Borat And Kazakhstan

Mon Oct 16, 2006 4:20 pm

Hi everyone !
According to a local newspaper, the president of Kazakhstan is really offended by the character of Borat (played by Ali G), which represents Kazakhstan and it's people as a primitive and racist community. What do you think about it ?

Cheers

They obviously lack a sense of humour, but if the video is distastefully offensive they have good reason too.

Any link to the full story?

Quite an old story, but I think the whole situation has been very good for the Borat character, in terms of exposure.

The other day I have read in "Stern" magazine that Kazakhstan is thinking of sueing Sacha Baron Cohen, the man who plays Ali G and Borat because he -as Borat- said he is proud that his country -Kazakhstan - is an antisemitic country.
What you have to know is that Sacha Baron Cohen is of Jewish faith.
His reaction after hearing that he was about to be sued was giving a press statement as Borat in which he said:"I have no connection with that guy Sacha Baron Cohen but sue that d*** jew."
Again it is only funny when you know that he is of Jewish faith himself.

Right, but what about the people of Kazakshtan ? And what if Ali G used pakistanians, turks or arabs instead of them ? How would the world react ? He choosed Kazakshtan simply because hardly any people can find it on the map.

Some folks just need to lighten up. People joke about the US every day and if we got offended every time we'd be in real trouble.  Wink

Thats pretty nice if the biggest thing the president of Kazahkstan has to worry about is an obscure TV personality making fun of his country.

It's tells all about him and these people, if they cannot find 9th country by size on the map : )

btw, never heard about "Borat" before this thread. And still know nothing - video is banned in my office.

Kazakhstan is really multinational country - around 150 nationalities lives here.

And I don't know too many countries, where you can find orthodox church, catholic church, muslim mosque, jewish synagogue and buddhistic temple in one city.

I very bad choice of Sacha Baron Cohen. He should've choosen a non-exsisting country instead of Kazakhstan.

The joke is not on Kazakhstan but the US and British citizens. He uses his "foreign" attitude to start conversations about topics no citizen would start. He then shows the ignorance of the West through these conversations. Just watch the one where he talked to a Texas rancher about how Hitler was right and all the Jews should be shot.

I'm completly aware of that. If you were reading all the posts, I asked what would've happen if he choosed another nation (turks, pakistanis, isarelis etc.) for that role ? It would've been a big mess like the danish cartoons... He choosed Kazakhstan simply because nobody cares about them.

If all things were equal I would tend to agree.

But just look how even people in WELL known countries in Europe or America get really upset when 'stereotypes' about them are mentioned: Americans don't know geography, Europeans are softies. And those countries get the benefit of tons of media and cultural exposure.

How then should that country feel? Outside their immediate region, they get no exposure at all in film, sport, music, or anything.

And people in the West are dumb. 3 in 4 people that seen Borat will really beleive that's how Kazakhstan is.

I don't blame the President of Kazachstan especially as Kazakstan is not at all racist and there is no antisemitism there. However it is a joke. I really want to see the movie. I thin kit will be very funny to see.

A BBC link.

And I agree, the joke is really on the western people he interviews. Only some kind of idiot would think that is what people from Kazakhstan are really like.

I recently saw Borat on a Dutch talkshow, it was childish at times but still rather entertaining!

I've always found that the best jokes are at someone elses expense. As far as I am concerned, that is the case here, so I say, Borat, keep piling it onto those Kazakhstanis!!!

Wouldn't you be pissed off if he was mocking your country that much? Actually Borat's notes are in hebrew to make it seem like they're foreign, and all the words are hebrew and polish, or other eastern european.
