The Hayward Fault is doing a nice job ripping the city in half. I wouldn't want to be around when that thing snaps and produces an 8.2 quake.

I don't live on the fault line, it's about 2 miles away. Will I be safe?   Wink

Shouldn't be a problem. Just go into the basement and cover up with a mattress when you know it's coming.

Are you sure that advice is for an earthquake and not a tornado? Should I go to the southwest corner of the basement as well?

I was kind of wondering about that advice, I notice that AsstChiefMark is not from California. Most Californians don't have basements. Usually the suggestion is stand under a door jam as that is the strongest place. The natural inclination is to run outdoors, but that is considered to be among the worst thing to do as chimneys and power lines have a tendency to come down. What I did in the last two big earthquakes was in one of them I ran to my TV and kept it from from falling off it's stand and breaking, and the other one I went outside and watched the earth move. Actually Earthquakes can be kind of fun, they are really amazing especially if you have never been in one. It's been quite awhile since we had an earthquake, maybe we are due. The thing to remember is that earthquakes don't kill, it's the stuff that falls on your head that kills you.

Things that annoy me the most: -

*People who make up bulls***
*People who think they know everything (and are very annoying to those of us that do)
*People who don't take 'No' for an answer
*People with no manners
*People who are inconsiderate towards myself and others around them (like coughing without covering their mouths)
*People who think its OK to turn up whenever they bloody well feel like
*Liars
*BMW drivers
*People who can't drive
*People who dawdle at 50mph on a motorway (motorway limit is 70mph in the UK)
*Environmentalists
*Big-headed/cocky individuals
*Michael O'Leary of FR
*Cheats
*Manchester United FC
*Jose Mourinho
*Doom-mongers

All I can think of from now...

How can one person take up an entire aisle in a supermarket or shopping mall? I have never understood that.

If your ONLY source is FOX News or The Nation, forget it.

Here's another: people who insist, against all evidence to the contrary, that Fox News is right-wing.

That's become a truism, something that "everybody knows" that just ain't so. I've challenged people who insisted that Fox News is a shill for the GOP to provide a single example of news coverage that they saw on Fox and thought was slanted, and no one -- not ONE person -- has ever met my challenge. All they can ever do is name *commentators* like Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity. At which time I point out that Hannity is balanced by Alan Colmes, and that O'Reilly has the opposition on his show every day...and often even lets them have the last word. Then there's that known arch-conservative Geraldo Rivera...

I think what some liberals notice -- those who don't simply take it on faith that Fox is right-wing -- isn't right-wing bias, but an absence of the *left*-wing bias they've become accustmed to in the so-called "mainstream" media.

You say that like it's a bad thing. Of course, I wouldn't dare assume that you're lumping all political correctness together with the shenanigans of a select few publicity-whoring extremists!

Not saying "towelhead", "nigger", "chink" or "gook" is simply common sense and also courtesy. It's not like anyone can choose their (biological) parents, so the whole issue of so-called racial superiority is utter nonsense. We're different, yes, but only because cultures are often congruent with races.

Portland is a city of bicycles. As auto drivers, we always have to look out for bicycles. There are a lot of bicycle paths around the city, but some places, the road is just too narrow to allow a bike lane. I can deal with that. I can make room when there needs to be. Bicyclists go with the flow of traffic on the shoulder of the road. However, there are those that think the traffic lights and stop signs are for autos only. WRONG!

Some of the people I live with are really into FOX news. I have listened to their coverage of government events. I have not taken any notes on paper, but I remember thinking to myself "What is the other side of this story?" and "What else do Dems say?" more so with FOX than with NBC or CNN. I do ask the same question to myself anyway when I listed to ANY news source. Also, FOX seems more concerned with celeb gossip than news. I don't think FOX is "fair and balanced," but they are not as devilishly Conservative as some might say. They are still Conservative pundits, IMO.

