Apple Release IPhone

Wed Jan 10, 2007 3:15 am

It's finally here! The keynote's still in progress but have a look here http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/l...-macworld-2007-steve-jobs-keynote/ for an idea of what's in store.

They mentioned it a GSM+EDGE phone so I guess I'm screwed unless I switch from Verizon (CDMA).

It looks like one hell of a cool phone. Apple has yet to let me down.

iPhone looks promising.

But pound for pound I still think the SE W950i is the best music phone on the market today.

I hope they release it as a PDA as well, no phone functionality.

I have wanted an Apple PDA for a while, but theres no way in hell Im getting a smart phone integrated system - its too bulky for me to take out on a saturday night, and far too much to lose in one package.

$599 for the 8GB model is a bit pricey... but it looks like its well worth it. If only it could ship sooner than June!

Cingular has proven extremely savvy in getting exclusive rights to the cool new phones. Good for them, something I will certainly consider when my next Sprint contract expires...

P.S. - If there was any concern that the Zune would encroach on Apple's market share, it's obvious that Apple has moved the bar yet again.

I'm not sure about this. is that $499 with two years service included or $499 plus a monthly fee?

You're right, reading what I posted again, I'm not sure. What SJ said was "iPhone prices include a 2 year contract - FYI".

If that means two-year service included, then it's quite cheap. If it means you have to sign up for two years, then it's expensive (IMHO).

I guess it's probably the latter.

So would the prices be similar for unlocked units? Because here in the Middle East you will never find phones that are locked to one network, and i'm sure Apple will eventually sell unlocked units.

But, I have to say I am amazed by the iPhone - my only problem with it is I won't be able to get it until the end of the year (I am going to be living in the UK by then). That said, i'm looking forward to buying a Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro this summer before i'm off to university... can't wait to switch!

Disappointing though that it only has a 2 megapixel camera when its competitors offer a 3,2mp camera and soon to come a 5 megapixel camera.

As you know, the $499 and $599 phones are locked and probably subsidized by Cingular. Unlocked versions will probably be around $800.

Availability in the Middle East wasn't mentioned, but you could certainly order an unlocked iPhone from somewhere else. It comes to the US in June, Europe in Q4 2007, and Asia in 2008.

The dates for unlocked phones are still in question.

Might as well switch, CDMA phones are being left in the dust. Plus, if you ever want to use your phone outside of North America, good luck with CDMA.

2MP is fine, if theres a decent lense. No point in 5MP when the lense is crap.

Why not just combine both a 5mp camera and a good lens? Nokia and Sony have Carl Zeiss lenses. Those are of good quality! And they already both offer 3,2 megapixels. Also 2 mp is good for small pictures, but not good enough for postcard sized pictures.

Depends on how broad or narrow a competition you're talking about. It's a nice phone anyway! I've heard rumours a few months ago that a touchscreen ipod was coming.. Seems like it could be true now that this phone is also based on a touchscreen.

Because higher resolution automatically comes with worse noise and contrast quality - manufacturing a 5MP chip which is actually as good as a 2MP one is quite a bit more demanding and expensive. There are good high-res chips, of course, but at comparable technology, the lower-res chip will often give you a better picture (more photons per pixel area -> less noise, higher dynamic range).

We'll have to see whether the iPhone camera is actually any good, but testers routinely warn against megapixel fetishism. Some even recommend getting an older camera with a lower resolution because of the lower overall quality of the newer high-resolution model.

In my face
You might be right. As you said, we'll have to wait and see how well it works.

A little off-topic, but
I am considering buying a Nokia N73 the day after tomorrow when the 6 month plan with my phone company runs out. Then I can renew it for another 6 months and get the N73 for around 50USD and keep that phone for another 6 months.. then at that time I might consider this apple phone.. who knows..

Or do you have any better suggestions regarding which phone I should pick?

This IS the long rumoured touch screen iPod. It has full iPod functionality with an iPod interface. Any further iPod model (6G, 7G etc.) will surely be based off of this design and employ the same technology.

Really, Apple are light years ahead of Microsoft in so many departments it's just embarrassing for Microsoft. Microsoft have only just gotten past the release of their so-called "iPod killer", and Apple come right back with a Zune-killer, smartphone killer, and PDA killer. You can bet that, come June, I'll be in line for one of these puppies.

Yes but I can imagine a cheaper version of this touchscreen device with only an mp3 player. Cheaper and with a bigger capacity. Or is it time to say goodbye to the pure ipods?

I don't think so. Not entirely anyway. I think Apple set the precedent a little bit when they began introducing contacts and calendar and games with their iPods, but it's still primarily an entertainment device. I think you're on the right lines with a cheaper iPod-only device. I'd like to think that at next year's Macworld, Jobs will unveil touch screen iPods and iPod Nanos. Either way...what a way to introduce the concept  Smile

No. It dosn't have 3G capabilities yet, so I'm not interested. Hopefully by 2009 when my phone contract comes around for renewal a 3G version will be avaliable. Untill then, I'll continue to consider an Ipod.

I personally think the iPod's best feature is that despite all of its added features over the years, it has always been very simple and its main use - listening to music - has remained the focus. I believe in the "if it's not broken, don't fix it" line of thinking, and I believe using the iPhone as a 6G iPod would be absolutely disastrous for Apple - not that I think they would do such a thing. Don't forget that the capacity of the iPhone is 8GB, while current iPod models go up to 80GB - it is very unlikely such a thing would happen any time soon to Apple's most popular product.

It's just you.

What do you think could be fragile about it? I can't see anything that you could break off even if you wanted to, (almost) no buttons to stick or fail, no hinge...

If they haven't screwed up with the touch screen surface, I can see this thing withstanding (almost) any kind of abuse.

Quoting 2H4 (Reply 37):

Definitely flash. If it had a harddisk, it would have at least 30-40GB of memory. 4 and 8GB are typical flash-based capacities (identical to the larger iPod nano models).

Which is a good choice in my view, since a pricey smartphone such as this shouldn't be mechanically fragile as harddisks inevitably are.

I think this is a very risky move by apple. Cell Phones are usually on and off the market pretty quick. If they can pull it off, kudos, but I think only one provider is also a little iffy.
Well I believe it all is coming to an end. Oh well, I guess we are gonna pretend.

Well, not completely different. It has the shape and curves that are reminiscent of the 5G iPod. I think this is just a natural development of that shape.
