New Mexico recently came out with a similar one:

I like that one. Although it seems to have the same problem the Minnesota one does. Background is to bright, leading to not very much contrast between the background and numbers/letters. Makes it hard to read in the dark (and also a little bit during the day)

Very late 90's to 2005...

2006 - Current...

Ugly if you ask me...I'd rather have a plate I only had on my car for about 7 months...

Its odd here because Delawarians love their plates.

Certainly more than reisdents of Wicomico County! Everybody bemoans the people coming down from Laurel, Delmar, etc. to leech off of our shopping opportunities (meager as they may be) and driving like idiots to boot!  silly

Here in Maryland, we have an exceedingly boring plate. Seriously, something needs to be done.

At least you can get a Chesapeake Bay nature plate, which looks a lot better:

And in my home province of British Columbia, this is the standard plate, which I actually really like. If you're thinking that it looks pretty similar to that of Maryland, I'd argue that it's the subtle things that make the most difference.  Wink

-They used a nice blue ink instead of plain black
-They didn't use that stupid antique-store font that Maryland did
-The flag design is much nicer

Yup we do have plates with designs. I think the plate you have is the old Euro style plate, they want to change this to the new Euro style ones like what they have in NSW and VIC.

This is the general issue plate, they want to change this to the "Wine State" plate - the one I posted earlier on in this thread.

Others, these are the new ones, in addition to the ones I already posted:

It's absolute crap-a dark blue bar on top, then it cuts to the white background, then it cuts to the yellow bar. I much prefer the old one-they had a "fade" transition to it, making it more subtle. Plus the blue was better.

Well, being as I am from Namibia and plan to move back soon, here is Namibia:

N at the front for Namibia, W at the end for Windhoek, where I am from.

But I currently live in Kansas, so my current Honda Accord sports a plate that looks just like this:

The little code on the top left is a 2 letter code for whatever of the 105 Kansas counties you live in (the one here, SA, is Saline County in north central Kansas, where Salina is). I live in a different county.

These are Ontario plates

Pretty plain. Blue lettering in a 4-letter, 3-number combination that started with (I'm guessing) AAAA. They've since run out of A-letter combinations and are now onto B-letter cominations, for example, BAAA 123. Urban legend is that there are some cars out there with the letters spelling out BARF. I've yet to see one for myself, but I think that'd be pretty funny if they did. Trucks get black lettering in a 4-number, 2-letter layout. You can personalize your plates also there are some vanity plates such as those for sports (Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators), a Canadian Flag, and a Loon, amongst others

Standard Issue

Truck

Senators (seen often in my area)

Canadian Flag

Loon

Because I live on the border with Québec, I see these on a daily basis as well

Québec REALLY need to get a new plate. These have been in use in their current form for several years now and are terribly plain. The province has done so much work to create a standardized logo for itself yet the plates just lack. Their a white background with dark blue lettering in a 3-number, 3-letter format. Commercial vehicles use a 3-letter, 4-number format. Québec plates are not customizable and there are no vanity plates.

Since no one has put Massachusetts up yet, I'll do the honours (since it's my second home).

The current plates have been in use since god knows when. Originally they were introduced way back as vanity plates only while the standard plate was white with green lettering. Then they were made standard. The lettering format has recently changed a few days. Until around 2000 it was a 123 ABC format, then it became 1234 AB in 1999 or 2000. In 2002 or 3 it became 12A B34 and as of this year has changed again to be 123 AB4 which, in this case, the last number seems to be used in sequential order starting with 0, as that's the only number I've seen on these new plates (e.g. 482 YE0). Customized plates are optional. Massachusetts also has a plethora of vanity plates ranging from environmental concerns (right whale plate), to heritage plates (Blackstone Valley), to cancer (Conquer Cancer, Breast Cancer, Red Sox/Jimmy Fund), to youth sports (Boston Bruins/Support Youth Hockey).

Well, in DE, we an all number license plate system. Only time letters are used are in special plates and vanity plates. Its odd here because Delawarians love their plates. If you have a lower number plate, you are "better." We had a one plate of #33 go for $75,000 at auction couple weeks ago.

Question about DE: what governs whether you have the regular numbered plate, or the "PC" plate? Have always wondered about that.

Also - what is up with those small black plates that just say "DEL" on them. I really don't care for those.

Surprised not to see the only N. American plate that isn't rectangular. I'll give you a clue, it used to be used only in one jurisdiction, but now is used in two. One of these is not connected by road with the rest of N. America.

