Ever Been Arrested?

Wed Oct 11, 2006 6:33 am

OK folks, anyone on here ever been arrested (and willing to admit to it!)?

Back in 1983, I got nicked for not paying a train fare and got literally dragged across the concourse at Birmingham New Street station by two massive coppers after trying to blag my way out of it .... hmmmm. Got fined £39 which in those days was a lot of cash.

In 1985 I was arrested and charged with assault in the wayward highlands of northern Scotland but it was a case of mistaken identity Sad .... charges were dropped, thankfully!

Hardly the crimes of the century; anyone else got any stories they'd care to share?

Nope. However, when I interned with the United States Pretrial Services Office I got to interview arrestees to collect any information they might be willing to give for use in their Pretrial Services Report. Even when they refused to answer certain questions, I usually got the answers from other sources-family members, associates, etc. Sometimes things happened so quickly that we didn't have time to complete the report before the initial appearance. One example was when the FBI brought in an arrestee who was charged with attempted robbery of a bank (which happened to be in the same office building as the FBI field office). The arrestee was very combative-ended up sending himself and two FBI agents to the hospital for minor injuries. Once they got out, they had just enough time to rush him to the courthouse for the initial appearance before the end of the court day-we were in the judge's chambers awaiting their arrival the entire time that this was going on.

Very nearly, in DC for nearly buying a scalped ticket to a Caps game. Keep in mind I am an Alaskan and am not well adjusted to life in the big city. The game was sold out for the ticket I wanted. This guy had the $40 tickets I wanted, didnt see the sign that said no scalping...cops came around the corner. Next thing I know Im up against the wall, getting frisked. They check my ID and got my AK license. I am there scared as hell and trying not to show it. They let me go mostly because I am an idiot and the transaction hadnt taken place yet. They took the other guy on a warrant or something Im not sure. Because when they told me to get outta there I listened. I went to the boxoffice and bought the $80 ticket, enjoyed the game(great seats BTW) and was glad I wasnt in a DC jail.

I got nabbed once trying to use a fake ID to get into a bar my first year of University. No charges were laid, but I got the state-sponsered bracelets put on me and tossed into the back of a cruiser for a while. I was 17 at the time, my ID said that I was 22, apparently it was pretty obvious that I wasn't 22. Nothing on the record though, so not a big deal, I suppose I was detained rather than arrested.

I was escorted out of a (not well attended due to weather) college hockey game for yelling at/threatening/questioning the manhood of the referee. Unfortunately with the sparse crowd I was easy to pick out.

(I don't care... the jackass ref deserved it)

That was the closest I ever came to getting arrested... fortunately no actual arrests and I don't plan on having any!

Thank God they don't give a crap about that here in Canada. Even though my old man has season tickets now to the Leafs, before he did, me and my friends would always go get scalped tickets, right in front of the police half the time. I also go to tons of Blue Jays games every summer, and I only buy scalped tickets there, wait a half inning into the game and I get the baseline seats for half the face price. But thanks for the heads up about police actually caring about that, when I go to Houston I get scalped tickets without a second thought, now I'll be on the lookout  Wink

Yes, I've been arrested a few times, 4 times in the USA, 3 times in Germany, and 1 time in Spain. The reason was always something with alcohol, or weed, or a big mouth while drunk/on weed, or consuming too much beer/weed, or being suspicious according to the cops, or because the cops were bored, etc.

These arrests (and resulting nights in a cell Big grin ) never resulted in a court apearance or even jail time for me because the cops, or the attorney, or whoever, probably also thought that my "crimes" were too ridiculous to bring me to court for this.  Wink

However I was almost in jail: I had to serve a weekend-arrest while doing my civil service (my boss talked shit about me and when you're a civil servant you are under similar disciplinal laws than a soldier). Fortunately I could spent it in the civil servant rooms in the hospital where I served and not in a normal jail. It was fun actually, the nurses who were on duty on the station below also had to take care of me, and they tried to fool me as often as I fooled them. Big grin

I must have led such a sheltered life. I once got moved on by mounted police because I was sitting on the sidewalk in downtown Toronto talking to a vagrant. I don't know what harm we were doing.

I also once had an encounter with a British police officer when I was off my face and smoking a big spliff. He ignored it and we had a nice chat. That was really weird.

Three or four times.

All in all probably about six months incarcerated.

It was not at all like I thought it would be.

I was somewhat disappointed that I didn't get to see any prison sex.

