Utter BS.

I'm watching it.

Each country should sing in their own language.

Not English.

Erm...I guess we may be watching a different contest then.

Neither would I!!...but then again, this is a song contest...not a legs contest, in which case of course Macedonia would be up there.

Spain, even though is far from being among the top/favourite songs, was way better than Macedonia.

So far, my favourites are Russia and Sweden.

Isn't Spain regarded as "African" in many parts of Europe ?

About the winner - there can be only one. Ukraine's Verka Serduchka rocks! What a performance... lmao!

Finland wasn't bad either, though. And they've set up a nice party there. Wouldn't mind another ESC in Helsinki.

As this is so clearly no longer a Song Contest, and is just a political vehicle to vote for your neighbour country or other friendly countries, I wonder who will be the first nation to say fvck it, and choose not to take part in this miserable "contest" any longer....?

As an aside, as UK PM Tony Blair is now leaving office in a few weeks, a good measure of his legacy for the UK after 10 years as PM, is that when he first came to power, the UK won the Eurovision Song Contest. Now it can't get any votes at all... . Wonder where that popularity went...?

The Serbian song was not my favourite, but I said right after their performance that they will make it to top 3 with that.

And about "neigbor votes" - those help you to the top 10, but not on to the very top. Turkey lands in top 5 every year, mostly thanks to their expat votes. Do they win? Nope.

And in the end - it's only entertainment.

Shame the Finnish song didn't get more votes, though. I really liked it.

Exactly my point. It is not all in 12 and 10 points. Serbia won because only three countries decided not to give us a single point.

Don't be tooo demanding Alex  Smile Your song deserved to win, it was a clear torch song, won because of the intensity of the song, clearly not the looks of the singer... but please don't whine that some countries still didn't give it points... it won with a big margin anyway and you don't hear me whining anymore about the Netherlands not even passing the semi finals, right?
Congratulations again, Serbia deserved it and I am sure it will put Belgrade on the map next year as a place to be.
Many of my friends visited Riga and Kiev, places they wouldn't have think of visiting if it weren't for the Eurovision songcontest...

You're right. There are some not very nice jokes in local forum about Marija's look. Interestingly, in national contest there was also a semi-final and final night. In the semi-final, Marija was in dress and was so annoyed and said she won't make the same mistake again.

I hope you will come here, too  bigthumbsup  Belgrade has so much to offer. Right now, it is still too early to talk about next year's contest, but the place where it will be held is probably "Beogradska arena" (Belgrade's Sports Hall), one of the biggest sports arenas in Europe. So far, European basketball championship was held there, as well as few concerts like 50cents, Phil Collins, etc.

Here are few pics of that place.

So, welcome to Belgrade!!!!

Another year in a row that the twelve (Turkish)Dutch votes went to Turkey, Thanks to all the Turks living in Holland and spread out through the rest of Europe. Shame on you giving votes to that awful song. Turkey, you could do better than that.

IMO Serbia deserved to win and Germany, Georgia, Moldavia and Hungary in the rest of the top5.

I think the reason Eastern countries do well is only in a minor way related to established voting practices. They use more resources to build their songs and they're simply better than Western countries' entries. In those countries competing in Eurovision still symbolises being integrated with Europe and it's more important for them.

What a glittering show, I'm still in Eurovision nirvana. Have to watch the final again today.

 redflag

It is 80% due to voting and 20% due to the crap they send to the contest...

... now why has the level of the entries from Western Europe sunk to a decadent level?

Because no matter who they send and how much they invest to come up with the best possible song, Western European countries do not stand a chance due to most Eastern European countries voting for their neighbouring country; and the voting in Western European countries like Switzerland, Germany or the Netherlands is highly influenced by immigrants voting for their respective country of origin.

And well deserved, I'd say. There's such fantastic Irish music - why did you send these folks? The singer's voice was even more horrible than her choreography, and the song was boring. What happened?

Quoting AviationMaster (Reply 131):

Excuse me, but - your country did send DJ Popo, right? And to add a bit of spice, equipped him with background dancers from the "Tokio-Hotel-in-15-years" lookalike contest. If that is what Western European countries define as "their best possible song", they'll probably never win again.

Our German participant, while being an excellent musician, never stood a chance from the beginning. He is an excellent performer, but the number of swing lovers out there simply isn't big enough. And before the contest, he was hardly known in Germany, not even to speak about Europe.

What could be done to reform the competition? You may consider that not every country gets the same amount of points to distribute. So that microstates could give only a maximum of 5 points, while the largest countries still have the full range up to 12 points available.

Would that help the contest? Somehow, I don't think so.

This isn't true - last year Finland won, and before that Greece. In fact, 1993-2002 no-one from Eastern Europe won the contest. Now that they did, it's suddenly a problem. Grow up.

This annual event shouldn't be taken so seriously. It is a celebration of camp after all. This east-west divide isn't the biggest problem: televoting is. Why does Ireland (apart from this year) get high votes from the UK? Why does Turkey get hig votes from Germany? Answer: the large immigrant populations in these countries always skew the vote.
