The first mention of Ayn Rand in this thread is from CastleIsland, the one member that can "get your Irish up".

Come on now, 'Fly, what UALPHLCS said was:

Quoting UALPHLCS (Reply 36):
There are very few people who "get my Irish up" as CastleIsland put it, and you are not one of them

I only used the expression in an IM to him.

Quoting UALPHLCS (Reply 33):
You've often described Rush's music as "intensely political." Wouldn't you agree that Neil's lyrics are not so much political as philosophical?

Perhaps so, but philosophical with a clear intent to apply to politics (or a lack thereof).

Yes but I really don't see any kind of political message in any of Neil's lyrics. In fact according to his books it's something he tries to avoid.

One could say everything in the world is politics. As I said, my reading of Neil's lyrics lead to a certain philosophical thinking which in turn lead me to the decision to support the Republican party in most things because it most closely adheres to my philosophy. But as Superfly can attest Neil's lyrics don't advocate becoming a conservative or a liberal. They are not political in that regard.

What are some of your favorite lyrics of RUSH?

Here are some of mine;

Mission

I watch their images flicker
Bringing light to a lifeless screen
I walk through their beautiful buildings
And I wish I had their dreams
But dreams don't need to have motion
To keep their spark alive
Obsession has to have action
Pride turns on the drive

Territories

The whole wide world
An endless universe
Yet we keep looking through
The eyeglass in reverse
Don't feed the people
But we feed the machines
Can't really feel
What international means
In different circles, we keep holding our ground
In different circles, we keep spinning round and round
..

They shoot without shame
In the name of a piece of dirt
For a change of accent
Or the color of your shirt
Better the pride that resides
In a citizen of the world
Than the pride that divides
When a colorful rag is unfurled

Everyday Glory

Everyday people
Everyday shame
Everyday promise shot down in flames
Everyday sunrise
Another everyday story
Rise from the ashes and blaze
In everyday glory
.
.If the future's looking dark
We're the ones who have to shine
If there's no one in control
We're the ones who draw the line
Though we live in trying times
We're the ones who have to try
Though we know that time has wings
We're the ones who have to fly...

A Farewell to Kings

Cities full of hatred, fear and lies
Withered hearts and cruel, tormented eyes
Scheming demons dressed in kingly guise
Beating down the multitude and
Scoffing at the wise
Can't we raise our eyes and make a start?
Can't we find the minds to lead us
Closer to the Heart?

Before And After

Well, now my story's over, baby
And I ain't gonna tell it twice
Well, you better start list'nin'
Or get out of my life

(Ok it's not Neil's lyrics but fun to listen to)