Not quite, but came quite close. I was in Menorca on holiday and when to the airport, MAH, to do some spotting. Had my nice new sigma Bigma lens with me, and was shooting away on max zoom (doing wheal close ups on touch down) when I noticed that a car had stopped and out get two rather large Guardia Civil officers. They were pretty sharp at first and were all for hauling me in, but once they realised what I was doing and I'd showed them a few pictures they cheered up no end and let me carry on.

Technically, yes. Arrested by Detroit PD for assaulting the Mayor at the time, Coleman A. Young with a water balloon. I was off duty at the time and was at the hydroplane races on the Detroit River. As much as I would have taken pleasure in nailing that racist, corrupt, POS with a water balloon, it was a case of mistaken identity. Yeah, if I had a dollar for every time I have heard that but, in this case it was. I was arrested and unarrested within the span of about 20 minutes after the real culprit was located and confessed, quite proudly I might add.

Yes.

At Ft. Hood Texas by the DoD and Killeen Police Depts. For Rape.

Short end of it is: I didn't do it (that's what they all say, I know). I loaned my car to some pin-head in A-Troop 2/5 Cav that DID do it. Our physical descriptions were similar, 73", 180 pounds, Light Brown Hair, Blue Eyes. Ahhh, and my license plate from Alaska was a big help too.

I gave the info to the PD, they arrested the culprit and he's still in Huntsville as far as I know. Victim was 14 years old.

That's the only time.

I've had plenty of run-ins with the cops, but the only time I really came close to being arrested was back in the summer of 2004 when my band was playing a house party at what at that point had become a pretty infamous residence for those sorts of things in the Seattle suburbs...Anywho, a bunch of kids were outside driving around the yard in a Subaru, which eventually flipped over and pinned some kid's legs to the ground. The kid was fine, but nobody figured that out until after 911 was called. The cops showed up when my band was playing in the living room, and since I was by the window, I was the only one who saw the officer in the window giving us the "cut it off" sign, which I promptly answered with what equated to a "fuck off" sign. Mere moments later, the cops were storming through the crowded living room, hauling me outside still attatched to my bass and sending dozens of alcohol-wielding showgoers scattering into the woods. After being chewed out by the fat mustached cop with the cigar in his mouth (I didn't know they actually existed), it became pretty evident that they weren't actually going to do anything to me, but I got a pretty hearty tongue lashing.

If that wasn't enough, our drummer's uber-Christian dad had seen the whole thing (he found out just how godless the shows that happened at this place were and came to "chaperone") and banned him from playing there ever again...kind of a shame since the place was condemned and we were slated to play the house destruction show the next month, but oh well. Someone who would eventually become a good buddy of mine posted the following on some blog he had back then...

"tonight we were suppose to play at the bothell hellhouse but all did not go as planned. it was a great line up with good punk rock bands: (including US ahaha) the wobblies, contra, DEK. there were some other bands there that i dont remember as well. anyway the kids start drinking and yadda yadda yadda some kid flips his subaru onto his friends legs. the other friend calls the cops thinking his friend is like dead. they flip the car over and the drunken squished kid is fine so there was no need to call the cops. the kid went around limping chanting SUBARU SUBARU SUBARU. that was funny. the cops didnt actually show for awhile and conrta started playing. during their last song 4 or 5 policemen and woman come. they yank the bassist out the back of the door saying turn this shit off!

So yeah, almost.

Never. Came close twice. Once riding shotgun with a friend doing 110+ MPH on FM 1960 in Houston on Christmas Eve many moons ago. A car matching his car's description was used in a robbery earlier that night. Constable gave me lip and threatened to arrest me for PI. My buddy got hauled in on a traffic warrant.

Once in 2003 on Trop just west of the strip in Las Vegas for Jaywalking. Yes, Jaywalking. But once my ID came up clean and no drugs found, I was free to go.

Others in my family for assault, robbery, arson, attempted murder, murder, various drug charges, mail fraud, tax evasion, protesting, and assorted other crimes.

My father was pulled over speeding in rural northern Maine 2 years ago. A warrant from 1974 showed up. The Deputy just laughed at the 30 year old warrant, told my dad he is prohibited from driving in the State of Maine until he takes care of it and my mom took over the driving to MHT.

1978.

