Foods You Won't Eat

Mon Apr 16, 2007 11:08 pm

I love food and will try almost anything, but there are a few things I won't eat, for the simple reason I just don't like them. I don't know why I don't like them and have never had any bad experiences eating them. So for some unknown reason I don't eat mashed parsnips (no problem if they are roasted) or kidneys (yet liver is okay). I won't eat calamari either, but that's because it's like eating rubber.

So I was wondering if any other a.netters have food they won't eat, and they don't know why. I'm not talking about manufacutured foods, just basic ingredients, such as vegetables, fruit, fish or meat.

two things I won't eat:

Borscht --- a vegetable soup, usually including beet roots
Cottage Cheese

Other then that, I will try anything once.

Tomatoes. They aren't evolved enough yet to be eaten in their natural state. They need a few million years to firm up on the inside. And what is the deal with those slimy seeds? That is gnarly, brah.

Living in the southern US, I know I've passed up on some good ones, but there is no way I could eat those nasty things. Sun dried, they are OK. Salsa is marginal as long as it isn't "chunky". Catsup is acceptable on occasion. But I don't want a raw tomato anywhere near anything I'm going to eat. I don't even want to see them.

That is all I have to say about tomatoes.

You absolutely have to re-think this one. Poorly cooked calamari is like eating rubber, but properly cooked, it's absolutely fantastic.

Foods I ain't nuts about:

eggplant
green and red peppers
lima beans

I'll take your word for it CastleIsland, but I have never had calamari, either here or abroad, that you couldn't bounce off the floor. We were in a really good restaurant recently and had the sampling menu. One of the dishes was calamari and I was persuaded, against my better judgement, to try it as one of the guys had had it before and loved it. One piece and I'd had enough.

I'll keep an open mind on it though as it tastes okay. BTW have you tried roasted or barbequed peppers? This changes the taste completely and they are delicious!

Very few indeed, the only ones I can think of are:

Tripe
Jellied eels (although I love eel smoked or pan-fried)
Not hugely keen on tongue

Foods I used to hate but have conquered and love now:

Olives
Oysters
Liver

Kinda agree with you on the first one, Cxsjr. I never really got olives, but ever so often I'd nibble one and, while I wouldn't demolish a plateful, I can eat a few now.

Raw oysters are absolutely delicious with a good, home-made dressing. Heaven on a plate, but one of my mates keeps trying to put me off by saying they're like eating a large snot. Needless to say, he doesn't eat them.

Liver can be very nice, but I wouldn't be able for a lot of it.

Besides what I would consider gross, like creepy crawlers and other items eaten on Fear Factor, I would never eat Mushrooms. I don't care if its ground up and dissolved in a soup or sauce, I don't care what form it is in, I will know its there, spit it out and lose my appetite.

I was eating a veal potpie relatively recently, and this occurred. It was so gross!

I stick to muscle meats, fruits, veg, grains and dairy. I like most fish, except I'll pass on the "fruits de mer" with octopus and squid.

One thing I absolutely abhor is curry if it has fenugreek in it. It just tastes rancid to me, and I can taste it/smell it a mile away. Tandoori is great, Thai curries are great, but your everyday garden variety Indian curry, you can have my share and bury it if you want.

I'm pretty experimental though, I had guanabana nectar the other day, and while a bit bland, it was okay.

There is very little that I won't eat (well, of "traditional" foods anyway) but

I won't eat:

Shrimp: not because of the taste, but because my former kinesiologist told me it was the cockroach of the sea.
Liver: hate the taste
Soybeans/edemame: I believe it is unhealthy (it is essentially a hormone)
Raw fish/sushi: don't like raw meat

Not crazy about artichokes, cauliflower and brussel sprouts but will eat them if served.

I should have mentioned that I do make a pepper sauce from quartered, oiled and broiled red, orange or yellow peppers. Once blackened, peel off the skin, and puree the flesh along with roasted garlic, grilled onion, ricotta cheese, cream and tarragon. This makes a good sauce for chicken or lamb (red pepper sauce) or seafood (yellow and/or orange pepper sauce).

Green peppers are right out.

You know, this is the vegetable that most people love to hate. I never had that problem, but I wouldn't eat them often. Last weekend I had dinner in a friend's house and she barely cooked them by dropping them into a pot of boiling ham for a few minutes. They were the tenderest, most delicous sprouts I have ever tasted in my life! (She is a Cordon Bleu trained chef, so that probably helped).

I could live on artichokes (especially dipped in mayo, LOL), and brussel sprouts are yums if you blanch them, then sauté in butter--sometimes I slice them in half first. It's all in the preparation so they aren't bitter.

The only two 'standard' foods that I just can't stomach are liver, from any creature, in any preparation, except for Pate, and Peanut Butter Pork Chops (don't ask). Other than that, while I have some less than favorite foods, I'll try and eat just about anything (which is reflected in my waistline).

I hate most cooked vegetables. In particular, cauliflower and broccoli are at the very top of my hate-list. There's something physical, if I even try swallowing one of the 2 mentioned vegs, something bad will happen  vomit

What I'd also rather not eat is sea food, but at least it doesn't cause any adverse physical reaction - besides the slimy stuff, that is.

No cheese of any kind whatsoever (and I am thoroughly amazed how many restaurants will serve my meal with a sprinkling of parmeasan (if Italian) or queso blanco (if TexMex/Mexican) even though I said no cheese - I guess they just cannot fathom someone can do without the stuff altogether).

I am lactose intollerant and have only recently started drinking Lactaid skim milk - it took a while to get used to but I find it acceptable now and it does make the several protien shakes I drink every day more palatable. Cheese on the other hand is out of the question even with the availability of Lactaid pills and the like. After 35 years of not being able to eat the stuff, I firmly believe that you cannot just start eating it - it absolutely has to be an acquired taste that is developed from childhood. I cannot fathom my senses being any more offended by biting into a fresh dog turd than they have been when attempting to eat anything containing cheese!

In addition to cheese, I don't eat broccoli (tastes skunky) nor will I eat any organs or glands - muscle meat only.

For milk, it has to be whole milk. Ever had cereal with half & half?
I like the 100% natural granola & raisin cereal with half & half.

BTW, I've rarely done that. I'd be dead if I did it all the time. It is good that way however. I was full almost all day.
