What's Your Cure For A Hangover?

Sat Jun 02, 2007 5:58 pm

First of all, when one drinks and falls asleep, you actually get very poor quailty of sleep for your body, which enduces the hangover. You may get drunk enough to want to pass out and you can sleep for long periods, however, the sleep you are getting is not good REM sleep that normal people have. This is why you wake up feeling "hungover."

My question to you is, what things do you do to doctor your hangover.

Personally, there are several, and somewhat odd things that I do. I find that very tangy and salty drinks, like bloody mary mix with some worchester sauce is quite appetizing after drinking the night before. Carbs are definitely on top of my list, but more so than others, I find that I search for a lot of liquid based foods such as soup (God there's a wonderful Thai soup, Thom Yum Goon) which is great for relieving hang over.

So what's your best hangover remedy?

I never get them. I always ALWAYS remember to drink water before I go to bed, at least a litre, and next morning no worries.

Besides, it is not alcohol that gives you hangovers it is sleep. When you go to bed you are fine, you wake up with a hangover, it must be the sleep!

The quickest and simplest way to get rid of a hangover is to take two soluble Solpadeine. For some reason the manufacturers don't like it to be sold as a hangover cure, and it's probably the reason that the stuff sells six times as many packets per head of poupulation here, compared to the UK.

Take a sachet of Gastrolyte/Enerlyte or similar. That's the kind of thing they give to malnourished/dehydrated kids in poverty to keep them alive.

Failing that, have a fast food breakfast. That never fails

I'll say water is the only thing that really works. Hangover come from body dehydratation from alcohol in the first place.

As Andz said, drink water before going to bed and when waking up. Soups work because it's mainly water, and they contain a few carbs as well.

this is scary; you've now made, like, two posts with a hint of common sense.
'Course, it'd probably be more accurate to have suggested abstinence from alcohol-in-excess, but still.

Yoghurt helps. Mostly the fancy bacteriological stuff, not that Yoplait Strawberry crap. And sunlight. It might sound horrible, but fins a nice spot and lie down. After downing a gallon of yoghurt, that is.

Man, with my job this summer, I won't be able to get any hangovers! I'm working 70 days straight, 2:30AM to 6AM...

My first thought, of course, was 'don't drink'. However, after reading numerous posts from fellow a-netters I know this is not even a remote possibility....so: cold leftover pepperoni pizza and flat Pepsi, followed by an antacid. OR, as many of my daughter's friends will attest: before you go to bed, throw up and keep a pitcher of water next to your bed for the inevitable dehydration.

My remedy begins when I finish drinking.

I will eat some pickles because of the sodium. Then have a few glasses of water then an advil.

The sodium in the pickles help you retain water so you don't get dehydrated. Always works for me.

Don't worry about the hangover, just stay drunk 24/7. Thats the best solution.  Smile

Otherwise, water always works for me. That and throwing up before going to sleep to get some of the bad stuff out of your system before you sleep.

Whatever drinks you take, they are usually natural foods, like beer brewed under the purity rules, hard drinks destilled from grains or fruits have all natural engredients and are rather healthy if taken in small doses. Same goes for all kinds of wines. Too much of anything might be bad, even eating too many apples at once.

NEVER EVER use pharmaceutics to kill hangovers. Mixing booze with this articifial stuff makes things worse.

2 Paracetamol and a pint of water before going to bed usually works well for me, regardless how much I've drank.

I know they say don't mix drink and drugs but it does work!

Just remember not to be like my friend and add in a few extra words like "2 PACKETS OF Paracetamol...". I made sure he did it correctly though.

as a couple others have said...the only real after the fact cure i believe is simply the intake of more alcohol. coors light, corona, and screwdrivers are some of my personal favorites.

the best way to avoid one in the first place though is to down as much water as possible right before bed (and hopefully a decent amount throughout the night of drinking, or at least as the night starts to wind down).

Just back from a three week trip to France and Spain where I had a couple of opportunities to try this one again: about ten glasses of water and one Panadol Extra does the trick for me. No headache, but you do wake up dying for a pee.

Oh, and one paracetamol-based Panadol every so often isn't going to kill you  Yeah sure

***WARNING***
This method I have described is in no way scientific, but was tested (in a past life) by many hurting subjects in a high alcohol consumption environment formerly known as the Phi Sig house at Washington State University.

Before bed drink a few bottles of water (and if necessary, chew up some TUMS). By doing this, you will be forced to wake up early in the morning to drain the bladder. After relieving yourself, try and get your mouth under the faucet and drink for 5 - 10 seconds. When done, take 2 aspirin (and if necessary again, chew up some TUMS) and head back to bed. Sleep for a few more hours, then wake back up and drink more water.. and more water.. and some more water! If your hangover/headache persists for several hours more, resort to the final option: have another beer.

When able to function again, to test that said hungover is actually gone and not just temporarily disguised: get laid and take a nap. If it all works out, you should be a functioning member of society in no time!

Best of luck, Godspeed.

When I know I'm going to be on a bit of a bender (rare occurrence these days, perhaps 2-3 times a year and one of them is better known as the A.net LAS Meet), I make sure I have a bottle of water by the bed. I also try to, if possible, drink a glass of orange juice before going to bed as well.

Hair of the dog works to an extent, but we don't always have that option available to us. One definitely is not going to go into work with liquor on their breath. Sometimes you just have to suck it up, down a few Advil (or whatever your pain reliever of choice is), and rehydrate yourself (non-alcoholically with something that is not a very sugary drink.) . Any sort of sports drink does help out due to the way the electrolytes in the drink react with the body (Which is why some folks in order to get drunk really fast will mix liquor with these types of drinks).

As a matter of fact, you don't sweat out ethanol. You burn it. Ethanol is one of few energy sources that can be directly used by the muscles. So you simply deplete it...

Quoting DSMflyer (Reply 35):

Well, that's only partly true. The main culprit is acetaldehyde, produced from ethanol by the stomach and liver using the enzyme called alcoholdehydrogenase. Acetaldehyde is further metabolized to acetic acid.

That last one is exceedingly BAD advice.
...never mix Acetaminophen with alcohol, before or after consuming it. The resultant mixture destroys human liver tissue at a rate far more dangerous than typical chemical/toxic exposure.

I've been doing it forever, and I'm perfectly fine. If you are heavy drinker and/or drink on a daily basis, don't do it. Occasionally mixing of alcohol and acetaminophen is perfectly fine. The reason that it is "over warned" is because of sue-happy America.

Thanks to acetaminophen, I rarely ever have a hangover. I always, however, will take it with a full 20 oz. bottle of water, and usually stop drinking a good 2-3 hours before I take the Tylenol.

A Bullshot...

60ml (2oz) vodka
120ml (4oz) Chilled Beef Bouillon
dash Worcestershire sauce
dash tabasco sauce
salt/pepper to taste

Put all ingredients into a cocktail shaker half filled with ice shake vigourously then strain into a glass half filled with ice cubes. Works every time!

The other cure that some here may have access to is a shot of O2. Flight Attendants have been using that trick for years to cure hangovers/Jet Lag
