I just bought a MacBook and transferred all my music into the iTunes on this computer. I'm on a mission to get all 1600 songs played (as it was on my old computer) so that I know I've listened to everything and nothing crap exists in the library. the idea is that if someone holds me hostage, chains me to a chair, and presses play on random, I can rest assured that I will enjoy myself. If i did not weed songs out all the time, I would have about 4000 songs by now.
Obsessive? Are songs worth having just to have? How do you folks manage music libraries?

I currently have about 2100 songs, some of which I don't like. When I come across one I don't like, I delete it, and move on. Weeds out the bad ones over time.

I tackle it in waves. I'll get on a kick and spend a couple nights working through my library, re-load my iPod, then not deal with it for a few weeks. Then I'll buy new music or be looking for something I know I have but can't find, and it'll set me off and I'll start in again. Keeps me out of trouble and keeps my music fairly up to date

I have lots of stuff on my iPod that I don't listen to, because I recently added 1,200 new songs... But also, it's just what I'm interested in at the moment, and due to my diverse tastes, eventually, I listen to most of what I've got...

Same thing here.
I dont do "deletion purges" anymore because I then tend to over-delete.

Of course there are exceptions; The Eagles, Guns 'n Roses, Ryan Adams, and The Dixie chicks being some! My most played playlist is EuroTrash however.
Just checked my 'most played' smart playlist, and it turns out Summer Jam 2003 by the Underdog project and Sunclub has been played 207 times.
In my defense, I have had iTunes for a very long time!!
Of course there are exceptions; The Eagles, Guns 'n Roses, Ryan Adams, and The Dixie chicks being some! My most played playlist is EuroTrash however.

Same here. When I get to a song that I no longer care for, it goes in the trash. If I'm ambivalent, it gets stricken from the Ipod playlist, but kept on the computer.

I have about 7500 songs in iTunes / on my iPod, and every one of them has a valid place. I'm totally retarded when it comes to organizing my music, and I know exactly what I've got and where to find it.
Yeah, I'm sad.
I even have my CD collection organized alphabetically by artist and then chronologically by release date. And the CDs must be 'the right way up' in the case.

Go and spend a few hours on www.pandora.com. Pandora.com is a unique website that generates music recommendations by examing a song's genome. A bunch of music scientist-enthusiast types decided that by bracketing an artist's entire repetoir in to a specific genre was too limiting and often inaccurate. Instead they created a 'gene' model for music, composed of several hundred criteria, that define a song. Things like minor key or major key, type of vocals, tempo, instruments used, aggresion, emotion etc. Then they listened to hundreds of thousands of songs, and constructed the gene model for each song.
The result is unbelievably accurate. The idea at Pandora is that you enter the name of an artists or a song that you like, and they will play it for you. Then, based on the genome of song that you specified, they begin to recommend songs and artists with material that fit a similar genome.
I'm utterly addicted to this service, and it's completely free. I have found it to be a fantastic way of discovering new artists that I've never heard of before, with a wide range of international artists and independent performers. It's eerily accurate. Since listening at Pandora, I've discovered several new artists that I really like - The Nadas, Sister Hazel, Simple, Cardinal Trait and Pilate. Go there and check it out.

It totally rules. If I'm not listening to my iPod, I have Pandora on at work all day. If I find an artist I like, I give it the 'thumbs up' rating and if I hear more that I like, I'll buy some stuff on iTunes. It's a great way of finding new music.

I'm the same way. I may not like a song, but when someone else is over and listening to my music, they may like it. When I come across a song I don't particularly want to queue up to play, I just switch it off in iTunes, without trashing it, and that keeps the album together.

That's the way I am when I have the full albums also, such as my Floyd, since with them the whole thing as a whole is more important than individual tracks.

Floyd - an excellent choice!
In my backup music folder I've got 20Gb, comprising of 4828 tracks or videos. I know I've got a lot more than this, and its funny that I should see this thread because I'm just sorting it all out as well!
My idea is that I never delete a single song, but only keep what I'll actually listen to on a regular basis on my PC, and the songs I really like on my mP3, the bulk of my music being held in a folder on my removable hard drive. The reality is that I have a folder full of music in just about every part of my system which seems to have gotten left there after uploading it from friends' walkmans and ripped stuff from my CD collection.

My music player (not an iPod, blech) only has songs by the Rolling Stones and Doors. That way I'm guaranteed to have only stuff that I like.

If everybody refused to pay for music then there would be nobody there to make music
And yes, I do have various downloaders, when I hear that a band that I like has brought out a new album then I will download a track or two, if I like it then I buy the CD. Most of the time I don't even need to download as the bands have the music for you to listen to on their site.
