I don't use q-tips, I use the screw-in end of my cellphone antenna, it works really well. I do it whenever I can't hear very well.

Absolutely never!

I used to be a daily Q-Tip type of guy. Then one day I was chatting it up with some nurses and we were talking about this very topic. After a bit of education from them I decided not to use Q-Tips ever again.

Everytime I shower, so every morning + any subsequent occasions thereafter during the course of a day.

When I'm done, it's the standard dry-off, comb the hair back, and clean out the ears...

ANCflyer does the same, but he actually has to comb the hair in his ears.  old

I have to clean-out my ear canal every other day, at the latest, as I wear an in-the-canal hearing aid that tends to plug-up if I don't.

I use a Q-tip daily. Cleaning out my ears is usually one of the first things I do, after a nice refreshing shower. The feeling of liquid (water from shower) in my ear drives me insane.

If I feel there's an excess of wax, I'll get at it with a rolled up kleenex after I've had my daily shower. The wax is diluted with water at this point, so it goes easily.

I must have been slacking off lately, because last week when I went to the doctor for my annual check-up she recommended an ear cleaning. The nurse wheeled in a fearsome-looking 1940's apparatus. It was basically a vacuum pump hooked up to a water tank with a hose and a long, thin needle-like attachment at the end. That was a nightmare, to say the least. I felt queasy for about an hour afterwards, and my ears are only now starting to feel normal again. Suffice to say I won't be doing that again anytime soon!

Well my mom is an audiologist, so I never use a Q-tip to clean my ear. If you have even a slight buildup of wax, putting a Q-tip in your ear will jam it further down your ear canal rather than getting rid of it. Old wax can make you more prone to ear infections, etc. Your hearing will also start to degrade some. You're also more at risk of poking a nice hole in your eardrum if you go down too far...

Never, but I do direct the shower-head to stream in to my ears every couple of days and wash things out. Believe it or not, ear wax is there for a reason.

Q-Tips can push the wax into the ear. I used to use a Q-Tip daily - it was part of my morning routine - I just had to do it. I went cold turkey when I stopped. I used to have a lot of trouble hearing out of my left ear and since I've stopped, my hearing has imporved over the years.

I now clean my ears each day when in the shower - just use shampoo and wash. I was afraid wax would show in my ears - but it doesn't!

There you have it kids!

Cheers!

I can't figure out how to remove wax. I don't want to go too deep for fear of hitting the eardrum. Usually I let it become a problem (muffled sound) before I go to the doctor to have him do the syringe thing. My hearing is perfect after. Everything sounds so loud and clear. The procedure isn't painful but it's not the most pleasent thing.

Use a dropper filled with warm water and drop a bit of warm water in there. leave it long enough to loosen things and then tilt your head to the side with a tissue underneath. It should all run out quite happily. Repeat with other ear.

Q-Tips should only be used for the outer ear, inside the edge and what-have-you where you may get soap or shampoo left after a shower.

Same reason you have mucus in your nose.... catches dirt/dust/foreign matter and keeps it from getting where it shouldn't

I'd say I do the Q-tip once a month, and a regular tissue maybe once every 10 days or so...

Everyday despite the warnings as a kid. I had an ear infection a couple of years back and the doctor at first thought I had lost my hearing because of wax buildup but after looking in them she remarked at how clean and wax free they were. I'm very careful and know how deep I can go without touching the eardrum.

I don't have bad ear-wax at all, so I'll clean my ears out every few weeks. The sad thing is that I have this Costco-sized thing of Q-tips and over a couple years I've barely made a dent in the thing.

I never use Q-tips. I prefer something more slender that allows a scraping action so I can dig the wax out. That prevents the pushing of wax farther into the ear canal.

Everyday after my morning shower. I don't know where most of you are getting this weird info about it being bad. I have used a Q-tip everyday of my life, and yet have perfect hearing and have not had the need to go to the docs to have him use some apparatus. But most importantly my ears are clean. It's a part of regular hygiene. Why would you want to go around with yellow wax in your ear....

Every day after a shower , I got a nasty case of "swimmers ear" many years ago from a shower. After that I dry my ears with a Q-tip, not going too deep, and no problems since, no wax build up ever. I believe the hot shower helps soften the wax so it is absorbed on the Q-tip rather than being pushed in the ear ?

Eww, never. I hate seeing people do it, too. My mother/grandmother cleaned my ears like that when I was a kid, and it wasn't very pleasant. Plus, the ends of the Q-tips looked gross. I clean my ears with water and my fingers, as far as the fingers will go. No I don't have any problems with my ears. If anything, by pushing things up your ears, you risk injury.

I was told of a guy who had that "ear cleaning" done by a doctor and went deaf! He was actually gullible enough to let the doctor clean the other ear after he had gone deaf in the first ear...had the same result in both ears. Auuugh.

I dip the Q-Tip in peroxide first then stick that in my ear to loosen the wax. Then I use the other end of the Q-Tip to clean out the wax.
