Appalachian St. 34, Michigan 32!

Sun Sep 02, 2007 4:53 am

You heard that right college football fans. Two-time defending 1-AA champion Appalachian State beat Michigan in the Big House, 34-32, by blocking a field goal with time expiring.

"Hail, hail, Michigan, the cesspool of the West!!"

LOVE IT!!!

All I can say is wow...When I saw the halftime score I didn't think to much of it since I was confident Michigan would turn it around in the 2nd half. Oh well! That's good news for my Badgers!!! Of course, they still gotta take care of Washington State.
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

Darn Michigan probably thought it was still practice..Isn't the only game on their schedule is on Nov 17th. But really I supposed the Dump Carr movement is going to grow this week. But in the end, it was a great result for college football, much like the Fiesta Bowl was..the little guy goes stand a chance.

Michigan hasn't been the same since Schembechler died, not that that has anything to do with this season or even last year's bowl game.

The only (sad) solace Michigan fans can take is reveling in the successes of the Florida Gators.  stirthepot

As for me, being from Big 10 country, I'm ashamed at the football that's been played around here in recent times, thus, I'm going for my bro's old place, Clemson.

A little harsh. Michigan has had some damn good teams since Bo left the sidelines. They're a quality program, and, more of then than not, can be found in the hunt for a Big 10 or a National title. I just think Carr isn't up to the task any more to take Michigan to where it should be.

I seem to remember DLX going off on Florida about how they beat up on a D-1AA team on our schedule and it shouldn't mean anything towards the BCS.

Well DLX, at least my team beats 1-AA teams by a wide margin instead of losing. Let's hear you spin this one. I'm all ears. And don't give us some line of BS about how they are defending 1-AA champs. You're D1, you're the Big10, you're mighty Michigan...you never should have lost this game.

Well I just got done patching the hole in my wall. I was lucky to have some spackle in the garage. I do feel bad for that rock glass that I threw, it was an innocent victim. What a shitty game, I mean come on. Appalachian State? Are you serious? WTF. Thanks Michigan. I was waiting for Ohio State to fuck up the season, but you let some hicks from the hills do it for you. Assholes.

This game was expected to be such a blow out that the Vegas sports books weren't even taking bets on it.

I wouldn't exactly write off all Football Championship Subdivision (D-1AA) teams as cream puffs. When Marshall made the jump to D-1A, everyone tried to write them off and they've done pretty well for themselves. In 2004, Georgia Southern gave UGA a scare for the first half of their game.

I could actually see a few Southern Conference teams like App State and Georgia Southern a few years down the road (The NCAA has put a moratorium on any team moving up to the Football Bowl Subdivision from the FCS and FBS teams dropping down to FCS.

Texas had its fair share of difficulties against lowly Arkansas St., another "cupcake" opponent, from what I understand. My friend at the game was texting me saying how much their secondary is sucking. Oklahoma on the other hand has been pouncing on UNT's high school football coach all night.

That was a savage beatdown the Sooners laid on the Mean Green...now, Im all for running up the score, but only to a certain extent...this was taking it too far...79 to 10?? That's taking it to extremes...it'd be a slightly different story if OU was beating down a ranked opponent or a conference opponent, but all 79-10 vs. a non-conference patsy opponent goes to show is that Bob Stoops is still a classless SOB...

To further this point, I just read the game summary, and this bit makes me sick...

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/recap;...qINomAkVSnJocvrYF?gid=200709010024

"...and coach Bob Stoops called timeout with under 2 minutes remaining to preserve time for one last score. Bradford's 24-yard lob to Malcolm Kelly made it 49-0 as the Sooners received a standing ovation for hanging Barry Switzer's proverbial "half a hundred" on the Mean Green before halftime."

You're up 42-0 in the first half against a patsy who has ZERO chance of coming back, and you call timeout to run the score up?...classless act, plain and simple...

What exactly is Oklahoma proving by flexing their muscles like that? "Wow, we're big, we're bad, and we can pound the s*** out of a clearly inferior Sun Belt team, so watch out other Sun Belt teams?"...it may stroke their own egos quite a bit, but as far as Im concerned it makes them look like a bunch of classless a-holes to pound on a weaker opponent like they did... Like I said in my first post, its a different story if its a game that has at least some significance...I believe a few years ago Oklahoma pounded Texas A&M by a score of 77-0 or something like that, and as much as I dislike Stoops and OU, I don't really have a problem with that...that would be a divisional battle with meaning for division/conference standings...this game tonight is a much less significant game, no bearing on conference standings or anything like that...

Anyone remember that Houston SMU game back in was it 95'.....What was that score something like 92-10. You better believe if I were coaching I would have tried an onside kick just so I could get to 100. If I am a coach and I want to run it up then fine. I also realize that some day I may be on the other side and if they want to run it up then fine. Like I said I have no problem with trying to put as many points on the scoreboard as possible.

As a die hard Maize N Blue fan and alum today sucked big time. Lloyd Carr is our John Cooper! Our program has underachieved for the most part the past couple of seasons. I think OSU had a 6-6 season the year they axed Cooper and hired Tressel. I think we may need to do the same thing. Year after year "mobile" quarterbacks burn us big time. We still have no answer for that problem. We were outplayed and out coached. App State deserved to win the game. It was an embarassing day for Michigan and the Big 10. I am not too excited to see what next week will bring playing Oregon. The only bright side is that Norte Dame looked terrible against Ga. Tech. Maybe we will stand a chance to beat them. The writing is on the wall, Carr needs to go. I have been on the fence about this. Todays game convinced me.

No, one major win by a I-AA over a I-A does not mean that all I-AA's can beat all I-A's...look at the recent history of I-AA vs I-A...

