BMW 335i Coupé

Sat Dec 02, 2006 3:39 am

In USA it costs usd 40.600 which are about € 31.300, in Italy it costs € 48.800 (usd 63.400).

But it's one of the best cars in the world.

Great!!

I'm usually a Volkswagen/Audi fan, but this time BMW really built a car I'd like to buy! I was actually sitting in one of those 335 coupés last week. Awesome!

I can't speak for the 335i, but I am very happy with the M car.

The 335i is a beautiful car; I was thinking about trading in the X5. And then your M car is in a league of it's own. But why in the name of all that is sacred did you choose THAT colour?  Wink

ahh...the outgoing m3 is one of the most beautiful cars ever...youve got to hand it to bmw for one thing especially, they really know style. the new coupe is quite attractive as well, although 63k USD in Italy sounds pretty brutal... as satisfied as I am with lexus (is 350), I still hope to someday own a bmw performance machine...the feel is just unbeatable to me and i doubt if it will ever be matched by an asian car company...not to mention (again) the effortless style.

The new 3 series however doesnt appeal to me as much.

What excites me is that the 335i has more horsepower & torque than the current E46 M3 (a lot!). Which means..... the new M3 is just gonna be THAT MUCH BETTER!

I really do like the new 3 series sedan, especially now that they bumped it up to the 335, but the coupe version just doesn't do it for me. Neither did the previous model. I think if I were ever to get a BMW coupe/convertible, it would be the Z4 or Z4 //M. (The 6 series doesn't do much for me either.)

Slightly incorrect. The new 335i has 3.0 liter twin turbocharged six cylinder putting out 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, while the current E46 M3 has a 3.2 liter six cylinder putting out 333 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque.

BMW has a history of not giving out the true hp figures.
Consider these numbers on stock vehicles - taken at the rear wheels. (Indicates atypical 25% power loss through the drivetrain.)

http://www.dragtimes.com/BMW-M3-Timeslip-10186.html

http://www.dragtimes.com/BMW-335i-Timeslip-9852.html

The above listed dyno numbers for the 335i project an actual reading of 350bhp and 360 ft./lb. of torque, rated at the flywheel, as all bhp ratings are taken at.

The 335i engine bhp is so undervalued by BMW - must be a reason for this.
I'll be picking up one of these soon.
http://www.vishnutuning.com/bmw_subzero.htm
With this, on 91 octane fuel, I can pick up 40bhp to 390bhp and 40 ft./lb. torque to 400, 100 octane fuel will give me 405bhp and 430 ft. of torque. Sounds like fun to me.

Even so, take note that on both the figures I listed and the figures you listed, the M3 still has more horsepower, while the 335i has more torque. So although the numbers are different, the principle remains the same.

Correct, showing a few more.

Yes, and torque (multiplied by the gearing) is what accelerates a vehicle.

The 335i has much more power reserve in it for the money, tuners will be on this like flies on sh*t.

I test drove a 335i while my 5 series was at my local BMW center for an Inspection 1 service. The 335i is the first of the "Bangle designs" that really appeals to me. The model I drove had the six-speed steptronic with paddle-shifters on the SW. Very impressive, and the first AT I would consider if I were buying new. However, at this point in my life I need a sedan ("saloon" for my Brit friends), and my e39 (in "Biarittz blue") remains a fantastic automobile.

Yessir. It will be an N/A V8.

While the 335iC has lots of modding potential with its Twin Turbo I-6.

That Laguna Seca looks great FX.

Well, I guess I will be the first to post in this thread as an owner of the above mentioned car. I tried for a few weeks to find one in Houston, but if you want one that's loaded (nav etc) then there is a few months waiting time. I managed to find one in Los Angeles (Nov 25th), drove it back.... and love it.

Here's a pic from White Sands, NM on the way back..

I happen to this this is the best car on the market when you consider performance, style, handling and sheer driving pleasure for the dollar. I drove one a few weeks back and it is nothing short of awesome. I would buy one in a second. I'm stuck for the time being with my E46 3-series, which isn't a bad thing.

Note to self:

Buy a BMW at some point in your life.

A 335i coupe would be damn nice start. Hey, it's only $40k, you can afford it.

It would be nice if it were only 40k. Once you start adding some options, it quickly becomes 47k, then add some sales sat and you are over 50k

Keeping the cost of a new BMW down:

Skip the "Premium package." Get the pleather seats (called "leatherette").

Skip the I-drive. Skip the "active steering" "active cruise control" "active headlights" and skip the annoying xenon headlights.

Get in black, white, or red. All the other colors are extra charge.

If they don't have one exactly like that on the lot (and they won't), just order it from the Regensberg plant and wait for it. Or fly to Munich and pick it up.

Annoying? They are pretty awesome when driving at night, lighting up much more road then standard halogens ever could. I would never buy a car without them now. They are standard on the 335i (and all versions of) now (along with the 530) along with the active feature.

Are those the ultra-bright, ultra-annoying purple headlights that blind us peasant folk on the roads?

Either that or have it flown in on LH468 (FRA-PDX)  Wink I would love to get the German version, complete with European "D" Euro license plates here in the states. Is the voice in the car in German?

That's the problem with BMW from what I understand. For a super high price, you get a basic car, then spend even more to get the nicer stuff. I haven't committed yet, but my next car will either be an Acura or a BMW.

How much more would the M3 be than the 335i?

No shit? I was thinking of silver, but I'd have to pay extra? Surprised the basic colors aren't black, red, and gold...  Wink

I wonder has anyone in Germany bothered to disable the 250 km/h speed governor and find out what is the top speed of the 335i coupe? My guess is that with that low-drag body and over 300 ps output, a top speed around 285-290 km/h might be possible without changing the gearing.  Smile

Two things:
There was no added charge for me to have Titanium Silver. Yes, it is possible to remove the 150mph limiter, and the actual realised speed seems to be around 170mph

Agreed. The only worthwhile option on the 3 Series is the Sports Package (or the Steptronic if you drive in heavy traffic regularly). The leatherette seats feel basically like real leather and are more practical, too! Very few will tell the difference. Even the basic version is quite well equipped.

The 335i is said to be very comparable to the E46 M3. If that is the case, the car is a bargain, provided you can get one for under $43K. With good lease rates, as the car holds its value very well, it is well worth it.

Or wait until the convertible comes out. That one will be really eye-catching.
