FCC - Cable Rates Climbed 93% In 10 Years

Fri Dec 29, 2006 5:37 am

The FCC said that cable rates on Jan. 1 2005 were up 5% for the year and up 93% overall since July 1995. An emphasis on nominal rates that are not adjusted for channel additions and other qualitative changes was appropriate, the FCC report said.

Then it must have been cheap back then. Hell, I only pay $40-50/month for digital cable with HBO and Starz.

Supply and demand. I know I want my cable at home in ANC . . . and so does my Father.

The quality of the shows on the Boardcast channels - ridiculous reality shows  vomit  and abyssmal show qualities otherwise notwithstanding.

I remember the cable bill being something like $17 or $18 back "in the day."

I used to pay it as part of my "contribution to the household"...which also included mowing the lawn, watering the plans, vacuuming, emptying the dishwasher, doing the laundry, and shopping with my mom.

And to think my parents *never* asked me at all growing up if I was "different."

In all fairness, lets compare services from 2006 and 1996.

Sure, cable is more expensive, but let's look at whats out there today...

Digital Channels
HD Channels
On Demand
DVR recordings
Dual Tuner DVR recordings
Advanced Digital Boxes

and on and on..

Let's not forget, those popular Motorola Boxes that people have now (Comcast) cost the company something like $500, each. Now, divide that per month and it's still very costly.

Let's also remember such standout programming like ESPN are DEMANDING a premium for there service.. and lets not forget ESPN has something like 10 channels now, regular, ESPN2, the ESPN news channel, all the High-Def stuff, and then let's not forget that the Cable companies are now all having to upgrade their stuff to carry all this new digital tech...

While I think it's very pricey, every time I think of the cost of the upgrades happening everyday, I can somewhat understand the pricing.

What gets me about the Cable service is that they continue to improve the speed of their internet service, while DSL continues to decrease its price while keeping speed consistent. I'd love to stay where I'm at with speed (6meg) and start seeing price cuts...

just my opinion...

That 93% is for the basic services that were available ten years ago.