Happy searching.

Oh by the way. Here in Switzerland the plates are issued by each Canton. What can you say for a country that has both VD and BS on their plates ...

When Massachusetts introduced the 12A B34 format a few years ago they started with 00 endings and since zeros are indistinguishable from Os, I've seen almost every three-letter word with a double-o ending, including P00.

Nuevo Leon plates, that correspond to the state where Monterrey, Mexico is

The numbering for cars consists of three letters, and four numbers always.
About a year ago all plates started with R, to the point where numbers ran out (RZZ-99-99).
The new plates start with S (SAA-00-00). Because license plate designs change in each State of Mexico when a new state government comes in turn, the numbers change alot, hence plates starting with RAA, date back decades, and are no longer seen.

Plates for pickup trucks and other cargo vehicles start with a P, and contain another letter and five numbers. In this design that came out in 2004, there is state propaganda in the bottom left corner that say "Nuevo Leon, Estado de Progeso" which translates into "Nuevo Leon, State of Progress". We also have, like in other countries, stickers that certify that taxes (tenecias) are paid. Additionaly, there is a sticker that has to be posted on the car windows, that is a small, identical, copy of the license plates.

Old Nuevo Leon designs:

In both these designs there is a drawing of one of the landmarks of Monterrey, the "Cerro de la Silla", a mountain that has the shape of a horse saddle. These two designs are from past State goverments.

Umm...its probably the amount of people that are allowed to be carried in your car. Most regular cars are plain numbered while SUVs and Vans get PC plates. I think you have to be able to carry at least 6 more more to be considered because I've seen some cars which do in fact carry 6 so they are included and have the plate. But I have seen cars with RV plates which just boggles my mind so really, who knows what DelDOT is using to base the PC plates.

Quoting NYCFlyer (Reply 69):

Those are replications of the original 1947 Del. plates. You can only get them if you are plate number 87000 or lower since back in 1947, DE didn't have plates higher than that. It's just a nostalgic thing we like.

This is a Swiss plate from Kanton Zürich

On the left of the lettering is the Swiss cross and on the right is the Kanton coat of arms (in this case Zürich)

Normal Swiss plates have the 2 letter kanton code such as ZH or AG (where I live) and 1 to 6 numbers. The plate is tied to the driver not the vehicle and the person owning the plate can be looked up in either the book issued by the kanton or on the kantonal website. This is a great country for stalkers Big grin

The numbers are issued in batches, there are rumours that some batches are reserved for particular ethnic groups.

I think after looking at all these we have the most boring plates on the planet. But I guess we are a small place and islands so it isn't like you need to let people know where you are from!

At the moment we have a mix of these two with the second being the current type which was introduced in 2001.

So....

My former Irish plate (a bit different from Braybuddy's  Wink ) :

Tunisian Diplomat plates :

Can be :
CMD - Ambassador
CD - Diplomat/personal
MD - Diplomat/embassy vehicle
CC - Consular

Regular Tunisian plates :

The top blue one indicates a rental car and follows the same pattern as the bottom one (private car) :
In this case, 111 TU 8654 indicates the series (111 in this case, we are now at 128, 123 when I arrived), TU in Arabic for Tunisia and 8654 being the number.

The middle plate is the "RS" or "Special Resident" plates, those are for foreigners with tax-exempt status but with no diplomatic privileges/Tunisians who reside overseas.

Law Enforcement plates :

National Guard :

Trhaafic Police :

Police :

Customs :

I still need to document Army/Government/State plates though.

I have to add the so called "Versicherungskennzeichen" for small motorbikes and motor-scooters here in Germany:

This year's plate is green, next year's will be black, in 2009 it will be blue, and green again in 2010 (and so on). It is just a sign that your bike has an insurance, you don't need "real" signs because you don't pay taxes for these small bikes.

Usually you can't choose the letter/number combination at these plates but I managed it to get:

135 (my b-day)
PXP (my initials with a X in the middle)

for my motor-scooter.

Quoting LH423 (Reply 86):
That's only the second Mexican plate I've seen in the north of the US in my life. Hardly a week goes by where one won't see a Qu?c, Ontario, or Nova Scotia plate around here, but Mexican plates are a rarity.

Haha, I think it's the other way around here. I've only seen license plates from BC like twice, and Ontario probably once. Mexican plates aren't common in Southern California either.

Normal Greek plates:

The first three letters (only use the ones that are the same in latin alphabet) identify the part of the country) and then we have 4 random numbers.