There's more to the story . . . I was working on my Jeep (yes a real Army Jeep) in the motorpool until about 0100 the night the crime occured, and I was working with my Company Commander, Capt. Cochrane, preparing for a Inspector General's inspection. Capt Cochrane was the HHT Commander, and he knew instantly when the DoD and KPD showed up and put the bracelets on that I was not guilty. After a short couple hours downtown, it was all ironed out. He came straight down to the PD and once it was known the incident happened while I was with him, working in the motorpool, it was only a matter of finding the asshole that committed the crime . . . didn't take long.

Once.
In 1992 in Los Angeles during the Uprising following the unjust verdict in the Rodney King police brutality trail. I was nabbed for 'curfew violation' even though I was 20 miles away from the Uprising in the LA Basin.
Luckily I was caught after I parked a stolen U-Haul truck full of furniture and electronics that sold for enough to pay my college tuition! Big grin

I got arrested Thursday, October 10, 2002 at the University of Illinois Assembly Hall during a Cher concert. There was a bit of a scuttle butt being started when Cyndi Lauper was finishing up her act by these white trash ladies that were behind us (us being me, my mom, plus her secretaries and assistants). We were standing because, well, for one, it's a concert, so duh, and for two, we were in the 5th row and in order to see...we had to stand up anyway. So it started with their mouths, then it started with them tossing stuff up at us, and knowing me, well, I had a few things to say about it, but nothing seemed to calm them. And thus it escalated with one of them jumping on the back of my mom's chair and getting all up in her business. Okay, at that point and time, they say don't hit a woman, but when someone is all over your mom like that....it is on. Yours truly emerged as the winner of the Mini WWF tag-team championship...Cher Edition, but also found himself being dragged out of there by the local authorities and straight into a Champaign County police cruiser...taken to the jail in Urbana, booked and released for the night on a Battery charge with an appointment the next morning in Arraignment Court, which went something like this --

Judge: "Please describe the exact situation at hand that lead to this charge you have against you sir"

Me: recanted the story

Judge: "I see. And what bar did this one place at."

Me: "Oh no, this wasn't a bar. It was at the Assembly Hall."

Judge: "But there was a Cher concert there last night, I was there."

Me: "Yes, sir, that is where it was at."

Judge: Priceless look of bewilderment on his face

Judge: (after a slight pause) "I've got nothing on this, you're free to go."

Nope arrested, but 3 points on my license and and £60 fine. All for not having 'L' plates up on my 125 scooter. I had to emphasise its a 125  Wink I must admit though the cop was genuinely nice and even complemented me on my tidy ride which was a very rare bike. Since that, thats the closest I've come to being arrested. Or done for anything.

It depends a bit on what you mean by arrested, in the hands of the police for about 5 hours and threatened with/promised 16 years in chokey for spying - yes!

How? Well I was booked on an Jugoslav flight at ?8 am out of Belgrade to Dubrovnik in 1985. Standing in the queue through many delays I and my wife got chatting to the two Americans next to us in the queue. After about three hours of waiting we were told the flight was cancelled, this after the bags were already checked in. Retrieve bags and asked how we were to get to Dubrovnik. Best way you can seemed to be the answer.

While waiting for the bags, a guy came up and did a "psst want a taxi". So I jokingly asked if he could take us to Dubrovnik. He said yes, and quoted a cost that was less than the air fare. So the four of us discussed it and decided since the taxi was a mod new Mercedes, we would give it a go.

The first 8 or so km went very well, Erni our new friend was sitting in the front running his video camera out of the cigarette lighter as its battery was dead. Then there were some traffic lights and a policeman directing traffic. It appeared that the policeman pointed in one direction and our trusty taxi driver went another and shouted some words out of the window for good measure - presumably swearing from the tone, although my Jugoslav linguistic abilities are extremely limited.

On we went, no probs, for another 4 or so km till we were right on the edge of Belgrade. I too was filming on an old Betacam, and just saw in the corner of my eye, flashing blue lights as two police cars overtook us and made us stop. They seemed to think that we were paying the taxi driver in US$ which was an offence, but we had actually changed sufficient to local currency. So we were escorted off to a police station to cool our heels while they took the taxi driver away for a "little chat". There we were in one of those beautiful woods, with dappled shade in the heat of an early autumn S European day, with the sounds of shouting drifting up through the trees from the police station.

Then it was decided that we would all go down town. And off we went again. Halfway there, Erni decided to unplug his camera from the power supply. The taxi driver decided he needed some brownie points with the police and pulled over and told them of our cameras which they seemed not to have noticed. Mine was off after I saw the police cars and Ernis would not work once unplugged due to the dead battery.

