Without a doubt, my favorite female vocalist is Sarah Vaughan.

Ripping jazz singer, fantastic range, and pipes to kill yer all.

I was gonna say Terri Nunn, Sarah McLachlan, Shirley Manson, Gwen Stefani (In No Doubt, not solo), hell, even the chick from Mazzy Star or Yvonne Elliman in Jesus Christ Superstar... But who could possibly compete with the blue chick from The Fifth Element? The Diva rules!! Although Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) is a pretty good singer herself...

I just love some of the slow songs from Via Gra, a Ukrainian-Russian "girl trio". The lead actually has a very nice voice!

OK, this is totally subjective obviously, and it is so hard to pick...but here are a few of mine:

--Mahalia Jackson, one of the greatest voices of the century
--Billie Holiday, instantly recognizable and totally special
--Renata Tebaldi, had a great voice for Puccini
--Joan Sutherland: her recordings of bel canto stuff from around 1960 were the highpoint, began to decline afterward
--Dusty Springfield: At her best was one of the true great voices
--Esma Redzepova: If you've never heard her, what are you waiting for? Actually, they used some of her music on the Borat soundtrack, too.
--Joan Baez: The belllike purity on her voice on her early albums
--Kate Rusby: quirky and can range from comic to heartbreaking
--And a couple of the sexiest f**k-me voices: Justine Frischmann from Elastica and Saffron from Republica (the accents, the snarling confidence, yeah baybee!)

I loved Janis Joplin wailing away. Some others:

Grace Slick - Airplane/Starship
Joan Baez
Tracey Nelson - Mother Earth
Sandy Denny - Fairport Convention
Marianne Faithful
Stevie Nix. I always like Rhiannon.

My addition to the list would be Dido, maybe Neko Case too and definitely some old Roxette never feels bad. That's all I can think of right now.
