Ever Travelled On The Mumbai Local Trains

Thu Jul 26, 2007 1:02 am

Has Anyone been to Mumbai & travelled on the local trains out here.Very efficient system but too crowded.Even terror strikes could not curtail the crowd, but then most people had no other means of transport.

From what I hear about their trains that one looks down right empty. Cue over loaded train on bridge photo.  Smile
It's not a near miss it's a near hit!!

I rode the Mumbai local train in March when I was over there backpacking for a month. My fiance and I had just taken an overnight train up from Goa. That train didn't take us to the Victoria terminal so we got off a little earlier and grabbed a ticket and hopped onto one of the local trains to take us in.

This was around 6am and as we started stopping at other stations the train got more and more crowded. Luckily we had gotten seats and just had to squish in more. From what I could see it was barely standing room only with plenty of people hanging out from the doors just enough to not hit anything outside!

All in all it was a fun experience and one I'm glad to have done.

Edit: As for the question about did it smell bad, I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. India is a very overwhelming country of sights, sounds, and smells. By this point we had been in the country for 2 weeks so it was all normal to us.

Thanks! I just have this vision of it being hot and humid and on an overcrowded train without climate control antiperspirants would be stretched to the max.

Antiperspirants? Haha, I didn't bring anything like that with me for the trip. Just wasted space in the backpack! Like I said, had you jumped onto that train right from somewhere here in North America you may have been shocked, but once in country and somewhat used to everything it was just business as usual.  cool

Oh and if you don't want to be completely squished in these cars, you could always hop onto the 'ladies only' cars. Of course you have to be female to do that, however those cars looked much less crowded than the regular ones!

You got the less crowded time.Theres always the 1st class compartments which is normally less crowded.

With the massive population of Mumbai. You'll never be alone on the roads 24x7.

Now what would be the fun of being less crowded?  Smile I was pumped when I realized I'd have a chance to experience the commuter rail in Mumbai. Travelling like the locals is one of the best ways to experience any country, and it definitely gave me a new respect for some of the things I take for granted here in Canada!

Also Mumbai was an awesome town, I loved it. Took in a bollywood movie, didn't understand a word but still got the basic premise of the movie(a comedy so maybe that made it easier) and enjoyed it. Only spent 2 days there but it was very memorable before moving on to other points in the country.

A comedy called Hatr!ck.

I would like to see if I could track down a subtitled version over here just to fully understand it, the doctors character really seemed to have the audience laughing a lot!

I've definately been on a Mumbai Local...

By Myself, During Rush hour (5pm)....on a fast train from Churchgate to Andheri...2ND Class...now THAT is an experience...

Lets put it this way...i was so crunched in and a bit smaller (about 16 years old)...that i had to choose between...Having my feet on the ground....or Breathing air...