We went into the courtyard and were asked to accompany the police into the station but they seemed not to speak English. At this point Erni decided his civil rights or whatever were being infringed and requested a guard for our luggage while we "helped them with their enquiries". At that point, one of them did indeed speak quite fluent English and told us exactly what he thought of that idea - "a guard inside our police station ......"

Then they spent a while examining the cameras for evidence of what we had been filming. As they did not have a Beta recorder (yes they did exist in the mid 80s!) they could see nothing on my tape, and Ernis camera was dead, so the same deal. At that point they told us that spying was a serious offence and we could (confidently) expect 16 years. We saw no particular reason to doubt this part!!

For most of the questioning we were parked in a corridor with black marks up to about 15 cms height which we slowly realised were where boots had bounced off kicked shins. Every 15 to 20 mins, the doors to what appeared to be the cells opened and a group of 3 to 8 youths appeared looking rather the worse for wear. There was a toilet opposite with an appalling stink to add "atmosphere?.

After about 2 hours and considerable questioning, my wife suddenly had the presence of mind to produce the formal invitation to the meeting in Dubrovnik. "Oh" and "you know Professor X". Yes I know him. "In that case you can go, but you must get a TV licence."

"Aha" says Erni, "where can we get one of those."

In any information centre or police station, comes back the answer.

"In that case, we will get one here", says Erni, quicker than that.

"Ah not this police station."

It appeared that the main sin we had committed was taking a taxi to Dubrovnik, it was so unusual, no sensible Jugoslav would have dreamed of doing it. We wondered (darkly) what they did when JAT treated them as it had treated us.

So we were released, and like a good citizen, Erni took us all off to the US Embassy in Belgrade. After waiting for some time, we were admitted to an office where the guy listened very patiently to our story, totally without surprise. "Oh, are they doing that again, not much we can do about it" was his comment.

So some hours late, we did depart for Dubrovnik. Ernis wife had an excellent map, which was just as well, because the driver had no idea where Dubrovnik was. At road junctions we would tell him left or right (in German, because he did not speak English, and this was not really easy, because we did not speak German either!!). However, at each junction where there was a clear sign and we explained and pointed, he would stop and find a truck driver, chat away and then drive just where the sign pointed.

Of course the delays meant that we crossed the mountains in the dark which was a pity - I guess!

We arrived at our hotel at about 3 am, luckily the desk was open all night. The next morning we met up again with our new American friends, and half way through a cup of coffee, Erni suddenly explained the direction finding problems, the taxi driver could not read.

Does all that hassle qualify? Not exactly arrested, but definitely not free, and for good measure, we also knew the penalty.

ANC a question for you.....

How did you feel being arrested for sus rape? (on a 14 yr old as well)

I know someone who got arrested for rape and he did not do it but he says it was the most traumatic thing he has experienced and he still feels the stigma thats attached to it even though he was clean as a whistle.

I cant imagine hearing those words.....

Interesting . . . at first, scared of what the process was going to be but never worried about being guilty . . . especially as soon as things started come together - time, date, location, etc - I knew who the culprit was . . . and I knew I'd be home that night. Even if I hadn't been working on the Jeep with the old man, I'd have been over at Sheri Leigh's house . . . that was my girlfriend at the time . . . and her old man was in my Tank Company . . . if I wasn't working somewhere, I was with Sheri in those days . . . there'd have been plenty of witnesses to refute whatever. And I lived in the barracks then - you had to sign in and sign out. So, if I was "home" there'd be the log at the barracks, and plenty of witnesses there. I had a solid as gold alibi no matter what . . .

Still - pretty shitty feeling altogether. More embarassed to be hauled out of the motorpool cuffed upon reflection.

The only time I saw the criminal was at his trial - I had to testify of course that he had my car . . . I was on and off the stand in about 5 minutes. Pretty simple:

DA: "Mr. ANCFlyer, do you own a 1977 Ford Gran Torino?"
Me: "Yes, Sir".
DA: "Have you ever loaned that car to Mr. Kiddie Fucker?"
Me: "Yes, Sir".
DA: "Did you loan it to him on date ABCDEF 1978?"
Me: "Yes, Sir".
DA: "No further questions your Honor".

RE: Ever Been Arrested?

Wed Oct 11, 2006 6:52 pm

I've been arrest twice in my more youthful years - both abroad.

