I eat everything when it comes to fish/sea food, strange that I totally hate trout.

Well, I guess that there are millions of things I would not eat, especially when it comes to Chinese cooking. I eat things like snails or frog legs, no problem, but what I saw at some place in Hong Kong a few years ago was simply amazing.

The message you were about to post is too short and probably not of any higher value to the topic at hand. You should think long and hard before posting a message in this forum and make it detailed and a valuable addition to the topic discussed.

Two things which surprise me come up here again and again: mushrooms and tomatoes. Tomatoes are so universal that I just never thought of them being disliked, and mushrooms really are so bland that I wouldn't have thought they'd register at all. Having said that, I use mushrooms a lot in cooking and salads, but somehow they taste awful when turned into soup. This goes for the home-made stuff as well as shop-bought.

Cheese on the other hand is out of the question even with the availability of Lactaid pills and the like. After 35 years of not being able to eat the stuff, I firmly believe that you cannot just start eating it - it absolutely has to be an acquired taste that is developed from childhood. I cannot fathom my senses being any more offended by biting into a fresh dog turd than they have been when attempting to eat anything containing cheese!

I'm lactose intollerant too.... but I have no problems with milk or cheese or anything, as long as I take a few lactaid pills with the first bite. Been doing it for years.

1. Haggis ( but I watch Rebus!)
2. Black Pudding, or any blood-based foods.
3. Fromage a Tete (Head Cheese)
4. Eisbein - tastes good but looks repugnant.
5. Any organ meat - Brain Curry anyone?
6. Animal Skin - Chicken, Pig etc. but Fish OK.

I am also developing an aversion to the overuse of Olive Oil and Basil, and detest Focaccias.

Capers are a good way to screw up a really good sauce, and Olives should not be cooked.

I have only two rules about food otherwise I'm pretty omnivorous.

1) I don't eat anything without a backbone. Shellfish don't count.

2) I don't eat Fungus.

When fungus grows people try to kill it generally, I don't see why some people want to eat it.

RE: Foods You Won't Eat

Tue Apr 17, 2007 10:51 pm

Despite my skeletal build, I love to eat just about anything, but I do have limits due to medical issues.

Here are some things I cannot (and thus won't) eat--because of medical problems:

1) Ice cream and milk--I'm both allergic and lactose-intolerant. I used to love ice cream in my youth (especially strawberry sundae or Superman ice cream), but as my allergy has gotten worse over the years recently, I'm almost revolted by ice cream; it stimulates the production of phlegm that nearly clogs up my throat! Straight milk does the same thing!

However if milk is used in cooking, or if I eat cheese, it does not bother me nearly as much. Perhaps the allergen itself (some protein in milk) is altered or destroyed in cooking or cheese-making? As an alternative to ice cream, I love sherbets, sorbets, and Italian ices! (These are not creamy and do not stimulate allergic responses).

2) Wine--I have tried it a few times, but it is so bitter! My taste buds are so weak from the many surgeries I have had in my mouth and having parts of my tongue cut off and put on my palate. Thus I cannot taste anything in wine other than the obvious bitter tannins in it, which mask any supposed "flavour" in it. Therefore, I cannot tell a red from a white. I do not have a strong enough sense of smell or taste (or the "palate") necessary to distinguish between wines.

3) Anything hard to bite or chew--Due to mouth deformities and malocclusion, I cannot eat whole apples, pears, or other raw fruits without cutting them up really finely, as well as raw vegetables, steaks, corn-on-the-cob, etc. Things must be chopped up or in a soft, semisolid form.

4) Curries and thin soups--Too runny and soupy, and can go through the hole in my palate--very unpleasant! I like my soups solidified with oyster crackers into a semisolid mass, and I like really thick soups (split pea, etc). Thickened/solidified soups are easier to put into my mouth and don't run.

5) French fries (aka chips in UK)--I used to like them, but they are turning me off now. Just too many "pieces" for me to try to eat (as I struggle to eat and thus eat slowly), and not worth the time it takes to eat them. The worst offenders are fast-food fries, like McDonald's; these elicit a gag response.

6) Hard breads like those in Europe--Simply because they are so hard on the outside.

7) Any food that is in lots of tiny pieces or really crumbly--Although I like peas (if I mix them with something else), I have trouble with things that are in tiny pieces or very crumbly; the tiny crumbs or individual pieces/seeds invariably go down my trachea instead of my esophagus.

So, in a nutshell, the foods I don't "like" are really foods that give me lots of problems (both practical and medical) due to allergies, loss of the sense of taste, or my difficulty in eating and chewing.

Under things I would rather not eat are
anything with cream sauces
catfish
oysters
lobster
crab
orange colored cheese gunk that's squirted on chips and studded with jalapenos

veal (for ethical reasons)

Under the rubric of revolting stuff are

Sushi
calamari (fish flavored garden hose rings)
liver or kidneys
tripe
catfish
carp
gefilte fish
pickled pig's feet
pickled eggs
lamb and mutton

Definitly not cooked spinach, although in it's leafy state it's just fine.
I usually won't eat eggs. Every now and again I'll have a little bit of an omelet or scrambled or deviled. But very rarely and only a tiny bit. In big doses they make me sick.

I'm open to try anything at least once, sometimes that once is the only time though.

Tapioca seems to bring out such strong reactions from people. People have told me it's like eating frog's eyes, others have only been exposed to the pre-made crap. Tapioca made from scratch is probably one of my all-time favorite desserts. So are custards. I make baked custard in small coffee mugs sitting in a bain marie, and it comes out perfect every time.

Quoting CastleIsland (Reply 97):
I always thought those fruitcakes given away at Christmastime were used as doorstops.

I *love* fruitcake. A friend (who's since passed) used to start making fruitcakes around Labor Day--and they were enormous, around 5 lbs or more each. They were all custom-made (very little cake, lots of fruit), with extras of the good bits that each friend or relative liked. Once baked, they were all wrapped in cheesecloth, and each one would receive a dousing of Jim Beam every week while they matured. You knew you were in good stead with him if he added you to his fruitcake list.