According to http://www.i-aa.org/article.asp?articleid=46828 the record of I-AA's vs. I-A's from 2000-2006 was 52 wins, 353 losses...here are the wins during that time period vs. BCS conference teams:

2000: Appalachian State 20, at Wake Forest 16
2002: Villanova 37, Rutgers 19
2003: Villanova 23, Temple 20 (Temple was still in the Big East in 2003)
2004: New Hampshire 35, Rutgers 24
2004: Maine 9, Mississippi St. 7
2005: UC Davis 20, Stanford 17
2006: Montana State 19, Colorado 10
2006: Richmond 13, Duke 0
2006: New Hampshire 34, Northwestern 17
2006: Southern Illinois 35, Indiana 28

Obviously, even if you narrow it down to BCS teams, the I-AA wins were not against what one would consider top quality competition...Wake Forest in 2000...Rutgers, Temple, Miss. State, Stanford, Colorado in 2006 (a horrific year for us), Duke, Northwestern, Indiana...

This game was a huge outlier when compared with all other I-AA triumphs over I-A...

Regarding running up the score in a game...

DIV III is great footbal l!!!

In the Week 1 thread I detailed the Mount Union game of yesterday. I have season tickets there. They are a powerhouse every year, and their coach is a class act all the way. Yesterday the other team, also DIV III, got stomped, 75-7. It could have been MUCH worse, except after the 1st quarter, with a 52-0 lead, Mount used basically everyone on the roster in the game, including 5 quarterbacks. Halftime was 72-0. They played NOT to score all through the 2nd half. Examples...they kicked their only 2nd half score, a FG, when they were first and 5 on the 8 yard line, to keep from scoring another TD. They twice took a knee later to keep from scoring another touchdown. They eliminated all runbacks by calling Fair Catch on every kick. Yeah, it was NOT a fun game to watch, when your team is trying NOT to score. But it demonstrates again that there is CLASS in that program, unlike the Stoops fiasco, and his supporters, like Freshlove1.

In no way, in my mind, can you justify running up a ridiculous score against an obviously unworthy opponent. Where's the sportsmanship in that? BOO to Stoops and Oklahoma for once again proving they have NO class at all.

Here's my take on running up the score.

1 - Even though they claim margin of victory has been taken out of the BCS equation it is still there with the quality wins thing. Voters will remember low points against a lower tier team and count that against a team.

2 - Even when you pull the starters the backups want to score. Let me give you the best example I have from a game at Florida. I think we were playing Kentucky back in the early 90s and we were up big so Spurrier pulled Danny Weurffel and put in Erik Kresser. Well what does the second string want to become...first string of course. So Kresser ends up throwing a couple of TDs and gets pulled himself. Spurrier then puts in Brian Schottenheimer (Marty's kid) and the offense slows down a bit since UK still has their first string in. Well Schottenheimer audibles out of the called play and throws a massive TD pass. As he trots off the field he gets an earful from Spurrier and never came back into the game. The final score was something ridiculous where we scored 70+ points but sometimes you can't just turn it off. The backups don't want to be backups.

DeltaGator,

Your points are right on, and I agree fully with you. Yes, the second team wants to score, and should be allowed to. In the second quarter of the Mount game they scored 20 points, including a runback almost the length of the field of an intercepted pass for a TD. You can BET that player was on cloud nine. Then for the second half they played to NOT score, as I mentioned above.

It really is a dilemma...players want to score, but you want to demonstrate good sportsmanship, too. When one team is so obviously below the other in talent level, or for whatever other reason, NOT running up the score is the thing to do. In the stands, everyone was in agreement that the Mount was doing the right thing, and that it demonstrated how much class the coach there has.

DeltaGator, I always enjoy your posts...even though I'm a Buckeye!!

Oh man I lovedddddddd watching this game. I hate Michigan so very much...my school (Kansas) played App State a year or two ago (can't remember), and we beat them, so...I like to think we're better than Michigan this year  Wink

In the interviews they didn't even want to respect Appalachian State. What a crock.

The thing I don't like is what Lloyd Carr is doing, which is saying they lost because "they made a lot of mistakes, too many penalties", etc. etc....so basically he is saying they lost it, App State didn't win it. I like Lloyd Carr (even though I hate Michigan), but it really bothers me when the losing team says things like that...give App State some credit, they did a hell of a job.

Here's the front page of the newspaper in Boone, NC, where Appalachian State is located:

And they took the goalposts down at their home staditum!! Classic!

Any bets if Lloyd Carr even MAKES IT to the Ohio State game? Big grin

He will, and then be fired right after it.

Quoting Duff44 (Reply 21):
Madison, WI and East Lansing, MI as well Big grin

Might as well add South Bend, IN to that (we have a shot in hell now, right?)

When do the new polls get released? I thought it was usually around lunchtime on Sunday? Do we have to wait until Monday to see the Wolverines dropped completely from the Top 25?  Wink

rotfl  rotfl  rotfl ...good for them...I sure love when the underdog wins, even (sometimes...) when it's against my own team (if it isn't a big game). I got to be part of ripping down the goalposts at Kansas once a couple years ago when we beat Missouri, our archrival, and walked the goalposts up the hill and threw them in our little lake. You know, a lot of people say it gives the school a bad name, or it is a waste of money...but come on, it's a hell of a lot of fun! Like storming a court after a huge basketball game.

Considering that there are still games to be played this week, it may not be until Tuesday before the first polls are released.

If Michigan is still in the Top 25 after this, I'd be very surprised and a bit shocked.

If Michigan is in the Top 25 after that loss the folks that voted them there should have their voting privileges revoked.  Wink
