I Just Saw Borat

Tue Apr 24, 2007 10:07 am

Hi all. I know this is probably a little late (Borat was released in November, after all) but all the threads about it have been archived. I just saw Borat last night. It was great until about the middle of the movie, then it tailed off a bit into the extremely absurd. What did you guys/gals think? Thanks in advance.

"This is my neighbor...he is great pains in my assholes. I get a window from a glass, he get a window from a glass. I get a step, he get a step. I get a clock radio, he cannot afford."

"Even though Khazakstans is glorious nation, we have big problem. Social, economic, and Jew."

Then of course they have the "Running of the Jew" festival in which the Jewish wife lays an egg and the kids beat up the egg, "before it hatches."

I cannot stand Borat, so I never saw the movie. People send me clips and I just don't watch them. I just don't find it amusing. Except for the Borat Baywatch thing, but that's it.  grumpy

I agree. I would've been just as happy if it were like 90 minutes of his TV show, of Borat clips...but because this was a movie, I guess they felt they had to throw in some lame plot. Many of the clips themselves were hilarious, but the pathetic scripted plot really killed it toward the end.

The running of the Jews was funny considering his background only.

The rest of his movie was poking fun at people so that he could make a buck. I thought that overall it was pathetic with long periods of unfunny moments.

I actually though jackass was funnier as they were all making asses out of themselves and not at other people's expense.

I've never seen my dad and my brother laugh so hard before...  Silly

As for myself, I didn't really like it. Some parts were funny (especially his linguistic skills or lack thereof), but the waiting inbetween these parts was blah.

Seeing that I kinda suck at reading emotions and whatnot, the humour is kind of wasted on me.  Smile

Agreed...the TV show segments of Borat were great...the movie, not so much, it was a huge letdown for me...

Absolutely, my problem with Borat wasn't necessarily the maturity, but the fact that it was done at other's expense. Its cheap shots at others for a buck. The people in Jackass know what the'yre getting into from the start.

I loved it. There are so many films which are suppoed to be funny, but aren't. This one is an exception. It had me rolling in the aisles. There were a few staged stunts which weren't as funny as the real ones, but it had to have some sort of storyline, otherwise it would have been a collection of TV clips.

The funniest parts were the rodeo scene, and the one where he's invited to dinner by a group of humourless conservatives.

Funny ass movie.
I liked his skits on "Da Ali G Show" better...but the movie itself was really pretty funny.

I bet you didn't like it when he was raging on the southerners and the christians. Awww poor babies.
Having grown up watching the lunacy that is southern "society" first hand, I thought all those scenes were HILARIOUS. SBC, NAILED the touchstones of southern society, and it was BRILLIANT. He showed these people for who they are, and I loved every second of it. To be fair I thought the preacher dealt with the situation with a good bit of dignity.

It was the best film I think I have seen in a while. These days it is very hard finding a movie that is not afraid to make fun of people (the Jewish example comes up). This movie had me rolling on the floor up and down the aisle (as well as everyone else in the theatre). I will give it two thumbs up for sure.

100% right. If the film had been risque and continued down the 'running of the Jew' route it would have had a point. Instead it had to resort to slapstick nonsense like two ugly men wrestling to pad out the film, managed to get some drunk college boys to be misogynistic and found a homophobe in a country of 300 million. The dinner scene didn't reflect at all badly on the families, despite them being goaded to say something offensive. What's worse is that Khazakstan is one of the least anti-Semetic Islamic countries.

The film isn't funny, didn't tell me anything I didn't already know and had to try really had to get any sort of 'humour' out of its victims.

What would happen if Cohen was not a jew? I mean honestly even though he is a jew but check this song:

But still Borat is great as is Sasha Baron Cohen

Watch out for his new movie:
