How Did You Quit Smoking?

Fri Feb 02, 2007 11:43 pm

Folks, the thread about the French banning smoking in public places has piqued my interest this day.

Here's my story.

I'd started smoking when I was 12 (the old folks never missed the spare pack of Camels) and carried on at a 1.5 packs per day level until 1979.

That year, I'd went to my doctor for a checkup and asked whether I needed a chest xray and I'd had an off and on case of neuritis that had me thinking I was having a heart attack. He says "Nahhhh....you're feeling guilty about smoking. Relax....if I saw something on the picture there's only a 1 in 4 chance I could save you. But most smokers don't get lung cancer-but they ALL get emphysema."

So, I'd tried and tried to quit smoking in the past but it never took. One friday at work, I was sitting there and I finished the last Marlboro in a pack and said to myself 'I don't need this any more'. Six weeks later the Dragon Lady quit and since then we've been smoke free.

However, had we not lived in Los Angeles at the time with its intensely flavored poisonous air substitute, I'd likely have felt better and never quit.

Cold turkey. One day I said enough is enough and that was that. I can't say after 5 years that I don't have cravings, but I think of something different and that usually gets rid of the urge

I started when I was about 15 or 16. Schoolmates had offered me a cigarette on a train during a trip. I probably smoke 3 or 4 of those until I told myself "Why do I do this ? It doesn't even taste good !!!". Since then, I never smoked again.

Okay. I never was much of a smoker, but they do say the first cigarette is the one that addicts you !

So, I can proudly say "I stopped smoking, and it wasn't that hard "  Silly .

Looking back to these days, I bless my younger self to have taken this decision, as I know had I carried on smoking, the stopping would have been way more difficult (and I don't even know if I woud have stopped !!!)

Cheers,

Surprising... most french people I know smoke like Chimneys!

I was on a flight from Manchester to Tenerife once and the crew came round selling cigarettes... The lady sat next to me on hearing the price of them said "F**k it... At that price the kids can smoke, i'll have five boxes"

I smoked too many one drunken night last October. I´ve had a couple since but only whilst socialising, but have never had the urge to light up since then.

I also started smoking when I was 12, and built up a habit from just a few a day to two packs a day by the time I was 18. Then I saw a picture of what a smoker's lung looks like, along with the statistic of how each pack takes approximately two and a half hours of my life, and that was it.

How did I quit. Same as PanAm...

Quoting PanAmOldDC8 (Reply 1):
Cold turkey. One day I said enough is enough and that was that.

I couldn't bear the thought of my lung being black and sticky with tar, and more alarming the fact that I was slowly killing myself.

Quoting PanAmOldDC8 (Reply 1):
I can't say after 5 years that I don't have cravings

It's gotten better. It's been 10 years since I quit. I've had two cigarettes since; both of them when I've been out drinking and so completely bladdered that I didn't have the presence of mind to resist. The funny thing is that on both occasions, when I awoke the next morning, my lungs felt like they had been vigorously attacked by a cheese grater.

These days I don't get cravings much, and when I do I just put my mind to work on something for a few minutes and the craving goes away.

Well, I did quit cold turkey too, but I ate a lot of pogey bait for a while.

They had this machine up in the front of the place that had candies, and one was Bit O' Honey.

By the time you get one of those suckers unwrapped and clear of the wax paper and get it into your pie hole, you forgot what it was that you were trying to stop doing.

I picked up about 35 pounds over the years, too.

But I got a lotta new toys too.

After smoking nearly a pack a day for 10 years, I simply quit cold turkey.

You have to want to quit, that's the real catch. Most people say they want to quit smoking but do not believe that they can... or they do not feel they need to at that time.

I just had enough of it... to have a potentially deadly habit that makes you stink, wrecks your teeth, does nothing for you and costs you lots of money to feed just seems stupid when you really sit back and think about it.

You have to say no and stick to it... the best and most satisfying way to quit smoking for good.

