What Guns Do You Own?

Fri Mar 23, 2007 5:05 am

Ok, I had a brief stint in law enforcement until I decided to go where the money was. During that time I of course had to learn about guns. Well that turned into a small collection. I currently have the below but am looking for a good rifle and maybe a large caliber revolver. Any suggestions? And no, I am not going to buy a Smith 500. I shot 20 rounds out of one and my hand hurt while my wallet screamed. $2.33 a round!!

38 Smith & Wesson spl ss

9mm S&A subcompact

45 Rugar P90 ss

22 LR Sig Trail-side

45 Para Ordinance Warthog ss
It's not a near miss it's a near hit!!

lol  Leave him alone. He's just an enthusiastic new gun owner. Nothing wrong with that!

As a (relatively) new owner myself, I've contented myself with:
  • Springfield XD - 4" model - .40

  • Ruger P345 - .45

Thinking about a shotgun perhaps... my brother has one he never uses I could probably take off his hands for cheap.  scratchchin

Well technnically none. But my employer allows me to borrows a brand new Glock .40. They also let me borrow an AR-15 and a Remmington 870 12 gage...

Do they count?

Oh, sorry, I got carried away too on the collection. Well, I would highly reccommend the Magnum Research BFR. They come in several calibers and barrel lengths. If you want power when you need it but want to plink too I would reccommend getting one in .45-70. Most factory loads are fairly light (!) but you can also find loads that produce more muzzle energy than the .500 S&W are capable of. .45-70 factory loads are fairly cheap too, certainly much cheaper than .500 S&W factory loads.

.454 is a good choice for it's power range, but the factory ammo is still very expensive. In the same power range, I'd pick a .44 Magnum. The ammo is much cheaper, widely available, and there's not that much difference in energy.

Here's a pic of the long (10.5") barrel version:

You only needed a special license for the Kahr? What's up with that?

A good friend of mine just bought a Kahr. I shot it, it's more controllable (if you can call it that) than I thought it would be and not much bigger than my P3-AT. I am wondering how those rails are formed because it's like they are metal but there is no seam between them and the poly frame.

Does anyone know about World War II pistols?

Dad, having served in World War II, brought home a Browning (?) pistol, which is still in a drawer at home to this day. It is in a zip case. I have no idea what caliber it is, or if it's semi-automatic or automatic.

Any pistol experts here have any idea about what type of pistol I have? If so, fire away!

Well, I'd say there's a fair chance it's a Browning High Power. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Browning_High_Power_Pistol

Sorry, I don't have a photo of it--because I'm over here in London, UK, while the gun is still at home in my Fort Wayne, IN, area home. What I remember of it is that it is darker than the photo in the Wikipedia link, and I just remember it said "Browning" on it, and that it is in a shaped zip case.

It might have a matte-black finish instead of being blued and polished. If it's a Browning from the WWII era, I'd say it's most likely a High Power. Either way, when you get back stateside see if you can get a picture of it and PM me or post a thread with the pics and I'm sure we can identify it for you.

 yes

Quoting Walter747 (Reply 33):
My history teacher said that all Swiss men have to serve 2 years in the military and keep a gun in their house. Is it true?

Not exactly.

Breaks down like this: At youth age (about 19-21) you have to do a 21 weeks service, when they train you to be a soldier in three phases: firstly the basic stuff (shooting, tactical knowledge, physical training etc.), secondly troop specific skills (I, for example, am a Leopard battle tank gunman, so i trained to shoot the big tank gun in a simulator, learned how to deal with all the technical stuff inside the tank, etc.), and thirdly, the "field-training" (in my case that was real-life shootings, tactical exercises with the tanks, war-simulations tank vs. tank etc.).
After these 21 weeks, you'll be done with the "worst", and you'll have to go back each year for three weeks until the age of 30 (if i remember correctly) to "freshen up" your skills. Once you turn 30, you'll become a reservist, and some 10 years or so later you'll be completely released.

Just recently, they introduced a new rule that troopers can choose to either do it as explained above, or do the whole service in one, which would be some 330 days straight service.

Sorry for the shaky explanation, but it's late and i can't concentrate anymore Big grin

Quoting DL021 (Reply 37):

50 rounds in a closed box, but do not try to open this box, as if you do, you'll face hard consequences. (unless it's wartime Big grin )

Quoting DL021 (Reply 37):

Much to my shame, I don't exactly know, but i believe it's semi automatic. They never told us and i'm not much into guns, so couldn't tell  duck

Quoting DL021 (Reply 37):
How well do you shoot when you qualify?

I don't exactly understand your question here. You learn how to shoot during service, and after you finished your 21 weeks as explained above, you'll have to do a shooting test once a year at a nearby shooting range. If you don't pass the test, you'll have to attend some sort of curse to bring your skills back up. That's all I know. You also have to do this test during service, several times, and if you fail to pass, you'll be moved to a function where you don't have to use a gun (such as cook etc.)

I hope i clarified some points here.

Sandro

At youth age (about 19-21) you have to do a 21 weeks service, when they train you to be a soldier in three phases: firstly the basic stuff (shooting, tactical knowledge, physical training etc.), secondly troop specific skills (I, for example, am a Leopard battle tank gunman, so i trained to shoot the big tank gun in a simulator, learned how to deal with all the technical stuff inside the tank, etc.), and thirdly, the "field-training" (in my case that was real-life shootings, tactical exercises with the tanks, war-simulations tank vs. tank etc.).

Damn. From noob to qualified tank gunner in 5 months? That's some crazy European efficiency right there!

I don't have it anymore because in the job I was doing I had to check it in everywhere I went and that just became a pain, but I had one of these for a couple of years:

My wife has one of these:

Glock 23
Ruger Mark III
S&W 686

Remington 870
Winchester 94
AR-15 clone, home built by a buddy

I just bought a Superior Arms lower, so I guess that counts as another firearm.

I am almost done with my reloading for BHM. All that is left is a couple hundred rounds of 10mm.
