Well, I drink 12 Diet Pepsi a day on average, which I have been warned about by by a member on this forum. If I start getting those symptoms I'll stop, until then, it's 12 a day.

I can't drink caffeine but would recommend to anyone that 'need' a fix. checkmark

I had a professor, when I was still in school, have seizure during class because he drank a Diet Coke with aspartame. Very scary ordeal. Poor fellow couldn't drive a car for two years after.

Unless you want to be like the people who don't use cell phones for the "cancer risk," don't have aspartame. Everything is deadly at certain doses. Don't kid yourself, aspartame is completely safe 99.999999% of the time.

Here's a simple test that you can do to assess just one level of neurotoxicity:

Fill a shot glass with Equal, or some other nutrasweet/aspartame brand. Wet your finger and put it into the glass and leave it for 5-7 minutes. In some people, you will eventually 'taste' a sweet taste in your mouth.

This is both creepy and wrong. Tastes should not originate by putting your finger in a glass. Yet this has been proven to happen. Aspartame reacts with the nervous system in ways that aren't yet fully understood.

But then, I have always been a purist.

Aspartame is safe unless you have the genetic disease phenylketonuria. People with that have difficulty metabolizing the amino acid phenylalanine. There was a research project in the journal, Regualtory Toxicology and Pharmacology in 2002 that tested aspartame on mice. They gave mice 1000 times the highest human consumption (adjusted for weight) and found no ill effects. They then tested other animals. I only remember rats and dogs. Still nothing. If aspartame causes a problem its not because of aspartame, its because of the person taking it.

Interesting thread, one of my friends cannot tolerate Aspartame.

For years he was regarded as being epileptic because of constant seizures, then however somebody suggested that it could be the ingredients of the coke he drank which caused them. Well surprise surprise, he stopped drinking the coke and hasn't had a seizure since, it was then diagnosed that the ingredient Aspartame was what had been causing them!

He doesn't have any of the things that you mention Phoenixflyer, but even so, shouldn't products that contain Aspartame carry a warning saying as much that if you have, or may be susceptible to such an ailment, you should not consume the product? I mean we have warnings "May contain nuts" on packets of peanuts!

I drink loads of the stuff, and have never gotten like that lady in the article, i can drink it all day, so she must of really been downing it. Im addicted to the caffine i guess.

This has been an ongoing issue since Coke came out with Diet Coke with Aspartame.

If anyone cares to look back a bit futher into the past, they'll see that just like anyone who has a majority share in a product, little subliminal messages ALWAYS come out about their competitor.

The Sugar industry was PETRIFIED when Aspartame was developed, because it could quite have possibly spelled the end to using calorie inducing sugar, MEANING.. less profits in the hands of others.

All these tests and crap that have been done by these institutes are complete bullshit if you ask me.

OBVIOUSLY too much of ANYTHING is bad for you. Eat too many hamburgers = heart attack. Drink too much beer = cirrhosis of the liver. Eat too much sugar=Gain a lot of weight.

ONe diet coke a day is NOT going to kill you.

Here in Sweden diet coke today comes with the new (as marketed by Coca Cola) sweetener Sucralose. It is supposed to give diet coke a richer taste and indeed it does taste different from the old one with Aspartame.

The effects of these artificial sweeteners do worry me to some extent..but i just try to not over consume the stuff and i'm sure all will be fine. A bottle of diet coke once in a while will not kill ya, i'm sure.

Like so many other debates, I suppose the truth lies somewhere between those who say it's harmless and those who say you will get cancer merely by saying the products name.

Of course ANYTHING can and will be detrimental to your health when used in excess. The bottom line to anything is to stick with MODERATION, which seems to be a lost concept.

That said, I personally prefer good old natural ingredients (real sugar, real butter, real milk, and real beef).

The sweetener in SweetN Low is saccharin. Its been in use for a very long time and as far as I know there is no controversy over its use like with aspartame. Its much more stable chemically than aspartame.

Splenda uses sucralose. Its essentially the same as sucrose and is made from sucrose but has three hyroxyl groups replaced by chlorines, making it sweeter. There are some reports of thymus gland problems with some consumers.

Like everyone has been saying, moderation is the key. No one would argue that vitamins are bad but taking too much A or D can cause liver problems and excessive fatigue.

There was a big worry about aspartame being a cancer causing agent, but I think that concern has largely settled down. Now, the really problem is how awful the stuff tastes. Who thought it could actually be a replacement for sugar? Splenda's not nearly as bad, but it's still not the same thing.

Debates like this are rather ridiculous though. Even if aspartame caused cancer in some people, sugar causes hypertension in far more. 12 cans of Diet Coke a day is just as excessive as 12 cans of Coke a day.

The acids wear away at your teeth, too. So it's not just the bone-dissolving thing to worry about.

I'm not a fan of processed food period. I will, however, have a coke when I go get a dinner of steak or meat products. Otherwise, you'll never find a soda in my fridge. Grape juice, Orange Juice, the like. But watch out, because a lot of juices have as much sugar as a coke.

While the snopes.com article is powerful, snopes.com is limited by official sources , aka government agencies that can be vulnerable to industry lobbyists.

Wikipedia has something on it as well:

It points out some questions in regard to the approval process that, at least from the wikipedia article itself, seems not throughly answered and thus leaving doubts about the safety of the product.

People that drink diet sodas may not be taking in carbs from the drinks, but they are not satiating their carbs-crave either, so they will get it from elsewhere.
