Cottage Country

Sat Sep 09, 2006 5:02 am

Just got back from closing up the cabin for the summer. In reminising, I think we here in Canada have the best cottage country. Areas like Whiteshell park, Lac du Bois, Muskoka, Kawarthas, BC interior, Quebec. There are other good places around the world like Lake Zurich, hamlets around England, France, Russia. But no place like Canada. Please let me hear your comments or suggestions.

I once spent a summer in a small log cabin on the shore of Lake Winnipeg. It was idealic...fantastic weather, amazing beaches, great fishing, totally quiet and tranquil. we actually went 4 days without seeing another human being. I think it was without doubt the most relaxing break I ever had.

We just bought a place in Prince Edward County, It's just south of Trenton, which is a up and coming area for cottages.

Spent an incredible week up at Stony Lake in the Kawarthas this past August...what an incredible place - we saw mink, bats, so many species of birds & insects (though mosquito season was already over, thank god), and a giant full moon that was breathtaking. The breeze smelled like pine & the air was so clean. My 'workout' each morning was once around Davis Island in the canoe by myself...priceless

I doesn't hurt, either, that I'm a standing guest at Davis Island Manor (built 1911) which measures about 30,000 square feet, and I get my own little cabin, attached to the main house by a boardwalk.

Regardless, you're right - there's nothing like cottage country here in Canada. I'm surprised you're closing up so soon (?!) Don't you go up for fall colours?

Here are a few pics:

We never really "close" up the cottage. There are trips for Thanksgiving, feeding the deer on our lot in November, and ice fishing in March. The place is winterized. If the truth be known, Sep. thru May are the best times to be there. The Thanksgiving weekend is traditional closing time up in Muskoka.

My family has been going to Rideau Ferry, Ontario, for 40 years. It's a wonderful place, and has got great history, too (the historically correct canal locks are still in place along most of the route from Kingston to Ottawa.)
Up, up and away!