It was kind of strange for me...I had tried to quit a number of times, tossing the smokes out the window of my Ford Falcon and then turing around half a mile down the road to go back and get them...but this was not one of those times.

I simply stubbed out my smoke in the ashtray, said to myself "I don't need this anymore" and that was the end of a habit that had consumed thousands of dollars and no doubt damaged my health. I guess I was just ready for the next chapter of my life to begin without tobacco.

About 10 years later I had that chest Xray for a job physical, and I asked the tech doing the reviewing what he saw-figuring he looked at a lot more xrays than any doctor.

He was flattered. He says "Oh...all this stuff looks really good. Not like some I see. Your lungs are in fine condition." A year later I got respirator certified at Douglas and came through the lung function test with flying colors.

Never started, despite my Mum and her family smoking like chimneys!

I think one thing that put me off for life was, when I was very young - about 5/6 - I was left at a friends house every night while my mother worked. One night I was given soup for tea and the little shit who lived there decided I would prefer it with the contents of an ash-tray added. Believe me, once you've been made to eat dog-ends and ash you NEVER want to have anything to do with the stuff ever again!!

I think you're exaggerating....there are worse habits, I think-amphetamine addiction, for one....dipping snuff or chewing tobacco comes to mind too.

There was also that guy and that horse...like tobacco, it killed him, but in a matter of hours. Personally I'd rather catch my death at the wrong end of a pack of Marlboros.

I never started the nasty habit. I am a smokeless tobacco user though and I know it can be hard to quit. From what I hear, start gradually trying to quit. Start smoking cheaper/less intense cigarette's, chew gum, stay active, ect.

Good luck!

After a few years of smoking about one to two packs every day, I finally stopped at the end of the previous year 2006.

Why? I began to hate the stink, the ugly colour on the teeth, the inability to run and swim longer than 10 minutes without risking a heart-stroke, the 200 euro I was throwing away monthly, and last but not the least important:

I hate to give money to some unknown tycoon that is probably laughing his ass at his huge mansion thinking "how it's possible that plenty of idiots are happy to pay to get poisoned?"

It's not simple: especially at the beginning, I thought I was getting crazy of jittery (sp?).

I never smoked, mainly due to seeing my father for too long hacking at the toilet almost every morning with flem from his pack a day habit of smoking unfiltered Lucky Strikes.
He quit in late April 1979, shortly after his first grandchild was born. Guess he got tired of the hacking, probably pushed from the doctor to quit and maybe he wanted to see his grandchildren grow up.
He could only smoke in very specified areas at work (he worked with explosives!) so that may have made it easier, but he went cold turkey and never smoked since then.
He is 80 now, and while he has other medical problems (some in part from his past smoking), had he not quit I suspect he would have died years ago.
Some states and city governments like New Jersey and NY City, have programs to help with those trying to quit smoking, including subsidies on patches, gum, group/buddy help and so on.

Cold Turkey. I smoked for 10 years and tried many times to "cut down" and always ended up back to a pack a day.
18 years ago, I just stopped one day and have not touched one since. I treat smoking like an alcohol addiction...... There is no such thing for me as a casual smoke. If I touch one, I know I will be back on it again.

Same here. I've quit a thousand times in the past, but had never stuck with it. It's been almost 30 years of a pack a day. 3 months ago I quit, cold turkey, and haven't gone back. It's getting easier as more time passes.

I quit by never starting...

Never fails, honest!

in all actuality, the best way to quit is to ponder the effects it has on your health. Once you realize smoking takes 10 years off of a life you only live once, the urge to have a smoke should be non-existent. Think about it...what would you rather have, cigarettes or years on your life...?

I am really upsest I even started but it has been like 6 months. I do about 2 cigs a day normally or a few more if I go out with friends. I need to stop, NOW. But just a side question? How long does it take to start damaging ur body, or till u start seeing the negative effects of smoking?

You guys who have quiet after many years of smoking, how are you today?

I smoked for about 2 years while I was in the Marines...at my prime I was up to 3 packs of Luckys a day...

