You Can't Trust The French

Tue Nov 07, 2006 11:45 pm

No, really. You can't.

I always thought of the French as solidly anti-american. So did a lot of americans, who took such serious steps to assert this belief that they had to rename their fries.

It used to be a simple world world out there: French were congenitally, impeccably and disrespectfully anti-american.

There was one thing you could trust the French for, and that was that you can't trust them.

And when I thought I had it all sorted out, I now learn that the French has decided to award their most prestigious literary award, Le Goncourt, to ... an American.

Par Toutatis, Nom de dieu et putain de merde, you can't trust the French.

That's wrong.

Yes he had the Goncourt, but he wants to be French, speaks perfectly French, and doesn't care about prices (and lives in Spain)  Smile

Only because the author writes in French. If it had been in English, not a chance! Big grin  duck

Well why should a FRENCH literary award be given to any work in English?
The clue is in the name.

I'm often amused at the award-literally a medal, awarded to who the French President considers as having made a great contribution to culture.
You get the usual suspects, but a few years ago, Chirac awarded this to Sharon Stone, for her acting.
(Or the old goat just fancied her and wanted to give her a kiss!)

On the other hand, though they were keen to get the jobs, tourism of EuroDisney, some in government were not so sure, a minister calling it a 'Cultural Chernobyl'.
Always amused me that, helped by having an element of truth, whatever you think of Mickey Mouse and co!

Why? It's also called MTV Europe awards even though 80% of the artists performing are from the US.

FRENCH literary awards could also mean that only French people have been voting

I doubt that the Booker Prize or the Pulitzer would be awarded for a book written in French...

There is an true story from WW2 that puts France, and the French, into perspective: After his liberation from a concentration camp, Baron Elie de Rotschild returned to his mansion on Paris' Avenue de Marigny which had been used by a Luftwaffe general during the occupation. Rotschild observed to the faithful family butler (Felix), that the house must have been very quiet during the war; the butler replied:

"On the contrary, Monsieur Elie. There were receptions every evening."

"But ... who came?" asked an incredulous Rotschild.

"The same people, Monsieur Elie. The same as before the war."

That's France, and that's the French.

There are two things that you can bank on with the French.

1) Dont look for them to back you up in a fight.

2) The Ménagea trois is the greatest thing ever invented.
Nice Trip Report!!! Great Pics, thanks for posting!!!! B747Forever

You have some "real" reading to do young man. Start with John Keegan's "The First World War". Then, you'll never say something so stupid ever again.

In the sense of "très con"? Absolutely. But some very apparent limitations will prevent him from getting it.
