Eurovision 2007: Who'll Win?

Mon May 07, 2007 12:03 am

Helsinki is beginning to look a bit as if the Olympics were in town, there are large screens installed in public places and chartered buses labeled "ESC 2007" are trudging around.

Any guesses as to this year's winner? Somehow the contestants don't seem as compelling as in the previous years, Ukraine perhaps may have a chance. Ideas?

Also see the official website: here!

I think Spain has another lame song. Again.. (sigh) Despite what you see in the Eurovision song contest, Spanish music is very good.

In fairness it's only become camp (like really camp) since a few years ago. Now the songs are dire, compared to before when there was some relatively good songs like the Norwegian one "Secret Garden" which won in '95, Eimear Quinn's "The voice" (Ireland) in 1996 and Olsen Brother's "Fly on the wings of love" for Denmark in 2000. It's all gone sadly downhill since then. The British entry should either enrage or delight A.netters with its aviation theme.

Denmark's entry.

I'm gona plump for either Austria or Ireland (have to support my own!).

Oh I apologise, I thought the song title was Secret Garden. Anyhow, the song is only one of a few which stands out over the past 10-15 years along with the other two I mentioned above.

"Played" being the operative word; there's hardly any vocals in the song bar the very start and the end! The rest is all orchestral, notably violin play by the....wait for it....Irish violinist. Not that I'm bragging or biased.

Didn't you see the song that won last year?  Wink

I did a review of the contestants now and shortlisted:

Belarus
Spain
Bulgaria
Denmark
Ukraine

Bulgaria is in fact very good, and may get my vote. Ukraine is strong, but may be slightly over the top. Denmark and Ukraine perhaps also target the pink vote too aggressively.

Sadly the Finnish and Swedish entries sound weak this time, I can't see why some people consider them favourites to do well. Last year both Finland and Sweden had excellent songs.

The St Carola of Sweden should have retired already 2006   I have been a fan of Ark for a long time, they are big in Finland, but they should have chosen a better song for the ESC this year.

Last night some drunk Swedish ESC tourists had their own 'show' in the Helsinki night, they sounded like Sweden is the center of the Universe, or atleast Stockholm is the ESC capital of Europe

About the winner 2007, I think the competititon is very much open this year, could be Serbia, Macedonia, Germany, Turkey, Greece, Russia, Sweden...

Among the semifinalists i like the most: Cyprus, Latvia, Andorra, Bulgaria and Turkey.
Among the finalists i like: Greece, Russia, Ukraine, France and Spain.

Judging from the rehearsals so far Ukraine and Greece look very powerful on stage. Russia has a great pop/rock entry sung by 3 stunning girls...however, their performance is very static and this might affect the final outcome.
We ve got a few more days to go until performances get improved. I just hope for a good winner with potentials of PanEuropean success like Sertab, Helena Paparizou and Lordi.

I quite liked that Danish duo, "Olsen brothers" IIRC, that won a few years back. Sure it was soft pop, but at least you could hear those two were doing it for the music and not "for their country".

BTW, anyone agree that the only reason why (s)he'd watch any of it is to hear "United Kingdom, zero points, le Royaume-Uni, zéro pwaahhnt"?  Wink

I have to admit that the Eurovision Song Contest is my personal Televisual highlight of the year! Sir Terry Wogan is so entertaining with his commentary, and usually has the voting worked out well in advance. There is certainly nothing about talent in the Contest - it is highly political, which is another reason why I like it so much.

Scooch have to be the most camp act the UK has ever entered, and the song is borderline pornographic! But it is very entertaining!!!

I can't wait for Saturday!

That's my impression as well, but there's a TV-show with representatives from all the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) every year, where they review all the songs before the actual ESC, and Germany scored very high there. Germany goes swing, in German nonetheless! It'll be interesting to see if it actually works...

There's been a substantial amount of research done on Eurovision voting behaviour. The countries are divided into powerful blocs that tent to vote for each other. The first such bloc was the West-European bloc where France, Belgium & co used to vote for each other, however it was broken with the flood of new East-European countries. Currently the blocs holding sway are:

It seems more than first expected, perhaps around 10 000 together. And it shows in a relatively small city.
I just read there are more members of the press than ever before in ESC, some 2500.

The nice thing is that City of Helsinki has organized lot of ESC happenings, for all. There has been a relaxed 'carneval' atmosphere.

The Ladbrokes betting agency has Switzerland with the fifth-best odds to win.

Their odds indicate the betting people's favourites:

1. Ukraine
2. Sweden
3. Serbia
4. Belarus
5. Switzerland
6. Bulgaria
7. Russia
8. Cyprus
9. Greece
10. Malta

Most of the better entries are on that list IMO, however I don't think Sweden will be anywhere near the top this time (they should have sent Carola again). Belarus, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Ukraine are my bets for the top places. I heard Bulgaria's song over proper loudspeakers yesterday and it didn't sound as quite as promising as over my laptop.

Ukraine's problem is that it will have to share the transvestite votes with Denmark, which may cost them everything. Their overweight outer-space act may also be slightly too preposterous, even on Eurovision standards.

why the UK actually bother entering this contest? We obviously suck at singing and our entries get worse every year..

Ukraine's problem is that it will have to share the transvestite votes with Denmark, which may cost them everything. Their overweight outer-space act may also be slightly too preposterous, even on Eurovision standards.

Ukraine is already in finals, Denmark has to get through today's semifinals first.
And Ukraine's Verka is beyond any transvestism, happily so  Wink If she/he winds, I will win 340 euros, so go Girl!

What an effing joke - not a single country west of Poland made it through to the finals. I guess thiss wil only serve to fuel the 'All the eastbloc countries are voting for each other' theroies..  Yeah sure