I just got tired of smelling like an ashtray (and wheezing during PFTs) so I stopped cold-turkey. Threw out my last pack before I finished it...

As for cravings (and I had a ton)...I was a Psychology student in college at the time. I was learning about negative re-enforcement, essentially where your brain associates a negative result with an idea (think Pavlov and his dogs). It sounds crazy, but I started to take a sip of hot sauce every time I wanted to fire up...sure enough, cig craving = mouth of fire to my brain in about a week, and the cravings went away.

It sounds out there, but it worked for me. Didn't smoke again, didn't drop a ton of cash on patches, etc, plus it gave me something to write about for my final thesis in the class...

A.net is really good for a lot things. I have made the resolution that the cigarette i smoked today was my last. If I get cravings, maybe I will try what QXRamperMEII suggested. The things I my cravings aren't usually that bad as I didnt smoke while on vacation all december and part of January becuause my 'rents would have shot me dead on the spot. Big grin Got back to school and I started again. Lets see if I am strong enough to resist the urge.

Since it has only been a few months and never as much as half a pack a day, maybe 2 or 3 (i know one day is bad enough) is my vascular system going be ok? What about my lungs?

I smoked for about 10 years, 12-15 cigarettes a day (half a pack a day give or take). When I decided to quit here's how I did it, no nicorette or anything.

I counted how many cigarettes I smoked a day (12-15), I then restricted myself to that limit for a month. The following month I lowered my allowance by one cigarette to 11 a day, the next month I lowered it again to 10 a day, the following month to 9 and so on.

I got it down to one cigarette a day which I did for about three months, I smoked one cigarette at night right before I went to bed. One day I just did not have that one cigarette, and so I quit. That was 7-8 years ago, in the 7-8 years since I quit I've tried to smoke a cigarette on about 4-5 occasions, mostly when I was with friends drinking. I was not able to smoke the cigarette as I would cough and get sick.

It's been 7-8 years, I still miss it sometimes (mostly when driving by myself). Your body forgets about cigarettes alot sooner than your mind, for me it was a mental addiction.

The trick is to first get your daily tolerance down, it's easier to quit when you have a 5 cigarette a day habit vs a 15-20 a day habit.

Be advised I put on about 25-30 pounds when I quit, I worked out with a personal trainer to get the weight off but it took about 12-18 months.

I smoked a half a pack a day for decades. One December, I was in Cape Town spending the holidays with friends that both chain smoke. Their idea of interior decor is an ashtray on every flat surface. It was a 15 minute ritual every morning to go around the house emptying out the astrays + front porch + back patio, etc... On New Year's Eve, I was just about to light up when they asked me what my New Year's resolution was. I took the unlit cigarette out of my mouth, put it back into the pack, and tossed the pack into the waste bin (quite a dramatic gesture at the time).

The first few months, I found myself bumming just a puff off a friends cigarette, but forced myself not to buy let alone smoke an entire cigarette... just a single puff every now and then. After about 3 months, even in social/bar situations I found I no longer needed or even wanted that puff anymore. It's been 15 years, and I haven't smoked since.

I only wish I had made a better effort to loose weight and exercise more before being diagnosed as a diabetic. (Just 1 week ago)  Sad

I stopped smoking 9 years ago. I started smoking at 12 and stopped at 22. It sucked. But when the price went to more than $2 a pack where I lived it was time to give it up. I just stopped. I gained a bunch of weight because everytime I wanted to smoke I ate stuff. It really was hard when I went to the bar, but I got over it. I have not had a smoke since. I think about it from time to time and I know if I took one puff on a cigarette I would be hooked again. The only vice I still have is drinking. Sure Drinking is bad too, but at least if you have too many beers you have a good buzz going. Too many smokes and well nothing happens, at least to me.

Eventually I lost all the weight I gained, after about 2 years. The cravings went away after about two months. My dad also stopped smoking around the same time I did, but after 37 years. His experience with quiting was about the same as mine. Dad and I are still smoke free.

Dad and I both smoked regular Marlboros.
