Prince Charles Wants To Ban McDonald's

Wed Feb 28, 2007 2:57 am

He targeted the fast food chain as he attended the launch of a public health awareness campaign aimed at fighting diabetes.

A McDonald's spokeswoman said Charles's remark was "disappointing".

He's become an organic food fanatic, so his comments aren't surprising. However, based on the context of the BBC article, I think he was referring to McDonalds in the UAE.

On the other hand, maybe he hates McDonalds because they don't offer oats in a leather bag for his wife.

Indeed. But ban them? If people want to eat there, it's not the government's job to say no.

Methinks the Prince is being a tad overzealous here.

As has been pointed out, it should be down to the individual to decide what food to eat. In my opinion, the Prince would make better use of his time encouraging the people to eat healthy and exercise.

I mostly agree with Prince Charles. They at McDonalds can "improve" whatever, the bad and wrong thing is their basic concept and their basic food program . I admit that an actual "ban" would go too far and is unrealistic, but Prince Charles quite obviously WANTED to provoke.

THIS is exactly what he is always doing. But he knows that some headlines always are good. He of course knows that nobody will prohibit McDonalds now, but it is worth to be a bit provocative.

Boy he is starting to act like a king now with a decree that bans one of the most successful franchises in the world. What a pompous ass. The "prince" should get out more often. Not everyone has their own chef. I say it is past time that the Brits get rid of that snooty over paid public welfare recipient.

Well I agree with James. A lot of parents don't know squat about healthy food. And in the end it will become a public problem economically as more of the tax payers' money will be spent by the government on campaigns telling people to eat healthy food, and other expenses. It also means that more people will die earlier by a disease as a result of their overweight which means less taxmoney for the state.
It doesn't help either that many schools serve sh!tty food for the pupils, so they grow up knowing nothing about healthy food.

Ok, so McDonald's shouldn't be banned, but there should be taxes on fast food with a certain percentage of fat and calories in it. That's my solution.

This tirade against McDonalds from a bunch of Brits -- who invented those heart-healthy entrees called steak and kidney pie, shephered's pie, and bangers and mash -- is pretty funny. And the strains of elitism coming from those who would make "mum's" choices of food for her kids subject to government fiat is a bit rich for one of the world's founding democracies.

I dislike McDonalds, and I never eat there.

Well, it seems a bit of a coincidence then that it comes out the same time as the story about Connor McCreaddie (an 8yr old threatend with being taken into care because his parents were not feeding him properly) who weighed in at 15 stone 8lb - four times that of a healthy child of his age.

I find the suggestion that McDonald's should be banned quite insulting.

I'm a healthy person and am well aware of how important a balanced diet is. However, once every couple of months or so I go to McDonald's and have a burger, fries and Coke. Why? It's an indulgence which I enjoy. I'm under no illusions that it is anything other than fattening processed rubbish, but it's my body and my informed choice.

If people are too ignorant to realise that eating processed food on a daily basis is highly detrimental to their health then there is clearly an educational issue. Surely explaining the importance of sensible eating is more beneficial than simply banning a fast food chain.

I agree with you 100% on that, but .....

It's alot easier for people to point fingers and blame others for their own mistakes then actually trying to change their lifestyles.

They want to take out vending machines out of the schools here, why? Because the kids are eating too much junk food out of them. But instead of parent's actually packing their kids a lunch, it's a lot easier to blame the school district for their own laziness.

Hmm, I love McDonald's and eat there up to 5 times a month, but when I see those fat children there I can't stop thinking whether they are any good. Perhaps only fit or slim people should be allowed to eat at McDonald's.

The authorities have allowed him to stay at home with his mother now earlier today. His mother has promised to keep a strict diet going (he's already lost a stone since xmas). Also the other condition of him going home is the family are not allowed to discuss the case any futher with the media.

Ban them!

Why not?

It is the perfect thing to do to keep people healthy and not have to spend scarce healthcare dollars later.

There are plenty of things governments already regulate that are healthier choices for us, like air, water, pollution, tobacco, etc.

And that is the whole problem, genY tend not to do things in moderation. Look at it this way, factories pollute the air, you would assume that intelligent people would decide to cut down on that pollution for their own and everyone else's good.........but it doesn't happen and people suffer, so legislation and bans (DDT CFC's etc) are needed to clean up the planet.

Same with McDonalds, people can't think for themselves, eat a million big macs and try to sue because they get fat......someone needs to take these people out of the path of temptation.

And then there is the correlation between crime and junk-food consumption..can anyone name me a vegan mugger or tagger??????

people can't think for themselves,

Wow... just wow. I guess YOU can think for them?

Didn't say I could but i work with "Youth at Risk" and believe me, there are plenty of them simply cannot think for themselves, they get Snoop Doggy Dogg and Eminem to do their thinking for them and the EMO's who get Marilyn Manson to do it for them and some of their parents.....good grief!!!! When someone gives a kid Methamphetamine to sell at school, do you really think they are capable of making ANY decisions at all?? Same with people who stuff their kids with junk food, you should see the obesity epidemic amongst Pacific Islanders in NZ, you'd be wondering if the state or some other outside agency shouldn't be doing their thinking for them.

I don't contribute much. But I know the rules.
Obviously something you don't

There is no rule against it, that is why there is a "Quote selected text" button, we all been here a lot longer than you and have the ban-count to prove how well we know the rules.

...but as long as an individual hasn't been declared incompetent, they should be allowed to eat were they choose.

But at what level do you declare "incompetence"? Hitting an Obese BMI? Selling crack to your kids? I know the majority can make sensible decisions and lead reasonably sane lives but look at the impact the whacked-out minority have on the safety of our towns and cities, our schools and the finances of our countries as they eat themselves into a coma and expect the state to pay for their care.....wouldn't it be better if the state took charge at the top of the cliff? Be a helluva lot cheaper for one thing!

For admittance to a fast foot joint? As long as they are able to dress themselves and communicate. Having a means to pay for the food would be helpful as well.

The only way obese people threaten the safety of the community is if they try to sit on you. Or steal your lunch.

Sure it would be cheaper. The better option is education. Tell them over and over again that this stuff is bad for them. Then if they still do it, its their own fault. You won't convert everyone, but some will head the message.
I lift things up and put them down.
