Broadway Musicals From Hell!

Sat Sep 16, 2006 3:05 pm

Over the top, convoluted, surreal, syruppy and you get to pay hundreds of dollars for the privelidge to see one in New York and other big towns. I'm talking about broadway musicals. Overacting with showtunes that make losing my lunch a distinct possibility. If I wanted to punish or get even with someone, I'd tie them in a seat and make them watch multiple performances of the following Broadway Musicals From Hell!  vomit  hissyfit

This sick puppy will think up more of these smarmy broadway productions!

Spelling Bee is wonderful.

Sweet Charity is damn right funny when it's done right.

Starlight Express -- it was wonderful in London and in Bochum but they never quite duplicated it the same way over in New York, U.S. tour, or in Las Vegas. it just wasn't the same because of this. otherwise, it was one hell of a spectacle.

and did you ever see any of these shows on Broadway, or just saw the stripped down non union ruined touring version presented by Troika?

I'm guilty on all counts of seeing none of the above. But their music sticks in my head! And, when commercials use broadway show tunes, I want to toss my cookies. Broadway showtunes have that distinct over the top sound and timbre to them. Almost like long nails scratching across a blackboard!

BTW, I'm glad you enjoyed them. What's one man's meat is another's creamed corn!

Linving in the City, I have to constantly take visitors to B'Way.

Agree with Zippyjet, I detest all musicals since 'My Fair Lady'. The grim slide downwards began with 'Pippin'  yuck . There have been occasional bright spots -'Rent', 'Spamalot' but most is soulless dreck (IMHO).

All I can say is: AL Webber, you're no Rodgers-Hammerstein!

I can't say that I agree with your opinion at all.

There have been some really outstanding musicals since "My Fair Lady".

Rent and Spamalot didn't do much for me (though I tried to enjoy spamalot as my nephew worked on the show http://www.ibdb.com/person.asp?ID=393473 ).

I'm no fan of Webber either save for Evita.

I'm no expert, just another opinionated anetter  Smile

I forgot Patti LuPone in Evita - that was a high point.

You seem to be more of a fan of musicals, so you probably have a more educated taste in that art form.

I guess different strokes, but what would you suggest I go see?

It was for me too. Short story, I was a senior in High School and my dad took us to NYC with him, and my brother was able to get some great seats for the show. He paid a fortune (then), as it was the hot ticket that year.

I've been a fan of Patti ever since.

I think Sunset Boulevard was his greatest ever score.

The best thing about Spamalot is that it makes fun of everything that sucks about musicals.  Smile

True, but their logo/posters aren't up to the hoakiness of your run of the mill convoluted syrupy over the top broadway musicals. Some of the creators of Broadway musicals must have originated in the:

i liked Spamalot just fine, but it certainly is not the best thing to ever hit the stage.

Chicago -- the Musical (not the movie, the stage show)

The Producers

The Drowsy Chaperone

Sadly, Broadway has turned much of its attention towards producing musicals that are based on their big-screen counterparts (ex: Hairspray, Footloose, Wedding Singer, Spamalot, etc.). While this is unfortunate, some of these musicals are at least decent and seem to be what is keeping Broadway alive.

As far as a few shows that just don't do it for me:

Cats- not that the show itself is so bad, but the 20 year old tour just needs to die...

Phantom - will have to say that I just do not generally enjoy the music too much

Light in the Piazza - just not my style of musical
