Post Your First Night Shots

Sat Apr 28, 2007 12:04 pm

Ok so I have not touched a camera for about 20 years and about two weeks ago I decided to buy a Canon XTi. I still need to buy a lens, but here is my first night shot ever.

If you guys still have yours, post them.

Thats pretty cool.

What would be a good laugh is for our seasoned photographers with their first shot and a recent shot. Kind of a before and after.

Here is mine taken from a guard rail post on the North end of Virginia Key, looking towards mostly Brickell and downtown Miami.

Well I'm not sure if it's my first, but it's one of my first night shots that I actually like.  Wink

Ain el Mressieh neighborhood on the northern coast of Beirut, Lebanon. Taken using Kodachrome 64 slide film using my Pentax ZX-7 film SLR. I have since switched over to a Canon Digital Rebel XT SLR.

The area has changed a bit since I took this photo. For example, there is now another luxury high rise condominium under construction between the two already existing ones. It's almost completed.

Well, here's when I first started with a P&S:
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o252/neces0c9/Nicer%20Images/grau.jpg

and

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o252/neces0c9/Nicer%20Images/greens.jpg

Here is months later with an SLR:

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o252/neces0c9/Nicer%20Images/Abenwind171.jpg

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o252/neces0c9/Nicer%20Images/Abenwind18356.jpg

You can see that I really had no idea how to actually handle the camera. However, the cameras were nice and prevented me from going away with absolutely nothing.

Cheers, and neat thread!

That first picture is funny. One set of lights turns, but the other seems to be coming in a straight line from nowhere. Is there an intersection hidden off the pic, or was it just a bad driver?

I recall it was a crossroads, though the tree obscures them!

Well it was one of a few night shots that I actually expected to get something with. TECHNICALLLY the first time I had the camera out at night I was trying to shoot the shuttle launch (that scrubbed) when I knew almost ABSOLUTELY nothing about the camera, and had it on a VERY flimsy tripod and it was windy as hell (ask Mir). Not to take a shot at people with parkinsons, but I think Michael J Fox could have taken better photos then I did that night.. off his meds. But it did teach me the valuable lesson of finding something VERY firm to set the camera on.

WOW!

These are fantastic! How do you do it!? What kind of cameras do you have, where can I get one, and how much will it run me? (just kiddin of course, im sure you guys have taken photgraphy courses and such)

But really, these pictures are really superb. Keep up the good work. These make me want to go out and buy a camera, even if it is the cheapest 35mm available.

Cheers,
Kyle

Haven't done much night shooting, but I like it a lot and would like to get around to more.

I like this one a lot--took it from in front our our apartment in 2005:

Big version: Width: 512 Height: 768 File size: 127kb

Here's an aviation photo I shot that I like, but is way too artsy to bother uploading to the database:

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 768 File size: 435kb

I do most of my aviation photography late in the day, but this is my only real night photo in the database:

These are both from London taken from inside of a moving bus. They are of buildings. I think they are both 2.5 second exposures.

Ok, so not technically night, but I love this shot.

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 768 File size: 446kb

Times Square in New York City. This was taken at about 10:30 so you can really see the light pollution from the city.

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 768 File size: 313kb

My friend Alexandra in front of the Church at my University. Taken at about 9:30, and the trees were naturally red because it was Autumn. The only light source for this image was a relatively dim light above the church doors lighting up her face.

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 768 File size: 225kb

Picture of the Rhone valley in Switzerland as seen from my grandmother's chalet in Ovronnaz.

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 768 File size: 169kb

Same shot a few nights later, at a slightly different time and angle.

Oooo, good pictures. I, too, have a love for extended exposure. Rich, you should take your first two and stitch them together for a nice panorama of San Diego (my second home).

Here are some from me:

Lastly, this is a shot of a jet-powered glider during a night performance at the Central Texas Airshow in Temple, TX, in May, 2005.

Thanks! That was actually shot from atop the space needle.

Seattle's a really cool city. Did the Boeing factory tour, rode the monorail, saw a little rain, etc. It decided to clear up for us on the night we were going to the space needle, so that was nice.