It really pisses me off when you are driving in a shopping center, or a Lowes or The Home Depot kind of parking lot, and all the folks who are just walking down the middle of the thru-fare. It's one thing to come out of the store, cross the "street" and get on out into the parking lot. But the folks that come out of the door, get into the middle of traffic, and slowly waltz three or four rows down before clearing the traffic lanes are just plain rude.

Cross the street damn it - don't walk down the middle of it!

I personally can't stand:

Girls that deliberately walk slowly in school when i'm obviously trying to get past and I can't because they're linking arms.
Incorrect usage of there/they're/their.
Racists. You wanna go call somebody something offensive, do it to a wall. (For the record, i'm not coloured in the slightest, but it still offends me.)
Retards that find it funny to act tough and big with their friends then get all scared when I hit them because they've thrown food at me (Yes that's happened. His face as I was about to smack him was priceless.)
Homophobes. Any respect I might have had for you has just gone out the window because you should not insult somebody for something they can't help.
Disrespectful people.
People who are so obviously wrong and won't admit it because they're too much of a wuss.
Chavs (especially the ones that shout abuse at me...)

Will add more when i think of them.

People who cannot properly drive.

Co-workers who insist on talking all the time.

People who blindly toe the party line without considering that opposing views may have some merit.

People who insist on driving/owning unnecessarily large vehicles (ie. H3s or other land yachts).

Morons who ask dumb questions without attempting to see the obvious answer-my favorite is the people who ask which route the bus is on, not thinking to look at the destination displayed in 8" LED letters on the destination blind.

What I cannot stand about people (especially teenagers) is the fact that they have to compete to be the best-looking, best at sports, best at such-and-such, and then brag about it to everyone. I don't care if you won a basketball game or if you have the latest M.A.C. makeup, if it doesn't affect me, I don't really care.

I also cannot stand the shallowness of some people. "Oh, my god. You're like, fat. Get away from me you fat slob. Go eat some McDonalds or something." Grow up, whiny person.

One last thing: I despise people that only like a certain thing because their friends like it. Ex. "Oh, my god! Dane Cook is performing in City X!" "Do you know any jokes by Dane Cook?" "No, but my friend is going, and she likes him." (Just for the record, I do not like Dane Cook; I was just using him as an example).

Cheers,
Nik

I live in an eastern suburb of PDX. I end up driving everywhere because of the job site or time of day. But, when I can, I take Tri-Met, our public transportation provider. I usually only have my MP3 player with me. Two things bother me especially when I am on MAX light rail:

1. Tourists who don't know where they are going ask someone who is obviously a tourist themselves where a certain landmark is or how to get to a certain destination. These poor souls end up getting the grand tour of the metro area or end up in some part of Portland they really should not be in.

2. People who are on their cell phone talking over everyone else. I know no one wants to hear what I have to say except the person I am talking to if something is that important. Otherwise, I wait until I reach my destination and make the call after I get off the train or bus. Some people are so rude.

That just reminded me of 3. People who have their MP3 player turned up so loud, the driver can hear it! One time, I was sitting about mid way back on the bus with my MP3 player running. I could hear the one coming from the back of the bus and the driver made everyone turn theirs off! If I wanted to hear that kind of music, I will download it.

GO CANUCKS!!

Same here, I have a lot of colleagues and a lot of acquaintance but I only have one friend. We like each other very, very much and we have the biggest trust in each other, there is simply no other person in this world like him. We can tell each other everything, and together we went through super fun times but also through super shit times... I lost count on how many countries we visited together, on all the things we experienced together, and on how many Bundesliga games we watched together. Big grin I simply don't know any other person who had done that with me!

It took several years until we built up this strong trust into each other (we know us since ~15 years), so I agree again, I would never, ever find someone who would be that close to me... and on the other hand I would definitely nobody let that close to me!

IMO is the most important thing that you have a best friend who accompanys you through your whole life, simply priceless (there is VISA for the whores, the drugs, and the beers, though  Wink ).
