Outrageous Spending (not House, Car Or Trip)?

Fri Apr 20, 2007 10:56 am

After (accidentally) coming across some $50,000 used handbags being offered on ebay (hermes), it occurred to me: who besides the obvious billionnaire set can afford to spend the equivalent of college tuition on stuff like handbags?

What's the most you've spent on a single item -- not counting a house, car or trip?

I honestly don't think I've spent outrageous coin on anything...

For myself or for an employer or client?

For myself, I honestly can't think of anything. Actually, thinking about it, I don't think I've made any single purchase for myself over about $1,000 [excluding auto insurance on an annual basis ($1400/yr)) or my monthly rent ($1060)]

For an employer I remember spending about $8k on something once, but I can't remember what it was...I also co-signed off on something like a $200k technology purchase but that was a lot of small peices rather than one big item.

For a client, er, I can't really discuss that. But I was shocked when I saw the bottom line figure.

I didn't have anything to do with purchasing it, but one of our clients has wallpaper that reportedly cost in the neighorbhod of $1000 per square foot in a conference room -- no, I did not forget a period -- that is, one thousand United States Dollars per square foot or roughly $10,000.00 per linear foot of wall. For Wallpaper. In a conference room. I think the total bill just for wallpaper was in the very high 6 figures.  Wow!

Probably my first internet capable computer back in 1997, with a printer and other goodies for a total of close to $USD 3000. My next 2 computers and goodies for them were about that in total. Another item would be my airfare to Australia back in 1989 (from LAX, had FF points for EWR/LAX flight) at about $1,200.

Besides a car, I think I spent almost $1400 on my D80 and the two lens kit. Maybe $1200 on a pair of computers at a time, but that's about it.

Does my camper count? $18,500 in 1996.

How about a Laptop. I've had three I bought myself. This one was $1800.

My watch, $3,100. I liked the Brietling better than the Rolex.

My usual Airfare, ANC-CID is between $1500- $1800. I do that four/five times a year. Does that count as a trip? It's not really a vacation, rather a pilgrimage to stay in touch with my daughter.

Scotch Whisky. If I'm drinking it, it's gonna be worth drinkin'. Unfortunately Scotch is expensive - generally. $50-70 a bottle is not unusual. Does Booze qualify?

My daughter. An expense, that isn't an expense is her $12000 a year in Child Support. No matter what she needs, I'll get it. And most of what she wants, I'll get that too.

Well 28,000 for first year of school. Besides school and the car, probably the most expensive would have been Vancouver Canucks season tickets for $3,500 per seat.

Back in 1991 or so, I spent $600 on an early HP Deskjet. That thing was trooper though lasted me almost ten years. Spent over a thousand on a spur of the moment (drunken) RT F class to Hawaii from Anchorage.

Whenever possible, my next piano would be at least $35,000.

In a 12 month period ending last October, we spent approx $28,000 on 2 DSLR cameras, appropriate lenses, an Apple G5 quad and 30 inch cinema monitor, a MacBook Pro .... not to mention an additonal $40,000 on travel!

I'm assuming you spent $790 000 on your boat, its a very impressive looking thing. As for the watch I'd cringe if that was $460 000, one of the finest looking pieces of timeware I've ever seen, 18 carat white gold.

As for me, the most I've ever spent of my own money was for my iPod, $425.

I don't buy expensive sunglasses, cameras, watches or mobile phones, for the simple reason that they either get lost, broken or stolen. I'm HOPELESS like that.

I'm not big into material things anyway, but like to splash out now and again. I bought a shirt for €130 at Christmas and a Duchamp tie a couple of years ago for €100. Occasionally I'll go to a good restaurant with one of my mates, and the top one so far was the Michelin starred Guilbaud's in Dublin, which was €450 for dinner for two.

My biggest weakness is travel, and I don't regret a cent of the money I've spent over the last 35 years. I've been all over the world, and still love the buzz of getting on a plane and heading off somewhere different, particularly places like Asia and South America. I love the vibe in these places.

My biggest holiday extravagance was last year when I went with a mate to Australia for a weekend. We had a blast, and it was worth it just to see the look on people's faces when they heard. I don't know how much it cost, and don't want to. I never cost trips afterwards. What's the point?

Wow; exactly my story; I brought Sony Vaio laptop in Dec 2004 for $2,400.00 it was required, my then current computer was on its last breath.

Just in the last month I brought an EOS400D, I wanted to keep up with the Joneses at airliners.net  Silly

In 2000 I spent $5,000 on a return Business class fare from Brisbane to London that was worth every cent.

My biggest expense is travel. Just last month:

1- March 07: friend calls me from London, for a weekend in Prague. Total time less than 48 hours, 1000 Euros.
2- March 07: I meet up a group of friends on a skiing trip. 4 days, roughly 800Euros
3- March 07: My brother & gf travel from San Francisco for a quick tour of Tuscany. Me & gf join him, 800Euros.

And so the list goes on. Otherwise nothing material I can think of (other than cars). There's only a PDA that costed 800$ before getting stolen the same year. I use company PDA's since then, which is good.
Watches, clothes, leather jackets, cameras, gear, snowboard gear, sports, electric guitar and gear, you name it, none of the items, when singled out, topped 500$ that I can think of.

Things that came really really close:
- a Gibson Les Paul
- a watch
- an DSLR

Any of the above three might still happen any time. I'm glad I've resisted till now, though.

$ 6,500 on a new shed. How Many Drunks Does It Take To Roof A Shed? (by ORFflyer Feb 7 2007 in Non Aviation)

I've splurged on some good seats at Thrashers games a few times. But I couldn't bring myself to spending the over $200 for the glass side seats. I got a ticket one row back from the glass last season (IIRC, it was about $110) and for the last game of this season, I got a ticket in the club section which set me back about $125. The typical seats I get for a game are about $60. If it wasn't for my work schedule, I probably would have splurged on a season ticket plan.

I also recently splurged on some sports memorabilia as well. $300 for a signed and framed Ilya Kovalchuk picture.

Most of my splurges have been for my trips to Vegas, especially my most recent one.

And I thought the passenger that paid 5k for a Disney vacation for her family (a week for 4 people, including the flight from GUA) was spending waaaay too much!

I don't think I've spent that much money in one single item (not even on travel)... I did spend almost $300 in a CD once, though. Doesn't sound like much, but to put it in perspective -- I was earning a little under $500 monthly at the time, it was only one friggin' CD, and it wasn't even for me, it was a gift for a friend!  crazy

$10,000 on a little piece of plastic that allows me to operate aerial vehicles.

$200 on a leather jacket that I bought as a college graduation present for myself.

$1500 on a computer, and I'll never pay more than that for one.

$500 on a digital camera.

Spent $3000 for 10 days in Disney last year, just me and the 2 girls camping in Ft Wilderness, and going to the parks. Loved it so much doing it again this year.

My daughter comes to Alaska at least once a year, usually in the summer . . . .we take off in the camper . . . last year to Homer, Alaska; Seldovia, Alaska, Kenai, Alaska.

In other years, through the Yukon and Northwest Territories and Southeast Alaska. She loves it. As long as the Satellite Dish is working  tongue .

She will never NEED anything as long as I can breathe.
