Took a ferry between the two islands in New Zealand in rough weather about 15 years ago. Loads of fun.

I remember taking the ferry from Sandefjord-Strömstad once. Only 4-5 meter waves, but we'd hang over the railing up front (well our upper body anyways) and get sprayed with seawater Big grin Loads of fun Big grin

That video confirms why I will never set foot on a boat again as long as I live... I HATE open water. It's too unpredictable, then something like this happens only confirming the fear.  scared   scared

I don't even like flying over it...

The very slim prospect of me going down in a plane crash doesn't bother me that much. Drowning absolutely terrifies me...

I was on another ferry going through cook straight in seas like that and there was furniture flying everywhere, nobody could stand up properly, a truck in the car deck tipped over and there were even some broken bones. It was the worst crossing ive been in and almost everyone was seasick. The day after in the paper there was a story about how the ferry came close to capsizing because it was so rough.

Errr... I've been through rough seas and the last time I was able to enjoy it, but it was nothing compared to that ship! No thanks!

With a few exceptions around the world you're never more than 3 miles from land, it may be straight down but it's still only 3 miles.  Big grin  Big grin
There are some very nasty places on the oceans that are no fun to sail on. I rather be on a Destroyer or Frigate than a ferry any day.

Sort of reminds me of making the Aleutian run on the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry M/V Tustumena.

But seriously you guys are complete wussies-those are big boats.

Now Bering Sea crab fishermen, those guys are nuts-particularly snow crab fishermen.

If you want to know what I am talking about, take a look at these clips from "Deadliest Catch" and I can assure you that having lived out there a significant portion of my life, that ocean can get that wild.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the silent service subs?

They get to go under the weather.

yup, but back in the day they were:

a) diesel and had to come up within a few hours, so they spent most of there time at or very near the surface

b) having explosives lobed near a sub underwater generally will require either, sub going deeper for a very long time, i believe we are going on 60 yrs now and we are still waiting, or up to deal with those lobbing said explosives.

This was WWII through early 80's, subs being WWII up until early 70's if I recall. Ill have to go back and look.

Later on he was commanding the fleet via the big guns...but thats a whole other story.

Oh, you won't drown. You'll be glad to know that the chances of you even surviving the collision with the water are very slim. I always like the touch of having the lifevests to make people feel comfortable.  Smile

Admittedly a WWII diesel is more like a boat that can sink itself for a few hours as opposed to a craft that can travel underwater.

Actually there are many countries that still use diesels, most fleets are made up with them.

I remember my late grandad telling me awesome stories of his travels in South Africa when he was in the Forces and sailing round the Cape of Good Hope (?) round the southern most tip in some of the most horrific seas known to man. Wow!

Good vids and pics, thanks for posting!

I was on a ferry from Bar Harbor, Maine, to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, in the middle of a nor'easter once. That was fun. It was one of those high-speed catamaran ferries, so it slams through/into the waves rather than riding on top of them. I never get motion sickness, and I still was feeling queasy. Plus, they cranked up the air conditioning (apparently this cuts down on sea sickness), so we were all freezing. Not the best 3 hours of my life.
