Luciano Pavarotti Dead at 71

Thu Sep 06, 2007 3:37 am

Bad news  Sad

(AGI) - Rome, Sept.5 - The conditions of tenor Luciano Pavarotti are getting worse.

Apparently, he is at home in "extremely critical conditions, assisted by the support therapy" of the Modena hospital oncologists. The tenor was hospitalised, following a lung infection, on 8 August at the Modena polyclinic, and discharged on 25 August.

Last summer, Pavarotti underwent surgery for a pancreas tumour. Today, Modena mayor Giorgio Pighi paid him a visit.

Oh my... This is very sad to hear.......  Sad
I have heard him for real, both in the Opera House and at an outdoor concert.
He is unforgettable, definitely a one of a kind. I love his old recordings.

So which is it? Serious or critical condition? There's a big difference. There are four conditions and each is based on specific criteria. There's good, fair, serious, and critical.

Well I believe the Italian news agency a bit more, considering that they probably have access to the latest information on his condition, but then again, this could be one of those "lost in translation" terms, considering that their news item was written in poor English.

I can't get into Pavarotti's official website.I hope I'm wrong but this is not a good sign.

To be honest, Luciano Pavarotti has lived a lot for someone with pancreatic cancer. Usually one only survives for about 6 months with such an agressvie cancer. Pavarotti must have certainly benefited from the very best medical cre available to live so long... unfortunately the prognosis is not good and I just hope he doesn't suffer much

With pancreatic tumours you begin at serious and only go downhill from there. Quite unfortunate, but true.

Correct. Seldom you see someone survive the 6-month "deadline". It is a very aggressive, almost untreatable form of cancer. I am pretty sure it will be a matter of days for Pavarotti. Very sad indeed.  Sad

On the BBC news this evening, the expression they used was "Gravely ill." I wouldn't be surprised to hear he died overnight.

Only saw the great man live once (performing in a brilliant version of Verdi's Requiem), but it was an unforgettable experience.  Sad

I've never been a fan of Pavarotti, and I never really liked him for his sometimes pompous character, but I respect his work, and wish him a quick recovery, but I agree with all others: there may not be a happy ending for him. If he has to die, then at least I hope he dies peacefully and without any pain.

This is so sad. I grew up listeing to Pavarotti. I have only seen him live once in the united center! He is the greatest.

Best wishes to him and god bless him i hope he gets better.

Being realistic i wouldnt be surprised if he doesnt make it through the week. Its such a shame to loose someone who has helped shape the lives of so many people around the world.

Absolutely awful.  Many many people will be devastated if he passes..

And to those who do not know who he is, i can only say that you have missed out on much during your life.

I hope he fully recovers, despite the bleak outlook.

As a kid just out of grade school, I remember the first time watching him sing 'Nessun Dorma'. He made my hair stand. To this day, when no one's looking, I sing in my little corner wanting to be him.

You absolutely should. Even though I prefer Domingo's voice to his, Pavarotti's voice is something unique. You know it's him - it could be nobody else. I was lucky enough to be in some of his performances, and his presence is unmatched (and it's not because he's enormously fat, though he certainly is).

He is a true legend, and his passing will be a great loss to the world of classical music. Not just because he was a great singer, but because he was a household name even in the houses that never listened to the genre, and his name alone was enough to create interest in a field that sorely needs it. There is nobody else living that you can say that about.

Luciano Pavarotti is now forever in the sky, singing to the stars.......

E lucevano le stelle.....

He died early this morning at 5.00 AM Modena time.

http://www.corriere.it/Primo_Piano/C...e/06/morto_luciano_pavarotti.shtml

Luciano Pavarotti was a regular on British Airways' Concordes as he sang in New York and Covent Garden, sometimes on both stages during the same season. He was also a user of the AF Concordes.

I heard him in the Opera House (Un Ballo In Maschera, Verdi) and in Paris at Champ de Mars when the 3 tenors gave a performance for the World Cup in 1988 with L'Orchestre de Paris under the direction of James Levine.

He has done a lot to make Opera popular among the common people with the 3 tenors, Pavarotti and Friends, etc.

He will be greatly missed and his work will be forever remembered.

Pavarotti was instrumental in opening up the sound of opera to the masses. An example of this is in his duet with Bono in Miss Sarajevo, which is simply beautiful. RIP Luciano.

I saw him in concert in Faro about 8 years ago. My agency bought about 20 tickets in case any of our clients wanted them, but we were worried we'd be stuck with them. By the time we'd moved about 250, we were less worried!

RIP Luciano.
