had a great amount of chances, our foult that we didn't use them to score. Period.

How long was the stopage time at the end!?!?!!?

6 mins, but it should've been a whole lot more.

Quoting Pyrex (Reply 33):
the only huge dives I saw were from Edwin Van Bommel anytime someone came within 10 metres of him

Hmm... I don't know anyone by that name...

Quoting Pyrex (Reply 33):
Not to mention Deco did absolutely nothing to deserve the second yellow card

I agree with you there. I thought Cocu was getting a yellow card at first...

Ah well, you're biased (logical) and so am I..

What a bloodbath... The most entertaining game to watch so far...

All brutal fouls aside, the game in fact was pretty good, as well... The 1:0 for Portugal was absolute world class. Both teams could play great football, but focusing on kicking each other instead made it more entertaining...