Once as an undergraduate when we were on a trip to Brussels and ended up drunk and partying on the roof of a downtown hotel. Police were called. I knew nothing about it all (having passed out) until i woke up in the back of a police car. More embarassingly my first thoguht was that i was in a cab and we were heading off to a club.

Got let off but we weren't allowed back in the hotel so spent the rest of the night at the nearby railway station Sad

Second occasion was in the mid-90s when i was teaching in Hungary. Myslef and some of my British friends (who also taught out there) decided to go on a trip to Vienna in my car - and from there decided to go to Bratislava for the day/evening.

This was during the bad old days in Slovakia under President Mecir. heading back out of town to the border that night, I got stopped by the police. Apparently i'd broken four trafic offences in one shout  Wow!

1.) Failing to stop for a police car - interesting seeing i was already stopped by the side of the road at the time (lost).

2.) Driving without a seatbelt - which i took off only when I had to get my documents out of the glovebox.

3.) Speeding - again tricky while stoped at the time.

4.) Driving the wrong way down a one way a street - gulity as charged your honour. Mitigating circumstances though - I failed to see the sign.

Lots of heated discussion in German results and refusals from me to pay large amounts of cash (claiming we were students from Austria coming over for the day and spent all our money - it was not a good idea to say we'd come from hungary at that time!) resulted in us being hauled off to the nearest police station.

At the police station there were more discussions, with my German being really tested. My friends (who weren't in trouble as passengers) helpfully told me. don't worry if you go to jail we'll get in touch with your parents!" Why thanks - I feel so much better !

Eventually with no chance of getting any cash off us - honestly i had none on me - they escorted us to the Austrian border (as Bratislava is right on the border), told us to leave and not come back !!!

The following week back in Hungary i was leafing through the Euro edition of the Guardian newspaper at the college and noticed a big article on the police corruption being the worst in Europe and how they routinely stopped Western-plated cars on trumped up charges to extort cash !!

Hmm, interesting, no mention of money from the Jugoslav police except the accusation soon dropped that we had been going to pay the driver in US dollars. Must have been a combination of different place and different time.

I don't think we were going to be able to volunteer any idea as to our guilt or innocence, that had been established by the cameras - wonder what they thought they were hiding!!

What got Erni excited was that he had written to the Wash embassy asking about permission to video in Jugoslavia, and they never replied - he was an administrator with a major US company so the failure to reply was a major sin to him.

Of course it turned out there was not such things as a TV camera licence and once we got to Dubrovnik, the place was overflowing with German tourists armed to the teeth with video cameras, and the Information office there looked at us as if we were mad when we asked for a licence - by then we were mad!

Definitely a combo of different place and certainly different time. In Hungary my experience was somewhat different. Having a Western plated car meant it stood out somewhat (esp having UK yellow and black number plates). But as my Head of Dept's brother was in charge of car crime at the city police station I never had any bother at all. Unlike the head of the British Council there at that time who was permanently followed by the police just waiting for him to make a mistake  Wow!

Shades of a German policeman in Essen in 1970, who leaped out from behind a parked car and pulled over my Austin Westminster with its GB plates. He yattered on in speedy German and my Scots friend decided he would play dumb, until the policeman got around to how much this was going to cost - none of which I understood. At which point my Scots friend "remembered" he spoke German and let fly a blast of German that sorted matters - amazingly.

Many years later, I got pulled over in Jakarta for "running" a red light (the taxi behind me was not pulled over), and the policeman wanted Rp10,000 (about 10 bucks at the time). An Indonesian friend in the passenger seat, who was usually quite mild- mannered, erupted in fury as that was twice the going rate due to my not being Indonesian, and guess what, Rp5,000 was quite sufficient after the blast.

I'm surprised. In most places that have laws against scalping, it's not illegal to buy a scalped ticket, it's the selling that's illegal.

Yes. Four times.

Battery, disorderly conduct July, 1996 $400 fine, one year probation, 3 days in jail. $1100 in legal fees.

Underage drinking August, 1996 $171 fine

Underage drinking, obstructing an officer October, 1996 $370 fine, lose license one year, letter of apology to cop

Drunk driving November, 1996 $684 fine + $200 assesment, six month license loss, one night jail - horrible insurance premiums for three years (that was probably the worst part.)

A really bad year. I've stayed out of trouble ever since.  angel

1) DUI/DWI

2) Driving on a suspended license.

3) Failure to appear in court.
