Instant coffee was invented by George Washington. Really!

... ok, not that George Washington...  Silly

Another piece of useless trivia: said Mr. Washington was living in Guatemala at the time of his invention. Therefore, instant coffee was invented here Big grin

The Hawai'ian Island chain stretches from the Big Island to Kure Atoll. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaiian_Islands ), but the Aleutian Islands stretch farther, a tad.

Russia is the US's closest neighbor that doesn't physically border it.

The 3S aerial tramway which links two mountain peaks in the Kitzbühel ski station has the longest span in the world: more than 2.5km without a pillar. The rest of the measurements (cabin biggest height 400m above ground, pillar height 80m, total trip 3,6km, hauling cable diameter 54mm) are close to first too.

The Bugatti Veyron features an ABS emergency brake, so that you can pull the handle to stop the car in the event of a brake failure, all while retaining complete control.

Also, the spoiler kicks up vertically in heavy braking, just as in an airplane. It takes almost 1G of force off the brakes.

Actually yes, Alaska stretches past the international date line. Which would make it farthest east. Sine its past the IDL it makes it the farthest west also. the farthest north is obviously true.

It stretches past the 180 degree line, which puts part of it in the Eastern Hemisphere. The IDL doesn't have anything to do with it (and I think Alaska is completely east of the date line anyway).

Speaking of which...Alaska is the only US state to have a population density right around 1 person per square mile.

Yes, there is a zig-zag, to use a technical term.  Wink But Vik's point was regarding the Eastern hemisphere, which is defined by the 180-degree meridian, and that's got no zig-zag.

Because as a cat falls its muscles loosen and relax. The higher up it falls the more loose its muscles become making it able to absorb the shock better. If it falls lower to the ground its muscles are too tight.

Very very true. You cannot even fathom how complex bi-pedal walking is... We tried to simulate a human walking by a machine and it was just so difficult! In fact it was the subject of my friend's masters thesis.

Very few people realise that walking is very complex, from a mechanical engineer's point of view - Your body actually falls forward. Now to counter that, your foot comes forward as a reflex, and then your body pivots around that foot, to start the process again.

If you know the difference between the squares of two consecutive numbers, you can find the square of the next consecutive number by adding the next odd number from the difference between the previous two. In other words,

9*9=81
10*10=100
Difference is 19.
Add 21.
121 = 11*11

Or, a more complex number,

177*177=31,329
178*178=31,684
Difference is 355.
Add 357 to 31,684.
32,041=179*179.

Figured that out one day during Junior year of college in Intro to Business Statistics. Finding the squares of numbers up to 218 by adding the next odd number was more interesting than whatever it was he was talking about.

This "fun fact" is actually false.

A bullet shot from a gun will generate aerodynamic lift, as well as travelling over the curvature of the earth, thereby increasing the time spent in the air. The dropped bullet will not generate lift, and will be stationary with respect to the x-direction of the earth's surface, so the curvature of the earth does not come into play.

Now THERE'S a fun fact.  biggrin

Dallas, Texas, and the DFW Metroplex as a whole, has the highest per capita number of shopping malls in a city and metropolitan area in the United States.

Dallas has more restaurants per capita than New York City.

There are 19 billionaires living in either Dallas or Fort Worth. This ties DFW with London for the 4th highest number of billionaires in a city in the world. The only cities with more are Moscow (20), LA (35-40ish including the suburbs), and New York City (45).
