They filmed the vary last episode of 'The Price is Right' is LA this morning. I loved that show and TV just won't be the same without it! Sad

What day does the final show air? I think it's June 17?

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in Nineteen Seventy Six, my aunt appeared on the The Price Is Right and she won a 1976 Ford Maverick coupe and a lifetime supply of varnish and moth balls. Yes here house STILL smells like it too! Wow!

Her's was banana yellow with plaid seats.

An icon in his own right as big as Carson was, if you ask me.

I haven't watched TPIR for years now, but I watched it when I was a lot younger, and Bob, all the way back to is days on Truth or Consequences, all the way thorugh 2007, the guy has been on TV for 50 years now. He did have hs fall from grace in the 90's with the report of his affairs, but he made people smile, laugh and have a good time.

He will be missed. May he enjoy his retirement.

There was an Australian version that was shown here up to a few years ago, with a couple of different hosts.

Larry Emdur (the final host) trying to calm down a freaked-out contestant....... a born game-show host...........

Well, all I can say is that he finally deserves to retire. After 50 years of TV hosting, I'm sure thats enough to give him credit that he was a great guy to see on TV or even meet in person aside from the 90's scandals.

What a sad day, wanted to fly out this past spring and maybe catch one last show, but alas time hasn't let me. This truly is a sad day for television.

What'd be great is if they could replay some of the older episodes, notably the ones where some people were extremely lucky winning showcases and such.

The Price is Right is the most useless, pointless, and worthless TV show ever. I don't see how Barker made it 50 years. If I had to hold that wienie microphone for that long and deal with people going apeshit over a fucking Cuisinart blender or some equally worthless prize, I would've gone off the deep end a long time ago. But kudos to you, Bob.

I really like the low-tech but very colorful stage props. I hope that never changes.

Wow. Sounds like someone woke up on the wrong side of the rock.

My Father-in-Law appeared on the show back in the early 80's. He was an LAPD cop back then and deliberately wore his uniform to the show to up his chances of getting picked. He did get picked and went on to win the showcase...new car, trip to Ireland, cash, pool table, bunch of other smaller things. The pool table is now in the possession and me the missus, and it looks like it's new; beautiful ornate wood, leather cushions. I had it re-felted a couple of years ago.

Just to clarify, The Price is Right will be back next year. Unofficial reports indicate the new host will be either George Hamilton, Entertainment Tonight host Mark Steines, or Todd Newton, who hosted GSN's Press Your Luck remake Whammy! and who hosts a live Las Vegas version of The Price is Right. However, if CBS hasn't made a decision by next year, Bob said he might fill in for at least the beginning of next season.

35 years hosting the same show. I wonder how Bob Barker actually pulled it off.

In contrast, over in Germany they had a show that was basically a German copy of The Price Is Right, but that didn't last for 10 years or so (I was already in Costa Rica when the show was axed).

I remember watching the first few seasons as a kid back in the 70s (the first year, the show was titled The New Price is Right); when it was only a half-hour show (usually the 1st & the 3rd contestant would make it to the Showcase). In its early day, the show was scheduled between The Jokers Wild (w/Jack Barry) and Gambit (w/Wink Martindale). A night version of TPIR w/host Dennis James also aired during the mid-70s.

Most of the time, the cars that were prizes on TPIR were usually compacts and subcompacts; larger, luxury vehicles would usually be part of one of the Showcases. I always remember Johnny Olsen (remember him?) listing the features of the car with the last item always being California Emissions.

I remember reading an article a few years back with Bob Barker stating the biggest change over the years was the car prices. When he first did the show, all of the pricing games involving cars only required 4-digits. I actually have the home version of the game (circa 1974) in my closet; needless to say, the listed prize prices for the pricing games were obsolete within 3 to 5 years.

I saw one of those in Dearborn two weeks ago. It was maybe a 1970-72 model, no 5 mph crash bumper. It was clean, but worn, probably original. The windows were up and it was 90 degrees so I guess it had A/C. It was bone stock right down to the dog dish hub caps.

My next door neighbor (1991-2000) was on the Price is Right in 1998, she won a bunch of furniture.

I loved the Price is right and watched every chance I got. I remember seeing Bob Barker in a Parade in Springfield, MO. in 1980.

According to CBS.com, the final episode will air Friday, June 15th in its regular time slot in addition to a prime time airing that evening right before the broadcast of the Daytime Emmy Awards. I'll will be putting that on the record list for sure.

Actually, during the first season (& maybe the 2nd season); the displays on the 4 Contestant's Row podiums were originally grey with the lighted number displays similar to what is seen on the Showcase podiums. The 4 color-keyed displays with the square number displays replaced them.

As far as pricing games are concerned; were games like Any Number or Lucky 7 modified to allow for 5-digit car prices or were those 2 games just outright dropped?

For the Grocery Game; did anyone just buy enough gum to approach the $7 mark (to win the prize)?

I remember one game (called Secret X, it was of a tic-tac-toe variety) where a contestant (this was from the mid-70s) place her 2 red X's (at best one can earn up to 3 X's) on the same side. Bob kept asking her if she was certain that she wanted to place her X's where she had them (which turned out to be a guaranteed loss); but she insisted. Needless to say, when the center X was revealed; the classic buzzer w/the music chaser (Boom-Boom-Ba-Doom... Groooooaaaaan)followed.

Yes her's was very basic but she did have the plaid seats. Too bad it wasn't the Luxury Decor Option. Sad

They have an even more restrictive exhaust, slower and control modules that are more expensive and harder to find. I am glad my Lincoln was originally a Missouri car with the 460cu". The electronic control modules on the non-California models are only $32 and don't die out as much. The California emissions module that came with the 400cu" is almost $100 and prone to die out often. Some just keep a spare one in the trunk.

The One Away game was set up for 5 digits, but I don't know about the others.

I believe Falstaff had in mind were the supplemental sounds and music in addition to the standard TPIR theme.

During the show's early years (the ones I watched/remembered the most) there were only maybe 4 or 5 different background music tunes TPIR would play (the one with the most/fastest tempo would be always used for the new car prize announcements/presentations). In the mid-70s, shortly after it became a one-hour show; additional background music tunes were added and the music used for when people were called down to Contestant's Row and when the winner would walk/run/jump onto the stage for a Pricing Game changed to a different type. The older type (music) would occasionally be used during one of the Showcase presentations.

This truely IS the end of an era. I do think the Price is Right will go on. It's only the highest rated gameshow in history, and the most watched program on at 11am eastern. It would be sad to think of Jerry Springer as "the saving grace" of TV at 11 in the morning... I am not sure of who would get my vote for the next emcee, but I am sure that they will look for somebody. They just cannot let the show die...

As Three Dog Night said around the same time the Price is Right debued, "I must let the show go on..."

I probably know of the sounds that you speak of; but not sure if a compilation album of sorts was ever done. That could be a whole new market to explore; supplemental background music from various TV shows. M*A*S*H during its early years, Star Trek (TOS), and Lost In Space had a lot of additional music beyond the standard themes. There are probably other examples out there as well; but that's another thread for another time.
