Did you see the opening sequence of last nights Life on Mars? In the style of Camberwick Green! Brilliant.

I tell you, the more this great series goes on, the more it creeps me out at times, your example being the latest one.
(As a child, I can remember being fascinated by the 'Test Card', so when the girl in it came to life in series one, it was deja vu with a twist).

Gene 'Camberwick Green' Hunt bashing up a 'nonce'?
Bloody hell, mental or what?

You know, one thing that makes me smile about this (utterly wonderful) series is the way it started off with John Simm as the big star, but Philip Glenister is just so magnificent as Gene Hunt that he now steals the show entirely.

Coming towards the end though now. It's going to be interesting to see how they finish it. Glenister on the radio a while back said "It's great. Trust us", so I guess we'll have to. They've been sure-footed so far.

Isnt it true that they are making a spin off series with Gene hunt as a copper, mainly set in the 70's? If so that'll be great!  silly

Btw that clip was hilarious!!

Yes, Glenister clearly relishes the role. Maybe the excellent John Simm deserves the odd break, as in the latest episode, since in all of series one, most of two, he's in just about every scene.

There are stories of one set in the 1980s, but I don't know whether that's got anywhere.

Yeah, I'm gutted. He's just going to wake up because they have said there won't be another series as far as I know.

Here's my favourite clip - Gene Hunt in his swimming trunks.  Silly

Definitely no more series. But I get the distinct impression it's not going to be as simple as just him waking up. Part of me wants it to carry on, but another part recognises that maintaining the suspension of disbelief would be impossible of they carried on with it, and how much better it is to be short and brilliant, rather than long and declining.

So we'll instead be able to look back in years to come and say how fantastic it was, rather than how fantastic it used to be. No doubt it'll get endless re-runs - a sort of drama Fawlty Towers in that respect, which was similarly wisely kept short.

Of course not! Big grin He did say though that all the cast read the final few pages of the script of the last episode with some trepidation because they were really proud of LoM and wanted it to go out with a bang. He said they were delighted with what they read and that the ending was really good.

He also made the point that he's really pleased it's finishing so soon, precisely because they're all really proud of it, and how much better it is to finish when people still want more.

John Simm stars in a Channel 4 period drama tonight, "The Yellow House".

Something to do with Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin sharing digs for a while. It's on at 9pm.

Im gutted ive missed out, ive only just watched 1 episode and enjoyed it, all my colleagues at work watch it and love it, i guess they dream of it being reality!
That clip in reply 7 was hilarious especially as he was reading out the "new" caution and had to re think and try and revert back to the "old" caution!!!! classic!

The producers have also sent little life on mars booklets out to our force to read and thats whats made me watch it absolutely hilarious. We have these characters in my office!

Ryangooner, you don't want those 'characters' being too like Gene Hunt and the other unreconstructed 1973 coppers now, do you!?
As you'll well know, they could not, not least due to PACE.

(Is the rumour true that some support 'Biff Squad' teams, like to have the Kaiser Chief's 'I Predict A Riot' playing in the wagon en-route to a call out?)

Life on Mars - quite possibly the best thing to hit my TV screen in years, if not ever.

I speak to soooo many people that haven't watched it and wished they had - if the Beeb bring out a box set at the end of it all, they'll make a frigging fortune.

One of my favourite clips was in the first series when Hunt described dwellers of the high rise council flats as 'jammy bas***ds' - hmmmm.

I too am sad that it's ending but ....

You can listen again to the interview with John Simm. It's mainly about his Van Gogh stuff, but there is Life on Mars in there too.

So anyone prepared to bet on how long it will take before ITV try to come up with "a not in any way similar" show where someone (played by an ex-soapstar of course) has an accident and wakes up in the early 1980s.  Yeah sure

No doubt with people driving around in Ford Mondeos and listening to the Happy Mondays.......

I notice that the US version has been delayed again. I wonder if they're going to get it right. I have a feeling that if they did, it would be just as good if not better (think Starsky and Hutch, Kojak et al in place of the Sweeney) but they might make a hideous balls of it.

In my view anything British the US networks rewrite for home use loses the whole essence of the original.

The list is too long to put here ,but
Sandford and Son
Keep it in the family
Dear John
The Office
etc
etc

The reason being that over here it is normally one or two writers involved in the series

Look at the work of John Sullivan

Only Fools and Horses
Citizen Smith
Dear John
Just Good Friends

Galton and Simpson

Hanckock
Steptoe and Son

However

I will say that given the humour content, i would make a bet that UK writers may have been involved in
Cheers and Frasier

Surely if the buyers thought the original was funny enough to import, why go to the trouble of changing it?

Perhaps Humour doesn't travel

Your quite right, wouldnt want those characters in the office however i can see simularities, maybe a few are modelling themselves on gene hunt etc!!
PACE will bite them on their bottom if they do!!!

Not heard the kaiser chiefs in the wagon but the odd tune becomes motivatonal!!!
